Construction is a sector characterized by a high likelihood of accidents, among the factors that have the potential to reduce such accidents, the design stage is important to reduce risks in the life cycle of the enterprise. The need to reduce risks on the construction site early and proactively has fostered the development of digital tools for designs. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the development and application of digital tools capable of identifying security risks in designs and examine them to point out their characteristics and limitations. The review of the literature was based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. The research showed that although the use of digital tools has great potential for impact on risk mitigation in the design stage, they are still little used and have not reached their maximum potential. In addition, this systematic review indicates possibilities of use, which include the automation of risk verification and provision of security measures, as well as limitations, as the absence of consideration of the dynamism of the work in digital tools. Therefore, the present work presents a basis to help structure future applied research in the area.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become a key methodology for transforming the construction sector, yet its integration into higher education remains a global challenge. In Brazil, despite national policies promoting BIM adoption, most universities still face cultural, technological, and pedagogical barriers to curricular implementation. This study aims to assess and characterize the BIM maturity level of the Civil Engineering program at the Polytechnic School of the University of Pernambuco (POLI/UPE), applying the BIM Maturity Matrix for Higher Education Institutions (m2BIM-HEI). Self-assessment questionnaires were administered to program coordination, faculty members, the Structuring Teaching Nucleus, and the Information Technology Division. The results show an intermediate BIM maturity level (56.5%), with notable progress in research and student training but limitations in faculty qualification, technological infrastructure, and institutional vision. The originality of this research lies in its contextualized diagnostic approach, applying a maturity model to a public Brazilian university and revealing specific challenges of BIM adoption in developing contexts. The findings highlight the need for structured institutional policies, faculty development programs, and curricular integration strategies, offering insights that can guide similar initiatives in Latin American higher education.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is recognized as a sustainable approach to the development of architecture and engineering projects, operating at all phases of a building's life cycle. Despite its importance, the adoption of BIM in education has been gradual. The aim of this article is to investigate the adoption of BIM software by civil engineering students at the Polytechnic School of the University of Pernambuco (POLI/UPE) in the architecture course, taught in the 6th semester. The longitudinal study encompassed quantitative data from 2020 to 2023, aiming to classify the delivered projects according to the software used (2D or BIM), identify temporal trends in the use of BIM software, and develop hypotheses to understand the reasons for the software choice. It was observed that the use of 2D software was predominant among students in 2020, with 63.95% usage, but there was a gradual increase in the adoption of BIM software over time, becoming significant in 2023, with 80.85% usage. This study contributes to the understanding of the dynamics related to the integration of BIM in academic training in Civil Engineering, highlighting the role of the university as a promoter of sustainable practices in the construction industry, emphasizing the importance of BIM as a tool for efficiency and quality throughout the building life cycle.
