Background: Virtual reality (VR) serious games, due to their high level of freedom and realism, influence the rehabilitation training of inhibitory control abilities in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although reward feedback has a motivating effect on improving inhibitory control, the effectiveness and differences between various forms of rewards lack empirical research. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of different forms of reward feedback on the inhibitory control abilities of children with attention deficits in a VR serious game environment. Methods: This study focuses on children who meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD tendencies, using a 2 (material rewards: coin reward and token reward) × 2 (psychological rewards: verbal encouragement and badge reward) factorial between-subject design (N=84), with a control group (n=15) for pre- and posttest experiments. The experimental group received VR feedback reinforcement training, while the control group underwent conventional VR training without feedback. The training period lasted 0.5 months, with each intervention session lasting 25 minutes, occurring twice daily with an interval of at least 5 hours for 28 sessions. Before and after training, the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham, Version IV Scale (SNAP-IV) Scale, stop signal task, inhibition conflict task, and Simon task were administered to assess the hyperactivity index and the 3 components of inhibitory control ability. The pretest included the SNAP-IV Scale and 3 task tests to obtain baseline data; the posttest involved repeating the above tests after completing all training. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS (IBM) software. Independent sample t tests were performed on the experimental and control groups’ pre- and posttest task results to determine whether significant differences existed between group means. Paired sample t tests were also conducted on the SNAP-IV Scale’s pre- and posttest results to assess the intervention effect’s significance. Results: Reward feedback was more effective than no reward feedback in improving behaviors related to attention deficits in children. Material rewards showed significant effects in the Stop-Signal Task (F1=13.04, P=.001), Inhibition Conflict Task (F1=7.34, P=.008), and SNAP-IV test (F1=69.23, P<.001); mental rewards showed significant effects in the Stop-Signal Task (F1=38.54, P<.001) and SNAP-IV test (F1=70.78, P<.001); the interaction between the 2 showed significant effects in the Stop-Signal Task (F1=4.47, P=.04) and SNAP-IV test (F1=23.85, P<.001). Conclusions: Combining material and psychological rewards within a VR platform can effectively improve attention-deficit behaviors in children with ADHD, enhancing their inhibitory control abilities. Among these, coin rewards are more effective than token rewards, and verbal encouragement outperforms badge rewards. The combined feedback of coin rewards and verbal encouragement yields the most significant improvement in inhibitory control abilities.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether different expressions of landmarks and paths have different influences on the navigational efficiency and the cognitive load of indoor maps. The study tested 80 subjects by indoor path discovery experiments and measured their cognitive loads with the Cooper–Harper scale. According to the results, we extracted some key landmarks from all landmarks of the experimental indoor map and evaluated the saliency degree of each path. Then, the study tested subjects with four different types of experimental indoor maps by path-recognition tasks. The results showed that maps with key landmarks are more effective in terms of navigation than those with full landmarks, but there were no significant differences between their cognitive loads. Maps with highlighted paths are more effective in terms of navigation, and their cognitive loads are much lower than those without highlighted paths. In addition, this study found that women's cognitive loads were more affected by key landmarks compared with men’s, while highlighted paths had no significant differences in terms of navigational efficiency and the cognitive load between males and females. Implications of these results with respect to the optimization strategies of indoor map designs are discussed.

Tag weight differences in tag maps are usually reflected by different font sizes. With this strategy, low weighted tags may be ignored and tag sizes may be misjudged due to differing word length, character height and word width. To address these shortcomings, this paper improves the layout method of tag maps by presetting anchor points. We construct weight contours based on corner points and center points of tag outer envelope rectangles and adopt hypsometric tinting as background color to reflect tag weight differences. Finally, we compare and analyze the background color strategy with the font size strategy from the perspectives of tag selection, tag recognition, tag recall, confidence, readability, and preference through eye movement experiments and questionnaire surveys. The results show that both strategies exhibit advantages (when tags are devoid of semantics), with the font size strategy being favored slightly in this abstract case. We provide tag map designers with a new visualization scheme for the expression of tag weight.

How can the interactive mode of a map be optimized to facilitate efficient positioning and improve cognitive efficiency? This paper addresses this crucial aspect of map design. It explores the impact of spatial reference frames, map dimensionality, and navigation modes on spatial orientation efficiency, as well as their interactions, through empirical eye-movement experiments. The results demonstrate the following: (1) When using a 2D fixed map in an allocentric reference frame, participants exhibit a high correct rate, a low cognitive load, and a short reaction time. In contrast, when operating within an egocentric reference frame using a 2D rotating map, participants demonstrate a higher correct rate, a reduced cognitive load, and a quicker reaction time. (2) The simplicity of 2D maps, despite their reduced authenticity compared to 3D maps, diminishes users’ cognitive load and enhances positioning efficiency. (3) The fixed map aligns more closely with the cognitive habits of participants in the allocentric reference frame, while the rotating map corresponds better to the cognitive habits of participants in the egocentric reference frame, thereby improving their cognitive efficiency. This study offers insights that can inform the optimization design of spatial orientation efficiency.

Mobile map landmark symbols are pivotal in conveying spatial semantics and enhancing users’ perception of digital maps. This study employs a three-factor hybrid experimental design to investigate the effects of different landmark symbol types and their color associations with annotations on search performance using eye tracking methods. Utilizing the Tobii X2-60 eye tracker, 40 participants engaged in a visual search task across three symbol types (icons, indexes, and symbols) and two color conditions (consistent and inconsistent). This study also examines the impact of gender on search performance. The results indicate that INDEX, emphasizing the landmarks’ functions and key features, most effectively improve search accuracy and efficiency while demanding the least cognitive effort. In contrast, SYMBOL type characters, with clear semantics and minimal information, require less visual attention, facilitating faster preliminary processing. Additionally, cognitive style differences between genders affect these symbols’ effectiveness in visual searches. A careful selection of symbol types and color combinations can significantly enhance user interaction with mobile maps.

Objectives: To address the challenges of subjectivity, misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this study proposes an objective auxiliary diagnostic method based on P300 signals. Existing studies largely rely on conventional P300 features, lacking the systematic integration of event-related potential (ERP) priors and facing limitations in spatiotemporal feature modeling. Methods: Using common spatiotemporal pattern (CSTP) analysis and quantitative evaluation, we revealed significant spatiotemporal differences in P300 signals between PTSD patients and healthy controls. ERP prior information was then extracted and integrated into a hybrid architecture combining transformer encoders and a convolutional neural network (CNN), enabling joint modeling of long-range temporal dependencies and local spatial patterns. Results: The proposed P300 spatiotemporal transformer-CNN (P300-STTCNet) achieved a classification accuracy of 93.37% in distinguishing PTSD from healthy controls, markedly outperforming traditional approaches. Conclusions: Significant spatiotemporal differences in P300 signals exist between PTSD and healthy control groups. The P300-STTCNet model effectively captures PTSD-related spatiotemporal features, demonstrating strong potential for electroencephalogram-based objective auxiliary diagnosis.
