This study presents a prospective study for the potential exploitation of pelagic Sargassum spp. as a solid biofuel energy source. It was carried out in three stages. First we conducted a morphological, physical-chemical, and structural characterization using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (DRX), respectively. Second we evaluated the material’s functional properties as a solid biofuel based on its calorific value and the quantification of polymeric components like hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin, as well as thermogravimetric and differential analysis to study the kinetics of its pyrolysis and determine parameters like activation energy (Ea), reaction order (n), and the pre-exponential factor (Z). Third we analyzed the energetic potential considering the estimated volume of pelagic Sargassum spp. that was removed from beaches along the Mexican Caribbean coast in recent years. Results of the kinetic study indicate that Sargassum spp. has an enormous potential for use as a complement to other bioenergy sources. Other results show the high potential for exploiting these algae as an energy source due to the huge volumes that have inundated Caribbean, West African, and northern Brazil shorelines in recent years. As a solid biofuel, Sargassum spp. has a potential energy the order of 0.203 gigajoules (GJ)/m3. In the energy matrix of the residential sector in Mexico, its potential use as an energy source is comparable to the national consumption of firewood. The volume of beachcast Sargassum spp. that was removed from ~8 km of coastline around Puerto Morelos, Mexico in 2018–2019, could have generated over 40 terajoules/year of solid biofuel.

For the first time, a study has been carried out on the pyrolysis of wood residues from Pinus pseudostrobus, Pinus leiophylla and Pinus montezumae, from an area in Western México using TGA analysis to determine the main kinetic parameters (Ea and Z) at different heating rates in a N2 atmosphere. The samples were heated from 25 °C to 800 °C with six different heating rates 5–30 °C min−1. The Ea, was calculated using different widely known mathematical models such as Friedman, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose. The Ea value of 126.58, 123.22 and 112.72 kJ/mol (P. pseudostrobus), 146.15, 143.24 and 132.76 kJ/mol (P. leiophylla) and 148.12, 151.8 and 141.25 kJ/mol (P. montezumae) respectively, was found for each method. A variation in Ea with respect to conversion was observed with the three models used, revealing that pyrolysis of pines progresses through more complex, multi-stage kinetics. FT-IR spectroscopy was conducted to determine the functional groups present in the three species of conifers. This research will allow future decisions to be made, and possibly, to carry out this process in a biomass reactor and therefore the production of H2 for the generation of energy through a fuel cell.

Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising technology in the field of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), specifically in the implementation of diagnosis and treatment strategies. Nanotechnology-based approaches, such as nanoparticle-based contrast agents and nanoscale imaging techniques, have shown great potential for enhancing the sensitivity and specificity of HCC detection. These approaches provide high-resolution imaging and allow for the detection of molecular markers and alterations in cellular morphology associated with HCC. In terms of treatment, nanotechnology has revolutionized HCC therapy by enabling targeted drug delivery, enhancing therapeutic efficacy, and minimizing off-target effects. Nanoparticle-based drug carriers can be functionalized with ligands specific to HCC cells, allowing for selective accumulation of therapeutic agents at the tumor site. Furthermore, nanotechnology can facilitate combination therapy by co-encapsulating multiple drugs within a single nanoparticle, allowing for synergistic effects and overcoming drug resistance. This review aims to provide an overview of recent advances in nanotechnology-based approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of HCC. Further research is needed to optimize the design and functionality of nanoparticles, improve their biocompatibility and stability, and evaluate their long-term safety and efficacy. Nonetheless, the integration of nanotechnology in HCC management holds great promise and may lead to improved patient outcomes in the future.

Plants of the Annona genus have garnered increasing scientific interest due to their rich phytochemical profile and broad spectrum of biological activities, which include antimicrobial, antiproliferative, and cytotoxic effects. Among the most studied compounds are acetogenins and Annonacins, which exhibit potent bioactivity and have been identified as key agents in the green synthesis and stabilization of nanomaterials. In recent years, the integration of Annona plant extracts—particularly from leaves—into nanotechnology platforms has opened new avenues in the development of eco-friendly and biocompatible nanostructures for biomedical applications. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge regarding the antimicrobial properties of nanomaterials synthesized using extracts from Annona species. This review encompasses 74 indexed articles published between 2012 and 2023, focusing on the synthesis of nanomaterials using extracts from this genus that exhibit antimicrobial and biomedical properties. The search was conducted in databases such as Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus. Emphasis is placed on their antibacterial, antifungal, and anthelmintic effects, as well as additional therapeutic potentials, such as antidiabetic, antihypertensive, antiproliferative, and cytotoxic activities. The analysis of the recent literature highlights how Annona-derived phytochemicals contribute significantly to the functionalization and enhanced biological performance of these nanomaterials. This work aims to support future research focused on the rational design of Annona-based nanostructures as promising candidates in antimicrobial and therapeutic strategies.

A solid-phase extraction (SPE) process, followed by an HPLC-DAD method, was developed and validated to quantify short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and applied to analyze chicken feces samples. This study aimed to report the use of the STRATATM-X-A 96 Well Plate SPE cartridge method as the first step in quantifying SCFAs. A stationary reverse-phase Luna Omega C18 column kept at 40 °C was used, with a gradient elution mobile phase (H2SO4 and Acetonitrile, 98:2), a flow rate of 1.2 mL/min, and detection at 210 nm. A mixture of acetic, propionic, and butyric acid was used as thestandard. The method showed a linear relationship, with a coefficient of determination of R2 = 0.9987, R2 = 0.9985, and R2 = 0.9966 for acetic, propionic, and butyric acid, respectively. Concerning sensitivity, an LOD and LOQ of 0.14, 0.14, 0.14 mg/mL and 0.44, 0.45, 0.43 mg/mL were obtained for acetic, propionic, and butyric acid, respectively. According to the sample analysis, the accuracy was 76.05, 95.60, and 81.56% for acetic, propionic, and butyric acid, respectively. The developed method is simple, fast, linear, sensitive, accurate, precise, and robust for the quantification of SCFAs. This could serve as an alternative to conventional methodologies for the determination of these critical components in the intestinal health of chicken feces.

The modifications of the electronic properties on carbon-doped boron nitride nanoribbons (BNNRs) as a response to the adsorption of different nitro species were investigated in the framework of the density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation. Calculations were performed using the SIESTA code. We found that the main response involved tuning the original magnetic behavior to a non-magnetic system when the molecule was chemisorbed on the carbon-doped BNNR. It was also revealed that some species could be dissociated through the adsorption process. Furthermore, the nitro species preferred to interact over nanosurfaces where dopants substituted the B sublattice of the carbon-doped BNNRs. Most importantly, the switch on the magnetic behavior offers the opportunity to apply these systems to fit novel technological applications.
