Due to the current concerns against opportunistic pathogens and the challenge of antimicrobial resistance worldwide, alternatives to control pathogen growth are required. In this sense, this work offers a new nanohybrid composed of zinc-layered hydroxide salt (Simonkolleite) and thymol for preventing bacterial growth. Materials were characterized with XRD diffraction, FTIR and UV–Vis spectra, SEM microscopy, and dynamic light scattering. It was confirmed that the Simonkolleite structure was obtained, and thymol was adsorbed on the hydroxide in a web-like manner, with a concentration of 0.863 mg thymol/mg of ZnLHS. Absorption kinetics was described with non-linear models, and a pseudo-second-order equation was the best fit. The antibacterial test was conducted against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Staphylococcus aureus strains, producing inhibition halos of 21 and 24 mm, respectively, with a 10 mg/mL solution of thymol–ZnLHS. Moreover, biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa inhibition was tested, with over 90% inhibition. Nanohybrids exhibited antioxidant activity with ABTS and DPPH evaluations, confirming the presence of the biomolecule in the inorganic matrix. These results can be used to develop a thymol protection vehicle for applications in food, pharmaceutics, odontology, or biomedical industries.

YMnO3 is a P-type semiconductor with a perovskite-type structure (ABO3). It presents two crystalline systems: rhombohedral and hexagonal, the latter being the most stable and studied. In the hexagonal system, Mn3+ ions are coordinated by five oxygen ions forming a trigonal bipyramid, and the Y3+ ions are coordinated by five oxygen ions. This arrangement favors its ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties, which have been widely studied since 1963. However, applications based on their optical properties have yet to be explored. This work evaluates the photoelectric response and the photocatalytic activity of yttrium manganite in visible spectrum wavelengths. To conduct this, a rod-obelisk-shaped yttrium manganite with a reduced indirect bandgap value of 1.43 eV in its hexagonal phase was synthesized through the precipitation method. The synthesized yttrium manganite was elucidated by solid-state techniques, such as DRX, XPS, and UV-vis. It was non-toxic as shown by the 100% leukocyte viability of mice BALB/c.

A solid-phase extraction (SPE) process, followed by an HPLC-DAD method, was developed and validated to quantify short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and applied to analyze chicken feces samples. This study aimed to report the use of the STRATATM-X-A 96 Well Plate SPE cartridge method as the first step in quantifying SCFAs. A stationary reverse-phase Luna Omega C18 column kept at 40 °C was used, with a gradient elution mobile phase (H2SO4 and Acetonitrile, 98:2), a flow rate of 1.2 mL/min, and detection at 210 nm. A mixture of acetic, propionic, and butyric acid was used as thestandard. The method showed a linear relationship, with a coefficient of determination of R2 = 0.9987, R2 = 0.9985, and R2 = 0.9966 for acetic, propionic, and butyric acid, respectively. Concerning sensitivity, an LOD and LOQ of 0.14, 0.14, 0.14 mg/mL and 0.44, 0.45, 0.43 mg/mL were obtained for acetic, propionic, and butyric acid, respectively. According to the sample analysis, the accuracy was 76.05, 95.60, and 81.56% for acetic, propionic, and butyric acid, respectively. The developed method is simple, fast, linear, sensitive, accurate, precise, and robust for the quantification of SCFAs. This could serve as an alternative to conventional methodologies for the determination of these critical components in the intestinal health of chicken feces.

The development of oxidation-resistant and regenerable materials remains a major challenge for mercury removal from contaminated waters and industrial effluents. In this study, a zwitterionic mesoporous silica gel functionalized with L-cysteine (SG-3PS-Cys) was synthesized, where the thiol group is covalently anchored to the silica framework, preventing oxidative degradation while preserving –NH3+ and –COO− groups for Hg(II) coordination. Spectroscopic analyses (FTIR, XPS, and 13C NMR) confirmed the formation of a stable, thiol-free binding environment in which mercury interacts through carboxylate oxygen atoms, electrostatically stabilized by neighboring ammonium groups. The material exhibited a high surface area (134 m2 g−1) and uniform mesoporosity (9.8 nm), achieving a maximum Hg(II) uptake of 82.7 mg g−1 at pH 3 with rapid kinetics and cooperative S-type isotherms. The adsorbent retained 72% of its capacity after five regeneration cycles and maintained 38.7% selectivity toward Hg(II) in multicomponent solutions. DFT-based surface energy distribution analysis supported the zwitterionic coordination mechanism, revealing energetically homogeneous and high-affinity binding domains. Beyond its chemical stability, the material introduces a sustainable route for mercury remediation, linking surface energy, electrostatic effects, and porosity to achieve durable performance under acidic and complex aqueous conditions. These findings provide a mechanistic and design framework for the next generation of non-thiol adsorbents capable of selective and reusable Hg(II) removal in environmentally relevant scenarios.
