Nutrient resorption from senesced leaves as a nutrient conservation strategy is important for plants to adapt to nutrient deficiency, particularly in alpine and arid environment. However, the leaf nutrient resorption patterns of different functional plants across environmental gradient remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a transect survey of 12 communities to address foliar nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) resorption strategies of four functional groups along an eastward increasing precipitation gradient in northern Tibetan Changtang Plateau. Soil nutrient availability, leaf nutrient concentration, and N:P ratio in green leaves ([N:P]g) were linearly correlated with precipitation. Nitrogen resorption efficiency decreased, whereas phosphorus resorption efficiency except for sedge increased with increasing precipitation, indicating a greater nutrient conservation in nutrient‐poor environment. The surveyed alpine plants except for legume had obviously higher N and P resorption efficiencies than the world mean levels. Legumes had higher N concentrations in green and senesced leaves, but lowest resorption efficiency than nonlegumes. Sedge species had much lower P concentration in senesced leaves but highest P resorption efficiency, suggesting highly competitive P conservation. Leaf nutrient resorption efficiencies of N and P were largely controlled by soil and plant nutrient, and indirectly regulated by precipitation. Nutrient resorption efficiencies were more determined by soil nutrient availability, while resorption proficiencies were more controlled by leaf nutrient and N:P of green leaves. Overall, our results suggest strong internal nutrient cycling through foliar nutrient resorption in the alpine nutrient‐poor ecosystems on the Plateau. The patterns of soil nutrient availability and resorption also imply a transit from more N limitation in the west to a more P limitation in the east Changtang. Our findings offer insights into understanding nutrient conservation strategy in the precipitation and its derived soil nutrient availability gradient.

Investigating the coupling coordination relationship between water resources, ecology and the economy is the basis process for watershed governing to achieve sustainable development. Taking the Wuding River watershed (one of the largest tributaries of the Yellow River) as an example, we used the coupling coordination model to analyze the coupling coordination relationship of the water–ecology–economy system between 2001 and 2020, and then used grey correlation and partial correlation analyses to explore the main influencing factors and cross-county characteristic of the coupling coordination. The results show that the water, ecology and economy subsystems changed slightly before 2007. After 2007, the economy developed rapidly, while the water and ecology increased for a short time and then decreased after 2013. The water–ecology–economy coupling coordination was on the verge of dysfunctional decline. Water and ecology were the main influencing factors on the coupling coordination. The coupling coordination showed a cross-county characteristic. Water and ecology in upstream counties had significant positive correlations with the coupling coordination in downstream counties. The economy subsystem in upstream counties, however, had significant negative correlations with water and ecology in downstream counties. Our findings provide an empirical mode to measure transregional characteristics of coupling coordination and could support the construction of a coordination governance mode in the Wuding River watershed.

Nitrogen (N) is one of the most important factors limiting plant productivity, and N fixation by legume species is an important source of N input into ecosystems. Meanwhile, N resorption from senescent plant tissues conserves nutrients taken up in the current season, which may alleviate ecosystem N limitation. N fixation was assessed by the 15N dilution technique in four types of alpine grasslands along the precipitation and soil nutrient gradients. The N resorption efficiency (NRE) was also measured in these alpine grasslands. The aboveground biomass in the alpine meadow was 4–6 times higher than in the alpine meadow steppe, alpine steppe, and alpine desert steppe. However, the proportion of legume species to community biomass in the alpine steppe and the alpine desert steppe was significantly higher than the proportion in the alpine meadow. N fixation by the legume plants in the alpine meadow was 0.236 g N/m2, which was significantly higher than N fixation in other alpine grasslands (0.041 to 0.089 g N/m2). The NRE in the alpine meadows was lower than in the other three alpine grasslands. Both the aboveground biomass and N fixation of the legume plants showed decreasing trends with the decline of precipitation and soil N gradients from east to west, while the NRE of alpine plants showed increasing trends along the gradients, which indicates that alpine plants enhance the NRE to adapt to the increasing droughts and nutrient‐poor environments. The opposite trends of N fixation and NRE along the precipitation and soil nutrient gradients indicate that alpine plants adapt to precipitation and soil nutrient limitation by promoting NRE (conservative nutrient use by alpine plants) rather than biological N fixation (open sources by legume plants) on the north Tibetan Plateau.

Aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) and rain-use efficiency (RUE) are important indicators in assessing the response of ecosystems to climate change. In this paper, the Changtang Plateau in the Tibetan Autonomous Region was selected as the study area to analyze the spatial and temporal changes of ANPP and RUE in grassland communities and their response to climate change. The results showed the following:(1) The spatial pattern of ANPP was closely related to rainfall on the Changtang Plateau. The average ANPP over the past 15 years increased gradually from the arid west to the humid east. A consistent pattern was exhibited in different grassland types and climate zones. (2) The RUE was higher at the east and west edges of the Changtang Plateau, especially in the arid west, but was lower in the center. From the perspective of different climatic zones, the average RUE in the southern Tibetan semiarid climate zone and the Ngari arid climate zone was significantly higher than that in other climate zones. However, the average RUE in different grassland types only varied from 0.07 to 0.09 g·m−2·mm−1. The spatial variation in RUE was more distinct in different climatic zones than in different grassland types. (3) Climate change influenced the interannual variation of ANPP and RUE, but the response of ANPP to rainfall showed a significant lag. The interannual change in RUE was negatively correlated with changes in precipitation. (4) In general, a greater area showed a significant increase rather than a decrease in ANPP on the Changtang Plateau, which meant that the grassland condition is improving. The temporal variation patterns of ANPP and RUE in different climate zones were consistent with the overall patterns on the Changtang Plateau, while the variation was not significant in different grassland types.

The national botanic garden is not only a primary means of global ex situ conservation but also a key indicator of biodiversity conservation capacity in a country. To understand the contributions of national botanic gardens from around the world to plant diversity conservation, we generated a long time-series dataset to investigate the spatiotemporal development of national botanic gardens and then explored their functional expansion from 1593 to 2023. The results showed that the development of national botanic gardens was driven by the development demands of human society and could be divided into three stages, i.e., the initial exploration stage of early botanic gardens (1593–1765), the colonial development stage of modern botanic gardens (1765–1945), and the rapid development stage of modern botanic gardens (1945–2023). The first national botanic garden was established in Western Europe, followed by other national botanic gardens being established in the rest of the world. The functions of national botanic gardens evolved from the collection of medicinal and plant resources to multiple purposes, including scientific research, plant diversity conservation, education, and dissemination of knowledge. Contemporary national botanical gardens have played a crucial role in plant diversity conservation and scientific research on the response and adaptation of plant diversity to global change. Future development and management of national botanic gardens will play a crucial role in achieving future targets of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, which meets the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Forest disturbances and restoration are key processes in carbon transmission between the terrestrial surface and the atmosphere. In boreal forests, fire is the most common and main disturbance. The reconstruction process for post-disaster vegetation plays an essential role in the restoration of a forest’s structure and function, and it also maintains the ecosystem’s health and stability. Remote sensing monitoring could reflect dynamic post-fire features of vegetation. However, there are still major differences in the remote sensing index in terms of regional feasibility and sensibility. In this study, the largest boreal primary coniferous forest area in China, the Greater Hinggan Mountains forest area, was chosen as the sampling area. Based on time series data from Landsat-5 TM surface reflectance (SR) and data obtained from sample plots, the burned area was extracted using the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR). We used the pre- and post-fire difference values (dNBR) and compared them with survey data to classify the burn severity level. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) (based on spectrum combination) and the Disturbance Index (DI) (based on Tasseled-Cap transformation) were chosen to analyze the difference in the degree of burn severity and vegetation restoration observed using various methods according to the sequential variation feature from 1986 to 2011. The results are as follows: (1) The two remote sensing indexes are both sensitive to fire and the burn severity level. When a fire occurred, the NDVI value for that year decreased dramatically while the DI value increased sharply. Alongside these findings, we observed that the rangeability and restoration period of the two indexes is significantly positively correlated with the degree of burn severity. (2) According to these two indexes, natural vegetation restoration was faster than the restoration achieved using artificial methods. However, compared with the NDVI, the DI showed a clearer improvement in restoration, as the restoration period the DI could evaluate was longer in two different ways: the NDVI illustrated great changes in the burn severity in the 5 years post-fire, while the DI was able to show the changes for more than 20 years. Additionally, from the DI, one could identify felling activities carried out when the artificial restoration methods were initially applied. (3) From the sample-plot data, there were few differences in forest canopy density—the average was between 0.55 and 0.6—between the diverse severity levels and restoration methods after 33 years of recovery. The average diameter at breast height (DBH) and height values of trees in naturally restored areas decreased with the increase in burn severity, but the values were obviously higher than those in artificially restored areas. This indicates that both the burn severity level and restoration methods have important effects on forest restoration, but the results may also have been affected by other factors.
