Prof. Silvana Belo holds a Pharmacy degree from the
University of Coimbra (1978), an MSc in Medical Parasitology from the Instituto
de Higiene e Medicina Tropical/Universidade Nova de Lisboa (IHMT/UNL, 1990),
and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the same institution (IHMT/UNL, 2000).
She has also completed post-graduate studies in Clinical Pathology at the
Hospital de Egas Moniz in Lisbon and in Tropical Medicine & Public Health
at the IHMT/UNL. As an Associate Professor in Medical Helminthology/Parasitology
at the IHMT, UNL, Portugal, she is a member of the Global Health & Tropical
Medicine Centre. Since 2010, she has been the Head of the Laboratory of
Immunodiagnostics of Helminthology and coordinator of the Medical Helminthology
and Malacology Group. Her primary research interests are Immunoepidemiology,
Diagnosis, Therapeutic Compounds, and Control Approaches, with a focus on
Schistosomiasis, Filariasis, and Zoonotic Helminthiasis. She conducts field and
laboratory studies in these areas. She has supervised numerous MSc and PhD
students and has numerous publications in the field of helminthiasis. She is
involved in scientific projects funded by national and international agencies,
serving as Principal Investigator, Co-PI, and team member.
