The reliability of gearboxes is extremely important for the normal operation of mechanical equipment. This paper proposes an optimized long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network fault diagnosis method. Additionally, a feature extraction method is employed, utilizing variational mode decomposition (VMD) and permutation entropy (PE). Firstly, the gear vibration signal is subjected to feature decomposition using VMD. Secondly, PE is calculated as a feature quantity output. Next, it is input into the improved LSTM fault diagnosis model, and the LSTM parameters are iteratively optimized using the chameleon search algorithm (CSA). Finally, the output of the fault diagnosis results is obtained. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the method exceeds 97.8%.

As a critical component of the engine, the failure of aviation fuel pumps can lead to serious safety accidents, necessitating the development of effective maintenance programs. Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) has a clear structure and strong interpretability in maintenance decision making. However, it heavily relies on expert knowledge, which is subject to uncertainty and incoherence. Therefore, this paper proposes the NOA (Nutcracker Optimization Algorithm)–GNN (Graph Neural Network) model to enhance the accuracy and robustness of FTA by mitigating the uncertainty and inconsistency in expert knowledge. The NOA algorithm efficiently searches the solution space to identify globally optimal solutions. An FTA-TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) maintenance decision-making framework has also been developed. By integrating FTA with TOPSIS, the proposed method provides a comprehensive and systematic approach that combines qualitative and quantitative analyses, thereby improving the effectiveness and reliability of maintenance decision making.

The prediction of the health status of critical components is an important influence in making accurate maintenance decisions for rotating equipment. Since vibration signals contain a large amount of fault information, they can more accurately describe the health status of critical components. Therefore, it is widely used in the field of rotating equipment health state prediction. However, there are two major problems in predicting the health status of key components based on vibration signals: (1) The working environment of rotating equipment is harsh, and if only one feature in the time or frequency domain is selected for fault analysis, it will be susceptible to harsh operating environments and cannot completely reflect the fault information. (2) The vibration signals are unlabeled time series data, which are difficult to accurately convert into the health status of key components. In order to solve the above problems, this paper proposes a combined prediction model combining a bidirectional long- and short-term memory network (BiLSTM), a self-organizing neural network (SOM) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Firstly, the SOM is utilized to fuse the fault characteristics of multiple vibration signals of key components to obtain an indicator (HI) that can reflect the health status of rotating equipment and to also compensate for the vulnerability of single signal characteristics in the time or frequency domain to environmental influences. Secondly, the K-means clustering method is employed to cluster the health indicators and determine the health state, which solves the problem of determining the health of a component from unsupervised vibration signal data which is quite difficult. Finally, the particle swarm optimized BiLSTM model is used to predict the health state of key components and the bearing dataset from the IEEE PHM 2012 Data Challenge verifies the method’s effectiveness and validity.

The aircraft fuel pump is a critical component of the aviation fuel supply system, and its fault diagnosis is essential in ensuring flight safety. However, in practical operating conditions, fault samples are scarce and data distributions are highly imbalanced, which severely limits the ability of traditional models to identify minority-class faults. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis method for aircraft fuel pumps based on adaptive synthetic data augmentation using a Conditional Variational Autoencoder (CVAE). The CVAE generates semantically consistent and feature-diverse minority-class samples under class-conditional constraints, thereby enhancing the overall representational capacity of the dataset. Simultaneously, the Adaptive Synthetic (ADASYN) approach adaptively augments hard-to-classify samples near decision boundaries, enabling fine-grained control over sample distribution. The integration of these two techniques establishes a “broad coverage + focused refinement” augmentation strategy, effectively mitigating the class imbalance problem. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly improves the recognition performance of minority-class faults on real-world aircraft fuel pump fault datasets.

The gas path system is an important part of an aero-engine, whose health states can affect the security of the airplane. During the process of aircraft operation, the gas path system will have different working conditions over time, owing to the change of control parameters. However, the different working conditions which change the symmetry of the system will affect parameters of the health state prediction model for the gas path system. The symmetry of the system will also change. Therefore, it is important to consider the influence of variable working conditions when predicting the health states of gas path system. The accuracy of the health state prediction results of the gas path system will be low if the same evaluation standard is used for different working conditions. In addition, the monitoring data of the gas path system’s health state feature quantity is huge while the fault data which can reflect the health states of the gas path system are poor. Thus, it is difficult to establish a health state prediction model only by using the monitoring data of the gas path system. In order to avoid problems, this paper proposes a health state prediction model considering multiple working conditions based on time domain analysis and a belief rule base. First, working condition is divided by using time domain characteristics. Then, a belief rule base (BRB) theory-based health state prediction model is built, which can fuse expert knowledge and fault monitoring data to improve modeling accuracy. The reference value of the feature is given by the fuzzy C-means algorithm in a model. To decrease the uncertainty of expert knowledge, the covariance matrix adaptive evolution strategy (CMA-ES) is used as the optimization algorithm. Finally, a NASA public dataset without labels is used to verify the proposed health state model. The results show that the proposed health prediction model of a gas path system can accurately realize health state prediction under multiple working conditions.

To address the periodic impacts and amplitude-modulated high-frequency resonance phenomena caused by bearing faults in rotating machinery, this paper proposes a detection method. The core innovation lies in: firstly, constructing a composite fault feature index (CFFI) that integrates normalized kurtosis and fuzzy entropy, which synchronously quantifies the fault impact intensity and periodic structure, and serves as an optimization objective; secondly, definining a spectral energy retention rate (SERR) that includes both the full spectrum and characteristic frequency bands to evaluate the denoising effect and fault feature retention, respectively. Based on this, the method adaptively determines the Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) parameters through the Triangular Topology Aggregation Optimizer (TTAO), and uses Dynamic Weighted Center Clustering (DWCC) to screen key IMFs containing fault-envelope information. On the IMS bearing dataset, the SERR of the reconstructed signal is 0.21356, which is higher than the actual collected signal value of 0.22465, with a relative error of 4.9%, indicating a higher reconstruction accuracy. These quantitative results indicate that CFFI-guided optimization enhances impulsive and periodic fault components while maintaining stable feature-band retention. This approach is suitable for real-world equipment monitoring and exhibits strong engineering applicability.
