Motivated by the importance of studying the relationship between habits of students and their academic performance, daily activities of undergraduate participants have been tracked with smartwatches and smartphones. Smartwatches collect data together with an Android application that interacts with the users who provide the labeling of their own activities. The tracked activities include eating, running, sleeping, classroom-session, exam, job, homework, transportation, watching TV-Series, and reading. The collected data were stored in a server for activity recognition with supervised machine learning algorithms. The methodology for the concept proof includes the extraction of features with the discrete wavelet transform from gyroscope and accelerometer signals to improve the classification accuracy. The results of activity recognition with Random Forest were satisfactory (86.9%) and support the relationship between smartwatch sensor signals and daily-living activities of students which opens the possibility for developing future experiments with automatic activity-labeling, and so forth to facilitate activity pattern recognition to propose a recommendation system to enhance the academic performance of each student.
In recent years, machine learning (ML) algorithms have emerged as powerful tools for predicting and modeling complex data. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the prediction ability of different ML algorithms and a traditional empirical model to estimate the parameters of lactation curves. A total of 1186 monthly records from 156 sheep lactations were used. The model development process involved training and testing models using ML algorithms. In addition to these algorithms, lactation curves were also fitted using the Wood model. The goodness of fit was assessed using correlation coefficient (r), mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), relative absolute error (RAE), and relative root mean square error (RRSE). SMOreg was the algorithm with the best estimates of the characteristics of the sheep lactation curve, with higher values of r compared to the Wood model (0.96 vs. 0.68) for the total milk yield. The results of the current study showed that ML algorithms are able to adequately predict the characteristics of the lactation curve, using a relatively small number of input data. Some ML algorithms provide an interpretable architecture, which is useful for decision-making at the farm level to maximize the use of available information.

Gait analysis is one of the most important challenging research areas in clinical and computing settings. Gait biomechanics and gait human recognition are two major areas of interest. Alterations in walking can cause physical and metal health problems in people, so diagnoses and treatments derived from optimal gait analysis are very useful in clinical settings. This paper surveys the gait analysis methods, applications and platforms, gait biomechanics, as well as, gait recognition approaches, and datasets. Then, we describe contributions in gait forward kinematics, useful to assess gaits such as crouched and normal. Also, a framework for antalgic gait recognition based on human activity, using the gyroscope embedded in a smartphone is described. Different algorithms and metrics were used to perform the gait recognition, highlighting Support Vector Machines, Naive Bayes, k- Nearest Neighbours, and Accuracy and F-measure, respectively. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future perspectives on gait recognition.
In this paper, an e-Learning toolbox based on a set of fuzzy logic data mining techniques is presented. The toolbox is mainly based on the fuzzy inductive reasoning (FIR) methodology and two of its key extensions: (i) the linguistic rules extraction algorithm (LR-FIR), which extracts comprehensible and consistent sets of rules describing students’ learning behavior, and (ii) the causal relevance approach (CR-FIR), which allows to reduce uncertainty during a student’s performance prediction stage, and provides a relative weighting of the features involved in the evaluation process. In addition, the presented toolbox enables, in an incremental way, detecting and grouping students with respect to their learning behavior, with the main goal to timely detect failing students, and properly provide them with suitable and actionable feedback. The proposed toolbox has been applied to two different datasets gathered from two courses at the Latin American Institute for Educational Communication virtual campus. The introductory and didactic planning courses were analyzed using the proposed toolbox. The results obtained by the functionalities offered by the platform allow teachers to make decisions and carry out improvement actions in the current course, i.e., to monitor specific student clusters, to analyze possible changes in the different evaluable activities, or to reduce (to some extent) teacher workload.
Written communication is pivotal for societies to develop. However, lexicon and depth of information vary greatly among texts according to their purpose. Scientific texts, diffusion of science reports, general and area-specific news are all written differently. Thus, we explore the characterization of different text categories through a nature-inspired feature known as the Hurst parameter. We contend that the Hurst exponent is useful to unveil the rhetorical structure within written documents. We collected and processed texts in five categories: scientific articles, diffusion of science reports, business news, entertainment news, and random texts. Each category contains 350 documents. We found that the median for scientific texts has the highest value of the Hurst parameter (0.575), followed by business news (0.54); the median for randomly-generated texts is 0.48, which lies in the region associated with random walks. The median value for diffusion texts is 0.49, and for entertainment texts is 0.53. However, these two categories present high dispersion. We conclude that the Hurst parameter is a measure that quantifies the structure of communication in the selected categories of texts. Application of our finding in the field of e-research is discussed.
