Providing support for deep soft rock roadways under dynamic pressure is a major technical challenge. In this study, the distribution characteristics of surrounding rock-bearing structure of such roadways were systematically examined using theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. Based on the control effect of different support methods on the surrounding rock-bearing structure; a reinforcement scheme for deep dynamic soft rock roadway was proposed and applied. The results indicate that: (1) by increasing the supporting strength of the internal bearing structure, cohesion, and internal friction angle of the surrounding rock, and by reducing the influence of mining, making the external bearing structure close to the roadway and reducing the thickness of the bearing structure, can improve the bearing capacity of the shallow surrounding rock in the roadway; (2) under the conditions of dynamic load and creep of the surrounding rock; the deformation of the rock increases significantly; external bearing structure is far away from the roadway, and thickness of the bearing structure increases; anchor cable support and floor pressure relief effect better control over the roof and the roadside deformation and floor heave, respectively; and the thickness of the corresponding external bearing structure is reduced by 30.84% and 41.50%, respectively; and (3) based on the application, the zonal reinforcement scheme of “fix cable to shed, floor pressure relief, deep-shallow composite grouting” is proposed and put into practice, with good results. The results of this study can provide theoretical support and reference for the determination of supporting parameters in deep roadways.

Critical mining under buildings, railways, and water bodies (BRW) brings the contradiction between high recovery rate and minor environmental hazards. To lessen this contradiction, an innovative mining method referred to as “wide strip backfill mining” (WSBM) was proposed in this study. A Winkler beam model is applied to the primary key strata (PKS), and the study revealed a surface subsidence control mechanism and designed the technical parameters of the method. The respective numerical simulations suggested the feasibility of the proposed method and the main influencing factors on surface subsidence can be ranked in descending order as wide filling strip width (WFSW), filling ratio, and pillar width. Meanwhile, a drop in the WFSW from 96 m to 72 m brought out the surface subsidence reduction by 44.5%. By using the super-high water content filling material, the proposed method was applied in the Taoyi coal mine under critical mining conditions. The resulting surface subsidence and deformations met the safety requirements for building protection level 1, and the recovery rate reached 75.9%. Moreover, the application of the method achieved significant technical and economic benefits. The research can provide a theoretical and experimental substantiation for critical mining under BRW.

The efficient and safe extraction of ultra-thick coal seam in the Xinjiang East Junggar Basin has been a major focus in the future of mining in China. This paper systematically studied the overburden strata fracturing process and the structure evolution characteristics based on a typical ultra-thick coal seam condition in Xinjiang, using both physical and numerical modeling studies. The interactions between shields and the roof strata were also examined, from the perspective of ground support. The results indicated that roof structure was mainly in the form of voussoir beam at the early mining stage, where overburden stability was affected by the rock mass properties and mining parameters. The support load mainly included top coal and immediate roof gravity load and the load caused by main roof rotary consolidation. As a result of mining disturbance and strata movement, the overlying strata re-fractured in the later mining stage. The roof structure changed from beam to arch gradually and propagates upwards with the increase of multi-layer mining times. The support load was mainly the gravity load of the friable rock mass within compression arch. The results will provide a guideline for the improvement of roof stability under similar mining conditions in Xinjiang.

This study systematically investigates the overburden movement and strata behavior at a fully-mechanized top coal caving (FMTCC) face in a thick coal seam in a loess-covered gullied region by field measurement and theoretical analysis. A comparative analysis was performed to examine how the attitude of surface gullies and the structure of overburden affect face support resistance. The characteristics and evolution mechanism of strata behavior during FMTCC under gully slopes in a loess-covered gullied region were discovered through a mechanical analysis of the roof structure and a comparison to the mining of a typical shallow seam under gully slopes. The study found that as the FMTCC face advanced, the strata behavior initiated in the middle part of the face and then continued to both ends, and its intensity was higher in the middle part than in the upper and lower parts. During mining under gullies, the increases in support resistance were generally less than 5% (except for the maximum increases of 7–9%), indicating that the occurrence of gullies on the surface had little influence on the strata behavior at the FMTCC face. Due to the increased burial depth and the number of key strata, the roof at the FMTCC face under gullies formed a stable load-bearing structure called a voussoir beam, which was the key difference from the strata behavior characteristics in the shallow mine under gullies.

The scientific and efficient mining of ultra-thick coal seam in Xinjiang, China is faced with the problems of low exploration level and lack of theoretical research on underground mining. This paper studied occurrence characteristic of ultra-thick coal seams in Xinjiang, using field investigation and drilling exploration. Based on the variation law of support load under different roof bearing structure form and development height in multi-layer mining, classification method and mining technology selection of ultra-thick coal seam were put forward. The results indicate that: (1) The ultra-thick coal seams in Xinjiang have a distribution characteristic of more north and less south, more east and less west, mainly concentrate in East Junggar and Turpan-Harmi coalfields. The form of the ultra-thick coal seam has the remarkable characteristic of coal seams merging and bifurcating. (2) The mechanical model of the relationship between the support and surrounding rock under different roof bearing structures is established. At the early stage of multi-layer mining, the support load includes the load caused by rotary subsidence of the blocks that formed the near-stope roof bearing structure and the gravity load of rock blocks under roof bearing structure. At the later stage, the support load is mainly gravity load of loose blocks below the far-stope roof bearing structure. (3) According the roof bearing structure form, ultra-thick coal seam can be divided into three types: no stable bearing structure, (higher) beam bearing structure and arch bearing structure. In order to ensure the stability of near-stope roof bearing structure, backfill mining, longwall mining, and longwall mining early and backfill mining later should be adopted in three types ultra-thick coal seams mining respectively.

The behavior of the overburden of working face 20104 at the Wangjialing coal mine was investigated using borehole imaging. The measured height of the conductive fracture zone (CFZ) in the overburden, 148 m, is significantly different from the height that is predicted by an empirical formula. The spatial relationships between key strata (KS) required for their fracturing and their influence on the CFZ’s height were analyzed. The results demonstrate that the spatial relationships between adjacent KS are a major factor behind the abnormal increase in the height of CFZ relative to the coal seam. The height of linkage (HoL) between KS was introduced and an equation for calculating this height was proposed. The study found that the fracturing of a KS could induce fracturing of the adjacent KS above it if their height difference was smaller than the HoL between them. Otherwise, the fractures resulting from the lower KS would terminate at the bottom of the higher KS. When the location of a high KS satisfies certain requirement, the spatial linkage between adjacent KS will allow for the conductive fractures arising in a lower KS to propagate through the high KS as well as the strata controlled by it, thus increasing the height of CFZ in overburden.
