In order to solve the path planning problem of an intelligent vehicle in an unknown environment, this paper proposes a map construction and path planning method for mobile robots based on multi-sensor information fusion. Firstly, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used to fuse the ambient information of LiDAR and a depth camera. The pose and acceleration information of the robot is obtained through the pose sensor. The SLAM algorithm based on a fusion of LiDAR, a depth camera, and the inertial measurement unit was built. Secondly, the improved ant colony algorithm was used to carry out global path planning. Meanwhile, the dynamic window method was used to realize local planning and local obstacle avoidance. Finally, experiments were carried out on a robot platform to verify the reliability of the proposed method. The experiment results showed that the map constructed by multi-sensor information fusion was closer to the real environment, and the accuracy and robustness of SLAM were effectively improved. The turning angle of the path was smoothed using the improved ant colony algorithm, and the real-time obstacle avoidance was able to be realized using the dynamic window method. The efficiency of path planning was improved, and the automatic feedback control of the intelligent vehicle was able to be realized.
Traffic sign detection is an essential component of an intelligent transportation system, since it provides critical road traffic data for vehicle decision-making and control. To solve the challenges of small traffic signs, inconspicuous characteristics, and low detection accuracy, a traffic sign recognition method based on improved (You Only Look Once v3) YOLOv3 is proposed. The spatial pyramid pooling structure is fused into the YOLOv3 network structure to achieve the fusion of local features and global features, and the fourth feature prediction scale of 152 × 152 size is introduced to make full use of the shallow features in the network to predict small targets. Furthermore, the bounding box regression is more stable when the distance-IoU (DIoU) loss is used, which takes into account the distance between the target and anchor, the overlap rate, and the scale. The Tsinghua–Tencent 100K (TT100K) traffic sign dataset’s 12 anchors are recalculated using the K-means clustering algorithm, while the dataset is balanced and expanded to address the problem of an uneven number of target classes in the TT100K dataset. The algorithm is compared to YOLOv3 and other commonly used target detection algorithms, and the results show that the improved YOLOv3 algorithm achieves a mean average precision (mAP) of 77.3%, which is 8.4% higher than YOLOv3, especially in small target detection, where the mAP is improved by 10.5%, greatly improving the accuracy of the detection network while keeping the real-time performance as high as possible. The detection network’s accuracy is substantially enhanced while keeping the network’s real-time performance as high as possible.

Aiming at the optimal path and planning efficiency of global path planning for intelligent driving, this paper proposes a global dynamic path planning method based on improved algorithm. First, this method improves the heuristic function of the traditional algorithm to improve the efficiency of global path planning. Second, this method uses a path optimization strategy to make the global path smoother. Third, this method is combined with the dynamic window method to improve the real-time performance of the dynamic obstacle avoidance of the intelligent vehicle. Finally, the global dynamic path planning method of the proposed improved algorithm is verified through simulation experiments and real vehicle tests. In the simulation analysis, compared with the modified algorithm and the traditional algorithm, the method in this paper shortens the path distance by 2.5%∼3.0%, increases the efficiency by 10.3%∼13.6% and generates a smoother path. In the actual vehicle test, the vehicle can avoid dynamic obstacles in real time. Therefore, the method proposed in this paper can be applied on the intelligent vehicle platform. The path planning efficiency is high, and the dynamic obstacle avoidance is good in real time.
Designed to meet the demands of AGV global optimal path planning and dynamic obstacle avoidance, this paper proposes a combination of an improved A* algorithm and dynamic window method fusion algorithm. Firstly, the heuristic function is dynamically weighted to reduce the search scope and improve the planning efficiency; secondly, a path-optimization method is introduced to eliminate redundant nodes and redundant turning points in the path; thirdly, combined with the improved A* algorithm and dynamic window method, the local dynamic obstacle avoidance in the global optimal path is realized. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation experiments. According to the results of simulation analysis, the path-planning time of the improved A* algorithm is 26.3% shorter than the traditional A* algorithm, the search scope is 57.9% less, the path length is 7.2% shorter, the number of path nodes is 85.7% less, and the number of turning points is 71.4% less. The fusion algorithm can evade moving obstacles and unknown static obstacles in different map environments in real time along the global optimal path.

The tire tread depth has strong influence on the braking performance of the vehicle and should be inspected periodically for driving safety. In order to determine the tire tread depth accurately and automatically, a tire tread depth measurement method based on machine vision was developed. During the measuring, a tire tread radial section image formed by a laser plane was captured when the tire rolls over the measuring device. Then, the image was calibrated to eliminate the lens distortion and processed to get the single-pixel center line. Consequently, the center line’s pixel coordinates were transformed to world coordinates with the calibration information of the laser plane, and a profile curve of the tire radial section was obtained. Then, the tread grooves on the profile curve were identified and their positions are determined by an algorithm developed in this research. Finally, the depth of each groove was calculated successively. An experiment was conducted on a prototype system based on the measurement method developed in this article. The experimental result indicates that the measurement method can identify the tire tread groove and determine its position and measure its depth. The depth absolute error is less than 0.2 mm, which can meet the demand of tire tread depth measurement.

In this paper, an improved bidirectional RRT vehicle path planning method for smart vehicle is proposed. In this method, the resultant force of the artificial potential field is used to determine the search direction to improve the search efficiency. Different kinds of constraints are considered in the method, including the vehicle constraints and the vehicle driving environment constraints. The collision detection based on separating axis theorem is used to detect the collision between the vehicle and the obstacles to improve the planning efficiency. The cubic B-spline curve is used to optimize the path to make the path’s curvature continuous. Both simulation and experiment are implemented to verify the proposed improved bidirectional RRT method. In the simulation analysis, this paper’s method can generate the smoothest path and takes the shortest time compared with the other two methods and it can be adaptive to the complicated environment. In the real vehicle experiment, we can see from the test results that this paper’s method can be applied in practice on the smart electric vehicle platform; compared with others’ algorithm, this paper’s algorithm can generate shortest and smoothest path.
