Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a devastating disease of wheat worldwide. In addition to reducing the yield of the crop, the causal pathogens also produce mycotoxins that can contaminate the grain. The development of resistant wheat varieties is one of the best ways to reduce the impact of FHB. To develop such varieties, breeders must expose germplasm lines to the pathogen in the field and assess the disease reaction. Phenotyping breeding materials for resistance to FHB is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and expensive when using conventional protocols. To develop a reliable and cost-effective high throughput phenotyping system for assessing FHB in the field, we focused on developing a method for processing color images of wheat spikes to accurately detect diseased areas using deep learning and image processing techniques. Color images of wheat spikes at the milk stage were collected in a shadow condition and processed to construct datasets, which were used to retrain a deep convolutional neural network model using transfer learning. Testing results showed that the model detected spikes very accurately in the images since the coefficient of determination for the number of spikes tallied by manual count and the model was 0.80. The model was assessed, and the mean average precision for the testing dataset was 0.9201. On the basis of the results for spike detection, a new color feature was applied to obtain the gray image of each spike and a modified region-growing algorithm was implemented to segment and detect the diseased areas of each spike. Results showed that the region growing algorithm performed better than the K-means and Otsu’s method in segmenting diseased areas. We demonstrated that deep learning techniques enable accurate detection of FHB in wheat based on color image analysis, and the proposed method can effectively detect spikes and diseased areas, which improves the efficiency of the FHB assessment in the field.

Aims: Sustained activation of β-adrenergic signalling induces cardiac fibrosis, which marks progression to heart failure. GHSR (growth hormone secretagogue receptor) is the receptor for ghrelin, which is an orexigenic gastric hormone with newly defined cardiovascular effects. The present study determined the effects of GHSR deficiency in a mouse model of isoproterenol (ISO)-induced cardiac fibrosis and examined the underlying mechanism. Methods and results: Histochemical studies showed that GHSR deficiency exacerbated cardiac fibrosis. Quantitative RT–PCR, western blotting, and immunofluorescence staining demonstrated that cardiac fibroblasts isolated from GHSR−/− mice exhibited increased expression of marker genes for myofibroblast trans-differentiation (α-SMA, SM22, and calponin) upon transforming growth factor-β treatment compared to wild-type mice. RNA-sequencing of heart transcriptomes revealed that differentially expressed genes in GHSR−/− hearts were enriched in such biological processes as extracellular matrix organization, inflammatory response, lipid metabolism, cell cycle, migration, and adhesion. Particularly, GHSR deficiency increased Wnt/β-catenin pathway activation in ISO-induced myocardial fibrosis. In addition, loss of GHSR in macrophages instigated inflammasome activation with increased cleavage and release of interleukin-18.Conclusion: These results for the first time demonstrated that GHSR deficiency aggravated ISO-induced cardiac fibrosis, suggesting that GHSR was a potential target for the intervention of cardiac fibrosis.

Orchard machinery autonomous navigation is helpful for improving the efficiency of fruit production and reducing labor costs. Path planning is one of the core technologies of autonomous navigation for orchard machinery. As normally planted in straight and parallel rows, fruit trees are natural landmarks that can provide suitable cues for orchard intelligent machinery. This paper presents a novel method to realize path planning based on computer vision technologies. We combine deep learning and the least-square (DL-LS) algorithm to carry out a new navigation line extraction algorithm for orchard scenarios. First, a large number of actual orchard images are collected and processed for training the YOLO V3 model. After the training, the mean average precision (MAP) of the model for trunk and tree detection can reach 92.11%. Secondly, the reference point coordinates of the fruit trees are calculated with the coordinates of the bounding box of trunks. Thirdly, the reference lines of fruit trees growing on both sides are fitted by the least-square method and the navigation line for the orchard machinery is determined by the two reference lines. Experimental results show that the trained YOLO V3 network can identify the tree trunk and the fruit tree accurately and that the new navigation line of fruit tree rows can be extracted effectively. The accuracy of orchard centerline extraction is 90.00%.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) disease is extensively distributed worldwide. This disease damages grain quality and reduces yield. The detection of this disease in a high throughput way is crucial to planters and breeders. Our study focused on developing a method for processing wheat color images and accurately detecting disease areas using deep learning and image processing techniques. The color images of wheat at the milky stage were collected and processed to construct datasets, which were used to retrain a deep convolutional neural network model using transfer learning. Testing results showed that the model can detect spikes, and the coefficient of determination of the number of spikes between the manual count and the detection was 0.80. On the basis of the results of spike detection, a new color feature was applied to obtain the gray image of each spike. Then, a modified region growing algorithm was implemented to segment and detect the diseased areas of each spike. Results show that the region growing algorithm performs better than K-means and Otsu’s method in segmenting the FHB disease. Overall, this study demonstrates that deep learning techniques enable the accurate detection of FHB in wheat using color images, and the proposed method can effectively detect spikes and diseased areas, thereby improving the efficiency of FHB detection.
