Deep convolutional neural networks have been successfully applied to face detection recently. Despite making remarkable progress, most of the existing detection methods only localize each face using a bounding box, which cannot segment each face from the background image simultaneously. To overcome this drawback, we present a face detection and segmentation method based on improved Mask R-CNN, named G-Mask, which incorporates face detection and segmentation into one framework aiming to obtain more fine-grained information of face. Specifically, in this proposed method, ResNet-101 is utilized to extract features, RPN is used to generate RoIs, and RoIAlign faithfully preserves the exact spatial locations to generate binary mask through Fully Convolution Network (FCN). Furthermore, Generalized Intersection over Union (GIoU) is used as the bounding box loss function to improve the detection accuracy. Compared with Faster R-CNN, Mask R-CNN, and Multitask Cascade CNN, the proposed G-Mask method has achieved promising results on FDDB, AFW, and WIDER FACE benchmarks.

Introduction: Efficiently recognizing emotions is a critical pursuit in brain–computer interface (BCI), as it has many applications for intelligent healthcare services. In this work, an innovative approach inspired by the genetic code in bioinformatics, which utilizes brain rhythm code features consisting of δ, θ, α, β, or γ, is proposed for electroencephalography (EEG)-based emotion recognition. Methods: These features are first extracted from the sequencing technique. After evaluating them using four conventional machine learning classifiers, an optimal channel-specific feature that produces the highest accuracy in each emotional case is identified, so emotion recognition through minimal data is realized. By doing so, the complexity of emotion recognition can be significantly reduced, making it more achievable for practical hardware setups. Results: The best classification accuracies achieved for the DEAP and MAHNOB datasets range from 83–92%, and for the SEED dataset, it is 78%. The experimental results are impressive, considering the minimal data employed. Further investigation of the optimal features shows that their representative channels are primarily on the frontal region, and associated rhythmic characteristics are typical of multiple kinds. Additionally, individual differences are found, as the optimal feature varies with subjects.Discussion: Compared to previous studies, this work provides insights into designing portable devices, as only one electrode is appropriate to generate satisfactory performances. Consequently, it would advance the understanding of brain rhythms, which offers an innovative solution for classifying EEG signals in diverse BCI applications, including emotion recognition.

Background: Mental health issues are increasingly prominent worldwide, posing significant threats to patients and deeply affecting their families and social relationships. Traditional diagnostic methods are subjective and delayed, indicating the need for an objective and effective early diagnosis method. Methods: To this end, this paper proposes a lightweight detection method for multi-mental disorders with fewer data sources, aiming to improve diagnostic procedures and enable early patient detection. First, the proposed method takes Electroencephalography (EEG) signals as sources, acquires brain rhythms through Discrete Wavelet Decomposition (DWT), and extracts their approximate entropy, fuzzy entropy, permutation entropy, and sample entropy to establish the entropy-based matrix. Then, six kinds of conventional machine learning classifiers, including Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), Naive Bayes (NB), Generalized Additive Model (GAM), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and Decision Tree (DT), are adopted for the entropy-based matrix to achieve the detection task. Their performances are assessed by accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-score. Concerning these experiments, three public datasets of schizophrenia, epilepsy, and depression are utilized for method validation. Results: The analysis of the results from these datasets identifies the representative single-channel signals (schizophrenia: O1, epilepsy: F3, depression: O2), satisfying classification accuracies (88.10%, 75.47%, and 89.92%, respectively) with minimal input. Conclusions: Such performances are impressive when considering fewer data sources as a concern, which also improves the interpretability of the entropy features in EEG, providing a reliable detection approach for multi-mental disorders and advancing insights into their underlying mechanisms and pathological states.

Entropy-based analyses have emerged as a powerful tool for quantifying the complexity, regularity, and information content of complex biological signals, such as electroencephalography (EEG). In this regard, EEG-based lie detection offers the advantage of directly providing more objective and less susceptible-to-manipulation results compared to traditional polygraph methods. To this end, this study proposes a novel multi-scale entropy approach by fusing fuzzy entropy (FE), time-shifted multi-scale fuzzy entropy (TSMFE), and hierarchical multi-band fuzzy entropy (HMFE), which enables the multidimensional characterization of EEG signals. Subsequently, using machine learning classifiers, the fused feature vector is applied to lie detection, with a focus on channel selection to investigate distinguished neural signatures across brain regions. Experiments utilize a publicly benchmarked LieWaves dataset, and two parts are performed. One is a subject-dependent experiment to identify representative channels for lie detection. Another is a cross-subject experiment to assess the generalizability of the proposed approach. In the subject-dependent experiment, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) achieves impressive accuracies of 82.74% under leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) and 82.00% under 10-fold cross-validation. The cross-subject experiment yields an accuracy of 64.07% using a radial basis function (RBF) kernel support vector machine (SVM) under leave-one-subject-out cross-validation (LOSOCV). Furthermore, regarding the channel selection results, PZ (parietal midline) and T7 (left temporal) are considered the representative channels for lie detection, as they exhibit the most prominent occurrences among subjects. These findings demonstrate that the PZ and T7 play vital roles in the cognitive processes associated with lying, offering a solution for designing portable EEG-based lie detection devices with fewer channels, which also provides insights into neural dynamics by analyzing variations in multi-scale entropy.
