Polyethylene (PE) based composites with segregated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) network was successfully prepared by hot compressing of a mechanical mixture of PE and CNT powders. Through comparison with a composite comprising randomly distributed carbon nanotubes of the same concentration, we prove that namely the segregated CNT network is responsible for the excellent electrical properties, i.e., 10−1 S/m at 0.5–1% and 10 S/m at 6–12% of CNT. The investigation of the complex impedance in the frequency range 1 kHz–2 MHz shows that the sign of real part of the dielectric permittivity ε r ′ changes from positive to negative in electrically percolated composites indicating metal-like behavior of CNT segregated network. The obtained negative permittivity and AC conductivity behavior versus frequency for high CNT content (3–12%) are described by the Drude model. At the same time, in contrast to reflective metals, high electromagnetic shielding efficiency of fabricated PE composites in the frequency range 40–60 GHz, i.e., close to 100% at 1 mm thick sample, was due to absorption coursed by multiple reflection on every PE-CNT segregated network interface followed by electromagnetic radiation absorbed in each isolated PE granule surrounded by conductive CNT shells.

Large-scale applications of real-time terahertz (THz) imaging are often limited by the spatial resolution of a THz microscope. One of the simplest approaches to circumvent this problem in practice and achieve resolution below the diffraction limit consists in placing a dielectric particle with a size comparable to the radiation wavelength in the vicinity of the focal plane of the THz imaging system. Here, we theoretically consider the transmittance of a THz Gaussian beam through a Teflon sphere to further analyze experimental results on THz superresolution imaging. We address the resolution beyond the diffraction limit (the experimentally determined value is 0.38λ at 0.46 THz) through the superlens effect of the terajet generated by the mesoscale sphere owing to propagating and evanescent partial waves in the terajet. Due to the coupling of the dielectric sphere and time-domain THz spectrometer, we can detect a 10 µm thick PTFE film, which is almost transparent (98% transmittance) in the THz frequency range. The correlation between the transmittance spectrum of the dielectric sphere and the quality of THz images of thin, nonconducting films collected at different frequencies has been demonstrated experimentally and considered analytically. Our study is relevant for hyperspectral imaging applications and further development of the sphere-coupled time-domain THz imaging technique.

We report the performance of a graphene-enhanced THz grating fabricated by depositing a gold layer on the femtosecond micromachined SiO2 substrate. The morphology of the gold plated patterned substrate was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), while the quality of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene was evaluated by Raman spectroscopy. The electromagnetic (EM) response of the metasurface comprising the graphene sheet and the gold plated substrate was studied by THz time domain spectroscopy in the 100 GHz–1 THz frequency range. We employed the finite elements method (FEM) to model the metasurface EM response by adjusting the ac conductivity of the gold layer covering the patterned SiO2 substrate to reproduce the measured transmission/reflection spectra. The results of the numerical simulation reveal the impact of the imperfectness of the gold layer on the performance of the THz metasurface. The experimental results are well described in terms of the Drude–Smith model of metal conductivity that takes into account the anisotropic scattering of the carriers in thin metal films.

We propose an original technique for the grating metasurfaces fabrication by low-power ultraviolet laser treatment of fluorinated graphene (FG) films with the focus on terahertz applications. The laser treatment reduces dielectric FG to its conductive counterparts, increasing DC conductivity to 170 S·m−1 for treated areas. The electromagnetic response of the grating metasurfaces studied by THz time-domain spectroscopy in the 100 GHz–1 THz frequency range demonstrates enhanced resonant transmittance through metasurfaces. The intensity and position of transmittance peak could be tuned by changing the metasurface geometry, i.e. the period of the structure and width of the reduced and unreduced areas. In particular, the decrease of the reduced FG area width from 400 to 170 μm leads to the shift of the resonance peak from 0.45 THz to the higher frequencies, 0.85 THz. Theoretical description based on the multipole theory supported by finite element numerical calculations confirms the excitation of the dark state in the metasurface unit cells comprising reduced and unreduced FG areas at resonance frequency determined by the structure geometrical features. Fabricated metasurfaces have been proved to be efficient narrowband polarizers being rotated by 50° about the incident THz field vector.

Charge-transfer organic-inorganic complexes have demonstrated great potential in optoelectronic applications. Herein, a drop-casting processed photodetector based on thick composite films made of multi-layered MoS2 nanosheets chemically bonded to linear molecules of aromatic thiols has been developed. Composites based on multilayered nanosheets allow for facile preparation of low-cost, large-area, and flexible devices. It was demonstrated that a simple functionalization of ultradispersed MoS2 nanosheets with linear aromatic thiol results in the formation of charge and energy transfer complexes. A photodetector with functionalized MoS2 nanosheet film prepared by drop coating with Au electrodes demonstrated enhanced performance compared to pure materials. Our first experiments illustrated that functionalization of MoS2 nanosheets by a paraquaterphenyl thiol derivative leads to a significant increase in the photoresponse speed (by a factor of 12) and decay speed (by a factor of 17.5), in addition to the enhancement of the photostability of the MoS2 based photodetector. The photo current value has been increased by about an order of magnitude. The proposed approach offers promising prospects for further development of photodetectors.
