This systematic literature review delves into the extensive landscape of emotion recognition, sentiment analysis, and affective computing, analyzing 609 articles. Exploring the intricate relationships among these research domains, and leveraging data from four well-established sources—IEEE, Science Direct, Springer, and MDPI—this systematic review classifies studies in four modalities based on the types of data analyzed. These modalities are unimodal, multi-physical, multi-physiological, and multi-physical–physiological. After the classification, key insights about applications, learning models, and data sources are extracted and analyzed. This review highlights the exponential growth in studies utilizing EEG signals for emotion recognition, and the potential of multimodal approaches combining physical and physiological signals to enhance the accuracy and practicality of emotion recognition systems. This comprehensive overview of research advances, emerging trends, and limitations from 2018 to 2023 underscores the importance of continued exploration and interdisciplinary collaboration in these rapidly evolving fields.

The aim of this work is to establish a new methodology to tackle the multi-objective transportation problems [MOTP] in a Fermatean fuzzy environment that can deal with all the parameters that possess a conflicting nature. In our research work, we developed a new score function in the context of a fermatean nature for converting fuzzy data into crisp data with the help of the Fermatean fuzzy technique. Then, we introduced an algorithm-based methodology, i.e., the Fermatean Fuzzy Programming approach to tackle transportation problems with multi-objectives. The main purpose of this research work is to give an alternate fuzzy programming approach to handle the MOTP. To justify the potential and validity of our work, numerical computations have been carried out using our proposed methodology.

Emotion recognition based on electroencephalogram signals (EEG) has been analyzed extensively in different applications, most of them using medical-grade equipment in laboratories. The trend in human-centered artificial intelligence applications is toward using portable sensors with reduced size and improved portability that can be taken to real life scenarios, which requires systems that efficiently analyze information in real time. Currently, there is no specific set of features or specific number of electrodes defined to classify specific emotions using EEG signals, and performance may be improved with the combination of all available features but could result in high dimensionality and even worse performance; to solve the problem of high dimensionality, this paper proposes the use of genetic algorithms (GA) to automatically search the optimal subset of EEG data for emotion classification. Publicly available EEG data with 2548 features describing the waves related to different emotional states are analyzed, and then reduced to 49 features with genetic algorithms. The results show that only 49 features out of the 2548 can be sufficient to create machine learning (ML) classification models with, using algorithms such as k-nearest neighbor (KNN), random forests (RF) and artificial neural networks (ANN), obtaining results with 90.06%, 93.62% and 95.87% accuracy, respectively, which are higher than the 87.16% and 89.38% accuracy of previous works.

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing worldwide, causing health and economic implications. One of the principal microvascular complications of type 2 diabetes is Distal Symmetric Polyneuropathy (DSPN), affecting 42.6% of the population in Mexico. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find out the predictors of this complication. The dataset contained a total number of 140 subjects, including clinical and paraclinical features. A multivariate analysis was constructed using Boruta as a feature selection method and Random Forest as a classification algorithm applying the strategy of K-Folds Cross Validation and Leave One Out Cross Validation. Then, the models were evaluated through a statistical analysis based on sensitivity, specificity, area under the curve (AUC) and receiving operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The results present significant values obtained by the model with this approach, presenting 67% of AUC with only three features as predictors. It is possible to conclude that this proposed methodology can classify patients with DSPN, obtaining a preliminary computer-aided diagnosis tool for the clinical area in helping to identify the diagnosis of DSPN.

Diabetes is a chronic and noncommunicable but preventable disease that is affecting the Mexican population at worrying levels, being the first place in prevalence worldwide. Early diabetes detection has become important to prevent other health conditions that involve low organ yield until the patient death. Based on this problem, this work proposes the architecture of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for the automated classification of healthy patients from diabetics patients. The analysis was performed used a set of 19 para-clinical features to determine the health status of the patients. The developed model was evaluated through a statistical analysis based on the calculation of the loss function, accuracy, area under the curve (AUC) and receiving operating characteristics (ROC) curve. The results obtained present statistically significant values, with accuracy of 0.94 and AUC values of 0.98. Based on these results, it is possible to conclude that the ANN implemented in this work can classify patients with presence of diabetes from controls with significant accuracy, presenting preliminary results for the development of a diagnostic tool that can be supportive for health specialists.

Background/Objectives: The increase in patients with type 2 diabetes, coupled with the development of complications caused by the same disease is an alarming aspect for the health sector. One of the main complications of diabetes is nephropathy, which is also the main cause of kidney failure. Once diagnosed, in Mexican patients the kidney damage is already highly compromised, which is why acting preventively is extremely important. The aim of this research is to compare distinct methodologies of feature selection to identify discriminant risk factors that may be beneficial for early treatment, and prevention. Methods: This study focused on evaluating a Mexican dataset collected from 22 patients containing 32 attributes. To reduce the dimensionality and choose the most important variables, four feature selection algorithms: Univariate, Boruta, Galgo, and Elastic net were implemented. After selecting suitable features detected by the methodologies, they are included in the random forest classifier, obtaining four models. Results: Galgo with Random Forest achieved the best performance with only three predictors, “creatinine”, “urea”, and “lipids treatment”. The model displayed a moderate classification performance with an area under the curve of 0.80 (±0.3535 SD), a sensitivity of 0.909, and specificity of 0.818. Conclusions: It is demonstrated that the proposed methodology has the potential to facilitate the prompt identification of nephropathy and non-nephropathy patients, and thereby could be used in the clinical area as a preliminary computer-aided diagnosis tool.
