Biomass is a low-cost, abundant and renewable resource that can be used to manufacture porous carbon-based materials for a variety of applications. Different mesoporous carbon supports can be obtained from the various synthetic approaches that are aimed at increasing the specific surface area and functionalization. Currently, most of the biomass is used for energy recovery. The circular economy approach could lead to the development of cheap and sustainable materials, and turning of wastes into a precious resource. In this review, we provide the recent advances in the field of electrochemistry for porous carbon materials derived from biomass, which offers wider applications in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) and Zn-air batteries (ZABs). The focus is on understanding the required properties of the materials and the role of synthetic pathways in platinum group metal (PGM) free electrocatalysts. The most promising materials are evaluated towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in PEMFC, AEMFC, and ZAB. The results achieved showed that the expected performances on these energy conversion devices still lack for deployment in practice, especially if compared with commercially available PGM-free electrocatalysts. This review article provides insights on how to improve the actual electrocatalytic activity of biomass-derived materials. Graphical Abstract

Zn(II) coordination polymers are being increasingly studied for their stability and properties. Similarly, there is a growing interest in imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine derivatives, which show great potential in luminescence and pharmaceutical applications. In this work, we successfully synthesized and crystallized three new coordination polymers, using Zn(II) as the metallic node, dicarboxylic acids of different length and nature as linkers, and a linear ditopic imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine derivative, to explore the role of this molecule as a propagator of the dimensionality of the structure or as an ancillary ligand. Our work demonstrates the structural capability of imidazo[1,5-a]pyridines in an unexplored domain for this family of ligands. Notably, we observed a pronounced ability of this heterocyclic scaffold to establish π···π interactions in the solid state. The supramolecular π-stacked assemblies were theoretically analyzed using DFT calculations based on model structures.

Cu-based nanomaterials have received considerable attention as promising and cost-effective substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) applications despite their relatively low enhancement factor (EF) compared to noble metals like gold and silver. In this study, a fast and affordable synthesis route is proposed to obtain a three-dimensional porous copper film (NPC) via an electrodeposition technique based on the dynamic hydrogen bubbling template (DHBT). Two sets of NPC film were synthesized, one without additives and the other with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The impacts of deposition time on the NPCs’ porous morphology, thickness, and SERS performance were systematically investigated. With the optimal deposition time, the nanopore sizes could be tailored from 26.8 to 73 μm without additives and from 12.8 to 24 µm in the presence of CTAB. The optimal additive-free NPC film demonstrated excellent SERS performance at 180 s of deposition, while the CTAB-modified film showed strong enhancement at 120 s towards methylene blue (MB), a highly toxic dye, achieving a detection limit of 10−6 M. Additionally, the samples with CTAB showed better efficiency than those without CTAB. The calculated EF of NPC was found to be 5.9 × 103 without CTAB and 2.5 × 103 with the CTAB, indicating the potential of NPC as a cost-effective candidate for high-performance SERS substrates. This comprehensive study provides insights into optimizing the structural morphology of the NPCs to maximize their SERS enhancement factor and improve their detection sensitivity toward MB, thus overcoming the limitations associated with conventional copper-based SERS substrates.

Herein, the structural and photophysical features of two N-based polydentate ligands and the corresponding Zn(II) complexes are investigated. The obtained compounds were characterized using different spectroscopic techniques and their optical properties are discussed in relation to their chemical structure, defined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and mass spectrometry. The spontaneous and quantitative complexation, investigated by UV-Vis, fluorescence, NMR, IR spectroscopies and mass spectrometry, makes these N-based polydentate ligands interesting candidates for possible applications in chelation therapy and in Zn(II) sensors.
