A series of asymmetric and symmetric 1,3-dialkyltriazolium iodides were studied with hindsight to their application as electrolytes and redox mediators in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Compounds with an alkyl chain length from C4 to C10 present the characteristics of ionic liquids (ILs), whilst those with longer chains exhibit liquid crystallinity. All compounds show an appreciable chemical and thermal stability with decomposition temperatures around 185–195 °C. Testing these compounds as electrolytes and redox mediators in DSSCs reveals significant changes in the properties of the electrolyte upon addition of the redox couple. Addition of iodine generally leads to a depression of the melting point and an enhancement of conductivity. These changes in the electrolyte, which are significant, have so far been largely overlooked in DSSC optimization. Furthermore, in comparison to frequently employed imidazolium iodides, 1-alkyl-3-methyltriazolium iodides show both an improved superior efficiency and an extended cell lifetime. This is attributed to the fact that, unlike the imidazolium salts, the triazolium counterparts are not hygroscopic. The nonhygroscopic nature of the salts also renders device fabrication easier. In addition, electrode passivation, which is commonly observed with imidazolium iodides, could not be noticed for the triazolium analogues, making these materials overall extremely attractive.

A robust general route to lanthanide dicyanamide (DCA–) complexes has been developed where f-element salts are dissolved in DCA–-based ionic liquids (ILs) directly or formed in situ, forcing coordination of these normally weakly coordinating soft N-donor anions, even in an ambient, non-moisture-excluding environment. A series of lanthanide complexes [C2mim][Ln(DCA)4(H2O)4] (C2mim = 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium; Ln = La, Nd, Eu, Tb, Dy, and Yb) and [C2mim]3n[La(OH2)4(μ2-DCA)4]n[La(OH2)2(μ3-DCA)3(μ2-DCA)4]2n(Cl)4n were crystallized under a variety of conditions using this methodology and structurally characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction. Although not all examples were isostructural, the dominant feature across the series was the presence of [Ln(DCA)4(H2O)4]− anionic nodes with all terminal DCA– ligands accepting hydrogen bonds from the coordinated water molecules forming a 3D metal organic framework. To determine if any structural clues might aid in the further development of the synthetic methodology, the metal-free IL [C1mim][DCA] (C1mim = 1,3-dimethylimidazolium), a room-temperature solid, crystalline analogue of the reaction IL, which is liquid at room temperature, was also prepared and structurally characterized. The ready isolation of these compounds allowed us to begin an investigation of the physical properties such as the luminescence at room and low temperatures for the Eu, Tb, and Dy representatives.
Olivine-type lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, LFP) lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become a popular choice for electric vehicles (EVs) and stationary energy storage systems. In the context of recycling, this study addresses the complex challenge of separating black mass of spent LFP batteries from its main composing materials to allow for direct recycling. In this study, 71% copper and 81% aluminium foil impurities were removed by sieving black mass to <250 µm. Next, the application of froth flotation as a separation technique was explored, examining the influence of chemical agents, pre-treatment, and multi-step processes. Frother agent addition improved material recovery in the froth, while collector addition influenced the separation efficiency and enhanced graphite recovery. Pre-treatment, particularly sonication, was found to break down agglomerates and further improve separation. Multi-step flotation increased the purity of recovered fractions. The optimized process for a black mass < 250 µm, involving sonication pre-treatment and double flotation, resulted in enriched carbonaceous material (80.3 mol%) in froth fractions and high LFP concentration (81.9 mol%) in tailings fractions. The recovered spent LFP cathode material contained 37.20 wt% Fe2P2O7, a degradation product of LiFePO4. This research offers valuable insights for the development of efficient battery recycling methods for LFP batteries.
Ionic liquids – ionic crystals – ionic liquid crystals? Structural order in imidazolium-based ILs, a series of asymmetrical 1-dodecyl-2-methyl-3-alkylimidazolium bromides, [C12C1Cnim][Br] with n = 0–12.
Treatment of the known half-sandwich complexes of the type [(η6-C6H6)RuCl2(P(OR)3)] (R = Me or Ph) with SnCl2 yielded three new half-sandwich ruthenium complexes (C1–C3): [(η6-C6H6)RuCl(SnCl3)(P(OMe)3)] (C1), [(η6-C6H6)RuCl(SnCl3)(P(OPh)3)] (C2) and the bis-stannyl complex [(η6-C6H6)Ru(SnCl3)2(P(OMe)3)] (C3) by facile insertion of SnCl2 into the Ru–Cl bonds. Treatment of the known complexes [(η6-C6H6)RuCl(SnCl3)(PPh3)] and [(η6-C6H6)RuCl2(PPh3)] with 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DAMP) and ammonium tetrafluoroborate afforded the complex salts: [(η6-C6H6)Ru(SnCl3)(PPh3)(DAMP)]+BF4− (C4) and [(η6-C6H6)RuCl(PPh3)(DAMP)]+BF4− (C5) respectively. Complexes C1–C5 have been fully characterized by spectroscopic means (IR, UV–vis, multinuclear NMR, ESI–MS) and their thermal behaviour elucidated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Structural characterization by single crystal X-ray crystallography of the novel complex C2 and [(η6-C6H6)RuCl2(P(OPh)3)], the latter having escaped elucidation by this method, is also reported. Finally, the cytotoxicity of the complexes was determined on the A2780 (human ovarian cancer), A2780cisR (human ovarian cis-platin-resistant cancer), and the HEK293 (human embryonic kidney) cell lines and discussed, and an attempt is made to elucidate the effect of the stannyl ligand on cytotoxicity.
