The aim of this study is to conduct accuracy analyses of Land Use Land Cover (LULC) classifications derived from Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 data, and to reveal which dataset present better accuracy results. Zonguldak city and its near surrounding was selected as study area for this case study. Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) and Landsat-8 the Operational Land Imager (OLI) data, acquired on 6 April 2016 and 3 April 2016 respectively, were utilized as satellite imagery in the study. The RGB and NIR bands of Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 were used for classification and comparison. Pan-sharpening process was carried out for Landsat-8 data before classification because the spatial resolution of Landsat-8 (30m) is far from Sentinel-2 RGB and NIR bands (10m). LULC images were generated using pixel-based Maximum Likelihood (MLC) supervised classification method. As a result of the accuracy assessment, kappa statistics for Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 data were 0.78 and 0.85 respectively. The obtained results showed that Sentinel-2 MSI presents more satisfying LULC images than Landsat-8 OLI data. However, in some areas of Sea class Landsat-8 presented better results than Sentinel-2.

Forest above-ground biomass (AGB) is one of the critical measures of forest resources. Therefore, it is crucial to identify a reliable method to estimate the AGB, especially in the tropics, where forest ecosystems are exposed to several depleting factors, including deforestation, climate change and replacing natural forests with palm oil tree plantations. We investigated the digital elevation data over the forest and uses an artificial intelligence-based approach to develop a method for quick and cost-effective assessment of the AGB. The study was conducted in the tropical peatland rainforest of Brunei Darussalam. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) elevation data product and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) digital elevation data were used. A linear regression (LR) model and three different machine learning (ML) algorithms, i.e., Random Forest (RF), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machines (SVM), were tested and compared. As model inputs, the SRTM elevation and distance from the peat dome’s center, a feature of a peatland swamp forest, were used. ML methods were trained on the samples taken from the LiDAR elevations. The validation results showed that the SVM was the best method to predict AGB in the study area with R2 = 0.70, RMSE = 83.65 Mg ha-1, and MAE = 74.43 Mg ha-1, which in relative terms corresponds to approximately 6% of the AGB of the forest of interests. This study demonstrated the potential of ML algorithms in AGB estimation based on canopy height derived from the InSAR-based DEM in tropical forests.
Urban vegetation plays an important role for sustainable development policies, environmental conservation and urban planning process of a city. It is necessary to detect the amount of green areas and their distribution to form the ecosystem model of the urban environment. It is quite important to use satellite imagery having different ground sampling distance (GSD) in the economic and accurate detection of urban green areas. Especially object-based image analysis has been frequently used today for object extraction processes. In object-oriented image analysis, not only pixel gray values but also spectral and contextual data that help to distinguish the segments consisting of interrelated pixels on the image are used. For this reason, more positive results are obtained in comparison with pixel-based approaches. In this study, city center of Bartin, in which there is a rich amount of green areas and its vicinity was chosen as the test area. As the satellite image data, LANDSAT 7 ETM+ (28.5 m GSD), SPOT 4 Level 2 A (20 m GSD) and IKONOS (1 m GSD) were used. Test area was divided into segments involving lots of different classes on each image. Urban vegetation class was formed by determining the suitable functions for the objects which will be involved in the urban vegetation class. eCognition v4.06 software was used for object-based classification analysis. Classification results were transformed into vector data and visual and digital analyses were made using GIS.
