Mapping the world's dry forests: The extent of forest area in dryland habitats, which occupy more than 40% of Earth's land surface, is uncertain compared with that in other biomes. Bastin et al. provide a global estimate of forest extent in drylands, calculated from high-resolution satellite images covering more than 200,000 plots. Forests in drylands are much more extensive than previously reported and cover a total area similar to that of tropical rainforests or boreal forests. This increases estimates of global forest cover by at least 9%, a finding that will be important in estimating the terrestrial carbon sink. Science , this issue p. 635
TanDEM-X Forest/Non-Forest (FNF) map(s) have been one such data focusing on the status of global forest coverage, which has played an essential role in combating climate change. Although the producers have carried out verification and comparison analyses, the need for accuracy assessments in a broader sense creates uncertainties for the users to approve the new data. For this purpose, TanDEM-X 50 m FNF maps were exclusively examined visually through 66,000 test grids within 30 geocells selected from temperate, boreal, and tropical forest zones. Thus, it was aimed to provide product accuracy utilizing visual inspections to the end users of TanDEM-X FNF maps. In addition, Collect Earth (CE) software was used to evaluate the dataset visually, and its advantages or disadvantages were compared with similarly designed studies. Consequently, even though the producers’ data sets were found to have an accuracy of around 85%, it was observed that there were some issues, especially in the definition of the “non-forest” class. CE software was found to be helpful in such studies. However, the dependence of the analyses on geo-browser supplied imagery had some limitations in estimating the accuracy of a new dataset.

Riparian zone ecosystems provide various ecological and societal benefits and play a vital role in preserving biodiversity in fragmented landscapes. These ecosystems land use changes serve as reliable indicators of large-scale ecological system changes. The aim of this study is to monitoring the changes in land use and land cover in riparian zones and how this affects ecosystem services at the Türkiye scale. Many open source platforms that integrate remote sensing and geographic information systems have been frequently used in regional and national scale land monitoring studies in recent years. For this study, Collect Earth, an open source program authorized by the Food and Agriculture Organization, was chosen. Collect Earth is a tool that enables data collection for land monitoring via Google Earth technologies. Analysis indicates that only 2.7% of Türkiye's zones of riparian which is experienced land use changes from 2000 to 2023. While there was a decline in forest land, grassland, and cropland, there was an increase in wetland, settlement, and other land types within Türkiye's riparian zones. Logging, crop cultivation, and road construction are the main drivers of land cover change in these areas. Approximately half of the increase in riparian zones was attributed to cropland expansion. It is crucial to emphasize the importance of integrating the carnage statistics of land use change statistics with areas of gain loss to assess the land capacity of land to provide services of ecosystem. The Collect Earth methodology can aid in evaluating environmental policy objectives and assisting in the riparian zones of regional management and planning.
