Small skin temperature asymmetries are claimed to indicate injuries, but the influence of measurement conditions and technical aspects of image acquisition are concerns for determining temperature asymmetries. This research determines whether distance and camera specifications affect thermal asymmetries detection. We simulated thermal asymmetries filling two glasses with water at different temperatures measured at two distances (0.7 and 1.5 m) using four different infrared cameras (T1020, E60BX, C2 and FLIR ONE). Linear regression verified the similarity between each camera and the T1020 camera (gold standard). The intraclass correlation coefficient assessed the inter-camera reproducibility. Linear regression reported increasing adjustment using mean temperature, with lower values at 1.5 m between the T1020 and FLIR ONE (0.7 m, r = 0.58; 1.5 m, r = 0.34), C2 (0.7 m, r = 0.90; 1.5 m, r = 0.62) and E60BX (0.7 m, r = 0.96; 1.5 m, r = 0.68). Higher inter-camera reproducibility was observed at 0.7 m than 1.5 m. It is preferable to take thermal images with shorter distances and to prioritise cameras with superior hardware characteristics. The portability of FLIR ONE and C2 may be an advantage in studies investigating expected differences greater than 0.05ºC and larger regions of interest.

Lumbar sympathetic blocks (LSBs) are commonly performed to treat pain ailments in the lower limbs. LSBs involve injecting local anesthetic around the nerves. The injection is guided by fluoroscopy which is sometimes considered to be insufficiently accurate. The main aim was to analyze the plantar foot skin temperature data acquired while performing LSBs in patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) affecting the lower limbs. Forty-four LSBs for treating lower limb CRPS in 13 patients were assessed. Pain medicine physicians visualized the infrared thermography (IRT) video in real time and classified the performance depending on the observed thermal changes within the first 4 min. Thirty-two percent of the cases did not register temperature variations after lidocaine was injected, requiring the needle to be relocated. Differences between moments are indicated using the 95% confidence intervals of the differences (CI 95%), the Cohen effect size (ES) and the significance (p value). In successful cases, after injecting lidocaine, increases at minute 7 for the mean (CI 95% (1.4, 2.1 °C), p < 0.001 and ES = 0.5), at minute 5 for maximum temperature (CI 95% (2.3, 3.3 °C), p < 0.001 and ES = 0.6) and at minute 6 for SD (CI 95% (0.2, 0.3 °C), p < 0.001 and ES = 0.5) were observed. The results of our preliminary study showed that the measurement of skin temperature in real time by infrared thermography is valuable for assessing the success of lumbar sympathetic blocks.

Aim To describe the clinical outcomes for a group of complex regional pain syndrome patients using infrared thermography as an intraprocedural support tool when undertaking fluoroscopy-guided lumbar sympathetic blocks.Subjects 27 patients with lower limb complex regional pain syndrome accompanied by severe pain and persistent functional impairment. Methods A series of three fluoroscopic-guided lumbar sympathetic blocks with local anesthetic and corticoids using infrared thermography as an intraprocedural support tool were performed. Clinical variables were collected at baseline, prior to each block, and one, three, and six months after blocks in a standardized checklist assessing each of the clinical categories of complex regional pain syndrome stipulated in the Budapest criteria. Results 23.75% of the blocks required more than one chance to achieve the desired thermal pattern and therefore to be considered as successful. A decrease in pain measured on a visual analogic scale was observed at all time points compared to pre-blockade data, but only 37% of the cases were categorized as responders, representing a >= 30% decrease in VAS, with the disappearance of pain at rest. An improvement of most of the clinical variables recorded was observed, such as tingling, edema, perception of thermal asymmetry, difference in coloring and sweating. There was a significant decrease of neuropathic pain and improvement of functional limitation. Logistic regression analysis showed the main variable to explain the probability of being a responder was immobilization time (odds ratio of 0.89).Conclusion A series of fluoroscopy-guided lumbar sympathetic blocks controlled by infrared thermography in the treatment of lower limb CRPS showed a responder rate of 37%.

This study presents an integrated intervention strategy for the adaptive reuse of vernacular architecture in a state of ruin, focusing on the fortified village of Moya (Cuenca, Spain). The proposal is framed within a rural revitalization program aimed at educational and cultural tourism uses, with the goal of reactivating abandoned built fabric through the incorporation of new functions that generate social value and contribute to territorial development. The proposed methodology combines archival research, digital documentation, material characterization, and a constructive solution based on the insertion of a reversible, structurally autonomous timber volume within the existing stone masonry. Through material characterization, a differentiated consolidation protocol is developed to stabilize the ruins while maintaining historical legibility. The new architectural volume, built with prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) and insulated with locally sourced expanded cork, is designed to meet contemporary standards of energy efficiency, reversibility, and environmental responsibility, while remaining fully independent from the original structure. The intervention offers a replicable model for sustainable rural regeneration, balancing conservation ethics with functional adaptation. Future lines of research include the dynamic simulation of the energy performance of the inserted dwelling, with the aim of assessing its contribution to climate neutrality and net-zero emissions targets.

This paper presents an empirical study based on the learning environment through different data analysis tools. The study is applied to the subject of Theory of Machines and Materials Resistance of the Chemical Engineering degree at the Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain), with the aim of being able to understand and optimise with greater knowledge the way of learning taught, to know what is more difficult for the students and to create a more personalised learning environment. In order to achieve this, it is important to have as much information as possible about the use and usefulness of the resources provided to the students as a teacher. Knowing this data will allow us to provide more efficient resources and to change those that, through data analysis, are not being useful to students. The results of this research show how, through applications such as Learning Analytics, greater performance can be obtained in both teaching and learning.
