The fast-growing wind power industry faces the challenge of reducing operation and maintenance (O&M) costs for wind power plants. Predictive maintenance is essential to improve wind turbine reliability and prolong operation time, thereby reducing the O&M cost for wind power plants. This study presents a solution for predictive maintenance of wind turbine generators. The proposed solution can: (1) predict the remaining useful life (RUL) of wind turbine generators before a fault occurs and (2) diagnose the state of the wind turbine generator when the fault occurs. Moreover, the proposed solution implies low-deployment costs because it relies solely on the information collected from the widely available supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. Extra sensing hardware is needless. The proposed solution has been deployed and evaluated in two real-world wind power plants located in China. The experimental study demonstrates that the RUL of the generators can be predicted 18 days ahead with about an 80% prediction accuracy. When faults occur, the specific type of generator fault can be diagnosed with an accuracy of 94%.

Task allocation is a major challenge in Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS). While previous task allocation approaches follow either the opportunistic or participatory mode, this paper proposes to integrate these two complementary modes in a two-phased hybrid framework called HyTasker. In the offline phase, a group of workers (called opportunistic workers) are selected, and they complete MCS tasks during their daily routines (i.e., opportunistic mode). In the online phase, we assign another set of workers (called participatory workers) and require them to move specifically to perform tasks that are not completed by the opportunistic workers (i.e., participatory mode). Instead of considering these two phases separately, HyTasker jointly optimizes them with a total incentive budget constraint. In particular, when selecting opportunistic workers in the offline phase of HyTasker, we propose a novel algorithm that simultaneously considers the predicted task assignment for the participatory workers, in which the density and mobility of participatory workers are taken into account. Experiments on a real-world mobility dataset demonstrate that HyTasker outperforms other methods with more completed tasks under the same budget constraint.

Recent years have witnessed rapid development in the research area of WiFi sensing, which senses human activities in a contactless and non-intrusive manner. One major issue that hinders real-world deployment of these systems is position dependence, i.e., once the human target changes location and orientation, the sensing performance degrades significantly. Existing machine learning based methods aim to solve this problem by either generating high-dimensional features or transfer learning the environment knowledge. However, these methods require significant training effort and yet acquire limited improvement. In this paper, we start by understanding and analyzing the Doppler frequency shift in WiFi sensing. We then develop a WiFi frequency model to quantify the relationship between signal frequency and target position, motion direction and speed for human activities. Based on this theoretical model, we prove that the commonly-used movement speed and motion direction features are position dependent, and further identify movement fragments and relative motion direction changes as two position-independent features. Building upon the position-independent features, we design a suite of position-independent gestures and develop the gesture recognition system accordingly. Evaluation results show that under various conditions (i.e., different locations, orientations, environments, and persons), our system achieves more than 96% recognition accuracy without any training, significantly outperforming state-of-the-art machine learning based solutions.

Online social networks (OSNs) have become a powerful tool to study collective human responses to extreme events such as earthquakes. Most previous research concentrated on a single platform and utilized users’ behaviors on a single platform to study people’s general responses. In this study, we explore the characteristics of people’s behaviors on different OSNs and conduct a cross-platform analysis of public responses to earthquakes. Our findings support the Uses and Gratification theory that users on Reddit and Twitter are engaging with platforms that they may feel best reflect their sense of self. Using the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquakes as our study cases, we collected 510,579 tweets and 45,770 Reddit posts (including 1437 submissions and 44,333 comments) to answer the following research questions: (1) What were the similarities and differences between public responses on Twitter and Reddit? (2) Considering the different mechanisms of Twitter and Reddit, what unique information of public responses can we learn from Reddit as compared with Twitter? By answering these research questions, we aim to bridge the gap of cross-platform public responses research towards natural hazards. Our study evinces that the users on the two different platforms have both different topics of interest and different sentiments towards the same earthquake, which indicates the necessity of investigating cross-platform OSNs to reveal a more comprehensive picture of people’s general public responses towards certain disasters. Our analysis also finds that r/conspiracy subreddit is one of the major venues where people discuss the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquakes on Reddit and different misinformation/conspiracies spread on Twitter and Reddit platforms (e.g., “Big one is coming” on Twitter and “Nuclear test” on Reddit).

Operation anomalies are common phenomena in large-scale solar farms. Effective anomaly detection and classification is essential for improving operation reliability and electricity generation. However, this is a challenging task due to the high complexity and wide variety of frequently occurring anomalies. Furthermore, existing pre-installed supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA) can only provide a limited amount of information regarding the healthy condition of solar farms, making accurate anomaly detection and classification difficult. This paper presents a data-driven anomaly detection and classification solution, which can accurately detect and classify diverse photovoltaic system anomalies. The proposed solution does not require additional equipment or non-SCADA data collection. More specifically, the proposed work consists of two methods: (1) a hierarchical context-aware anomaly detection method using unsupervised learning, and (2) a multimodal anomaly classification method. The proposed solution has been deployed in two large-scale solar farms (39.36 MWp and 21.62 MWp). Multi-month operation demonstrates the effectiveness, robustness, as well as cost- and computation-efficiency of the proposed solution.
