Introduction: Microplastics (MPs) are widely distributed in the environment, causing damage to biota and human health. Due to their physicochemical characteristics, they become resistant particles to environmental degradation, leading to their accumulation in large quantities in the terrestrial ecosystem. Thus, there is an urgent need for measures to mitigate such pollution, with biological degradation being a viable alternative, where bacteria play a crucial role, demonstrating high efficiency in degrading various types of MPs. Therefore, the study aimed to identify bacteria with the potential for MP biodegradation and the enzymes produced during the process. Methods: The methodology used followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. Results and Discussion: The research yielded 68 eligible studies, highlighting bacteria from the genera Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Stenotrophomonas, and Rhodococcus as the main organisms involved in MP biodegradation. Additionally, enzymes such as hydrolases and alkane hydroxylases were emphasized for their involvement in this process. Thus, the potential of bacterial biodegradation is emphasized as a promising pathway to mitigate the environmental impact of MPs, highlighting the relevance of identifying bacteria with biotechnological potential for large-scale applications in reducing MP pollution.

The biodegradation of glyphosate by bacteria is an emerging bioremediation strategy necessitated by the intensive use of this herbicide in global agriculture. This study systematically reviews the literature to identify bacteria with the potential to degrade glyphosate. The PRISMA protocol was utilized, considering relevant articles identified in electronic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct. The research identified 34 eligible studies, highlighting the genera Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Ochrobactrum as having the greatest potential for glyphosate degradation. These findings were based on analytical techniques such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), which identified and quantified intermediate metabolites, primarily AMPA (aminomethylphosphonic acid), sarcosine, and glyoxylate. This investigation also addressed enzymatic efficiency in biodegradation, emphasizing enzymes like glyphosate oxidoreductase and C-P lyases. The results indicated that South and North America lead in publications on this topic, with Argentina and the United States being the main contributors, reflecting the intense use of glyphosate in these countries. Additionally, studies in Europe and Asia focused on microbial diversity, exploring various bacterial genera. This investigation revealed that despite the promising microbial potential, there are challenges related to environmental condition variations and the cost of large-scale implementation, indicating that continuous research and process optimization are essential for the effective and sustainable application of this biotechnology.

Rapid, effective, and specific identification of clinical and environmental bacterial pathogens is of major importance for their control. Traditionally, bacteria have been identified by phenotypic methods based on morphological, biochemical, and metabolic properties. While these methods are very useful in clinical practice, they have limitations including a poor ability to differentiate within and between species and time-consuming workflows. Newly developed molecular methods can greatly improve the accuracy of taxonomic characterization, identifying specific strains of medical or environmental importance. However, due to high costs and the need for trained professionals, these methods are not yet routine in diagnostic laboratories. Thus, disseminating knowledge on advances in molecular identification techniques is pivotal to make these methodologies accessible. The objective of this work was to review and discuss current molecular techniques for bacteria identification aiming to track and monitor microbial agents in clinical and environmental samples.

Introduction: In recent years there has been a considerable increase in the use of plastic products for different purposes. Many of the plastics generated are dumped into the environment inappropriately. Therefore, it is possible to find plastic waste in different ecosystems, with the marine environment being one of the most impacted. The objective of this review is to identify the impacts of microplastics on the environment and their impact on human health. Methodology: This work corresponds to a narrative literature review, using articles published from 2017 to 2022. The search for articles was carried out in the following databases: Sciencedirect, Scholar Google and Springer-Verlag, using the descriptors: microplastics, plastic pollution and environmental impact. Result: Plastics discarded in the environment go through different processes, such as environmental and biological stresses synergistically which allow these plastics to be broken down into particles smaller than 5 mm called microplastics. The current scenario of microplastic pollution is in evidence and has been causing concern to researchers around the world, since these pollutants are complex contaminants and have significant toxic effects. Current research proves that prolonged exposure to these particles jeopardizes the survival of marine life and induces serious damage to human health, since they can cause damage to the cell and its genetic material, in addition to providing a surface for the transport of microorganisms. And other chemical compounds. Conclusion: Studies show that microplastics pose potential risks to the marine environment and threaten human health, requiring urgent action to recover and avoid environmental impacts.
