Background: Malignant liver tumor is one of the main causes of human death. In order to help physician better diagnose and make personalized treatment schemes, in clinical practice, it is often necessary to segment and visualize the liver tumor from abdominal computed tomography images. Due to the large number of slices in computed tomography sequence, developing an automatic and reliable segmentation method is very favored by physicians. However, because of the noise existed in the scan sequence and the similar pixel intensity of liver tumors with their surrounding tissues, besides, the size, position and shape of tumors also vary from one patient to another, automatic liver tumor segmentation is still a difficult task. Results: We perform the proposed algorithm to the Liver Tumor Segmentation Challenge dataset and evaluate the segmentation results. Experimental results reveal that the proposed method achieved an average Dice score of 68.4% for tumor segmentation by using the designed network, and ASD, MSD, VOE and RVD improved from 27.8 to 21, 147 to 124, 0.52 to 0.46 and 0.69 to 0.73, respectively after performing adversarial training strategy, which proved the effectiveness of the proposed method. Conclusions: The testing results show that the proposed method achieves improved performance, which corroborated the adversarial training based strategy can achieve more accurate and robustness results on liver tumor segmentation task.

Schizophrenia is a kind of serious mental illness. Due to the lack of an objective physiological data supporting and a unified data analysis method, doctors can only rely on the subjective experience of the data to distinguish normal people and patients, which easily lead to misdiagnosis. In recent years, functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been widely used in clinical diagnosis, it can get the hemoglobin concentration through the variation of optical intensity. Firstly, the prefrontal brain networks were constructed based on oxy-Hb signals from 52-channel fNIRS data of schizophrenia and healthy controls. Then, Complex Brain Network Analysis (CBNA) was used to extract features from the prefrontal brain networks. Finally, a classier based on Support Vector Machine (SVM) is designed and trained to discriminate schizophrenia from healthy controls. We recruited a sample which contains 34 healthy controls and 42 schizophrenia patients to do the one-back memory task. The hemoglobin response was measured in the prefrontal cortex during the task using a 52-channel fNIRS system. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can achieve a satisfactory classification with the accuracy of 85.5%, 92.8% for schizophrenia samples and 76.5% for healthy controls. Also, our results suggested that fNIRS has the potential capacity to be an effective objective biomarker for the diagnosis of schizophrenia. Our results suggested that, using the appropriate classification method, fNIRS has the potential capacity to be an effective objective biomarker for the diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Background: Given the increasing number of people suffering from tinnitus, the accurate categorization of patients with actionable reports is attractive in assisting clinical decision making. However, this process requires experienced physicians and significant human labor. Natural language processing (NLP) has shown great potential in big data analytics of medical texts; yet, its application to domain-specific analysis of radiology reports is limited. Objective: The aim of this study is to propose a novel approach in classifying actionable radiology reports of tinnitus patients using bidirectional encoder representations from transformer BERT-based models and evaluate the benefits of in domain pre-training (IDPT) along with a sequence adaptation strategy. Methods: A total of 5864 temporal bone computed tomography(CT) reports are labeled by two experienced radiologists as follows: (1) normal findings without notable lesions; (2) notable lesions but uncorrelated to tinnitus; and (3) at least one lesion considered as potential cause of tinnitus. We then constructed a framework consisting of deep learning (DL) neural networks and self-supervised BERT models. A tinnitus domain-specific corpus is used to pre-train the BERT model to further improve its embedding weights. In addition, we conducted an experiment to evaluate multiple groups of max sequence length settings in BERT to reduce the excessive quantity of calculations. After a comprehensive comparison of all metrics, we determined the most promising approach through the performance comparison of F1-scores and AUC values. Results: In the first experiment, the BERT finetune model achieved a more promising result (AUC-0.868, F1-0.760) compared with that of the Word2Vec-based models(AUC-0.767, F1-0.733) on validation data. In the second experiment, the BERT in-domain pre-training model (AUC-0.948, F1-0.841) performed significantly better than the BERT based model(AUC-0.868, F1-0.760). Additionally, in the variants of BERT fine-tuning models, Mengzi achieved the highest AUC of 0.878 (F1-0.764). Finally, we found that the BERT max-sequence-length of 128 tokens achieved an AUC of 0.866 (F1-0.736), which is almost equal to the BERT max-sequence-length of 512 tokens (AUC-0.868,F1-0.760).Conclusion: In conclusion, we developed a reliable BERT-based framework for tinnitus diagnosis from Chinese radiology reports, along with a sequence adaptation strategy to reduce computational resources while maintaining accuracy. The findings could provide a reference for NLP development in Chinese radiology reports.

Echocardiography is an essential examination for cardiac disease diagnosis, from which anatomical structures segmentation is the key to assessing various cardiac functions. However, the obscure boundaries and large shape deformations due to cardiac motion make it challenging to accurately identify the anatomical structures in echocardiography, especially for automatic segmentation. In this study, we propose a dual-branch shape-aware network (DSANet) to segment the left ventricle, left atrium, and myocardium from the echocardiography. Specifically, the elaborate dual-branch architecture integrating shape-aware modules boosts the corresponding feature representation and segmentation performance, which guides the model to explore shape priors and anatomical dependence using an anisotropic strip attention mechanism and cross-branch skip connections. Moreover, we develop a boundary-aware rectification module together with a boundary loss to regulate boundary consistency, adaptively rectifying the estimation errors nearby the ambiguous pixels. We evaluate our proposed method on the publicly available and in-house echocardiography dataset. Comparative experiments with other state-of-the-art methods demonstrate the superiority of DSANet, which suggests its potential in advancing echocardiography segmentation.

Water quality guarantee in remote areas necessitates the development of portable, sensitive, fast, cost-effective, and easy-to-use water quality detection methods. The current work reports on a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) integrated with a smartphone app for the simultaneous detection of cross-type water quality parameters including pH, Cu(II), Ni(II), Fe(III), and nitrite. The shapes, baking time, amount, and ratios of reaction reagent mixtures of wax μPAD were optimized to improve the color uniformity and intensity effectively. An easy-to-use smartphone app was established for recording, analyzing, and directly reading the colorimetric signals and target concentrations on μPAD. The results showed that under the optimum conditions, the current analytical platform has reached the detection limits of 0.4, 1.9, 2.9, and 1.1 ppm for nitrite, Cu(II), Ni(II), and Fe(III), respectively, and the liner ranges are 2.3-90 ppm (nitrite), 3.8-400 ppm (Cu(II)), 2.9-1000 ppm (Ni(II)), 2.8-500 ppm (Fe(III)), and 5-9 (pH). The proposed portable smartphone-app integrated μPAD detection system was successfully applied to real industrial wastewater and river water quality monitoring. The proposed method has great potential for field water quality detection.
