With the increase of mining depth and strength, the evolution of bolt axial force is increasingly becoming important for ensuring the reliability and safety of support. To improve the problem of the existing coal mine roadway pressure-monitoring method, whereby it is difficult to continuously monitor the axial force of the bolt over a long period of time, a full rod fiber bragg grating (FBG) force-measuring bolt and system were designed based on the principle of fiber grating sensing. It was found that a trapezoidal groove is a relatively better groove. The linearity between the center wavelength offset of the fiber grating and the axial force was more than 0.99, and the conversion formula between the axial force of the bolt rod and the wavelength change of the fiber grating were obtained. The real-time monitoring revealed that the axial force of the bolt obviously changed before and after compression. The axial force distribution curve can be divided into the stable zone, growth zone, and peak zone. The influence of the roadway abutment pressure was approximately 130 m ahead of the working face, and the peak area was within the 25–35 m range of the advance working face. The axial force of the bolt rod at the end of the anchorage linearly increased with the tail end of the bolt, the axial force of the free segment was the largest, and the overall stress was essentially the same. The application results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the FBG full-length force bolt.

The size and distribution of pores in rocks are closely related to their physical and mechanical properties. It is important to study the structure and distribution of pore size inside the rock to assess the risk of damage to a given rock volume. These characteristics were studied under different pressures, pore diameters, and pore throat size distribution laws using a UTM5540 electronic universal testing machine, magnetic resonance imaging scanning, and low field nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with cyclic loading on yellow sandstone. We found the following. (1) Under 0–10 MPa load, the peaks of the sandstone spectrum move left as load increases, and the porosity of the sandstone decreases. The peak area of the middle relaxation spectrum increases as pressure increases from 10 to 20 MPa, and a peak for the long relaxation time spectrum appears. (2) Under 0–10 MPa load, the spectral peak associated with a large pore moves left and decreases in area as pressure increases. Under 10–20 MPa load, the large-pore spectral peak moves right and increases in area as pressure increases. (3) Under the applied 0–10 MPa load, the porosity of water-saturated sandstone gradually decreases, and the sandstone NMR images darken with increasing load. The porosity of saturated sandstone gradually increases under 10–20 MPa pressure, and its NMR image brightens. (4) The number of small pore throats increases with increasing load, but the number of large- and medium-sized pore throats decreases. From 0 to 15 MPa, crack (>1 micron) abundance decreases, and fractures are generated by compaction under a 20 MPa load. The pore interconnectivity is enhanced, as are the number and size of pores in the sandstone. With continuing increasing pressure, the numbers of pores and penetration of cracks increase, which damages the sandstone.

Time-dependent deformation of coal is a major concern for deep coal mining. When experiencing high stress conditions, the enhanced time-dependent deformation of coal will become a very possible factor to trigger the violent failure of underground openings. For this study, the inner structural variation of an extremely inhomogeneous coal subjected to incremental creep stress has been experimentally investigated by monitoring both the macroscopic deformation and acoustic property. Results show the following: (1) The pronounced inhomogeneity of coal induces considerable irregularities in creep strain data collected during the increase of stress level. These flawed data highlight the shortcomings of conventional strain-time relationship experiments for deciphering the mechanisms that control creep; (2) The mechanical response of samples under creep compression is the result of competition between compaction and cracking. Cracking deteriorates the structure and increases the ultrasonic attenuation, whilst the compaction causes the densification along the axial axis and reduces attenuation; (3) Long-term creep involves multiple structural deformations that alter the internal structure of the coal. This results in fluctuations of the ultrasonic velocities and their dynamic moduli; (4) During uploading phase of short term creep, vertical cracks develop and transform the sample into a structure consisting of separated columns. Further deterioration of the coal increases the possibility of tensile and shear failure of individual columns, which can trigger the violent collapse of an already fragile structure.
