Sustainable agriculture seeks to balance human nutritional needs with the preservation of environmental quality and the economic viability of agricultural systems. Principles of resource conservation, economic resilience, social equity, and competitiveness underpin this approach. Despite its potential to address crucial issues like food security, energy sustainability, and environmental stewardship, sustainable agriculture faces challenges. These include the scalability of its practices, potential economic constraints in the short term, and the need for significant shifts in policy and consumer behavior. A more explicit definition could encapsulate sustainable agriculture as integrating innovative practices that are environmentally benign, economically feasible, and socially equitable. This encompasses practices that reduce water scarcity, combat soil degradation, and address climate change impacts—crucial steps toward a robust and future-proof agricultural system. By acknowledging these challenges and specifying issues like water scarcity, soil health, and climate change, this abstract presents a balanced view of sustainable agriculture’s role in a sustainable future, highlighting its necessity and the urgent need for integrated efforts to overcome its implementation barriers.

This comprehensive article critically analyzes the advanced biotechnological strategies to mitigate plant drought stress. It encompasses an in-depth exploration of the latest developments in plant genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, shedding light on the complex molecular mechanisms that plants employ to combat drought stress. The study also emphasizes the significant advancements in genetic engineering techniques, particularly CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, which have revolutionized the creation of drought-resistant crop varieties. Furthermore, the article explores microbial biotechnology’s pivotal role, such as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and mycorrhizae, in enhancing plant resilience against drought conditions. The integration of these cutting-edge biotechnological interventions with traditional breeding methods is presented as a holistic approach for fortifying crops against drought stress. This integration addresses immediate agricultural needs and contributes significantly to sustainable agriculture, ensuring food security in the face of escalating climate change challenges.

This study comprehensively explored the micropropagation and rooting capabilities of four distinct lavender genotypes, utilizing culture media with and without 2 g/L of activated charcoal. A systematic examination of varying concentrations of BAP for micropropagation and IBA for rooting identified an optimal concentration of 1 mg/L for both BAP and IBA, resulting in excellent outcomes. Following robust root development, the acclimatization of plants to external conditions achieved a 100% survival rate across all genotypes. In addition to the conventional techniques employed, integrating machine learning (ML) methodologies holds promise for further enhancing the efficiency of lavender propagation protocols. Using cutting-edge computational tools, including MLP, RBF, XGBoost, and GP algorithms, our findings were rigorously examined and forecast using three performance measures (RMSE, R2, and MAE). Notably, the comparative evaluation of different machine learning models revealed distinct R2 rates for plant characteristics, with MLP, RBF, XGBoost, and GP demonstrating varying degrees of effectiveness. Future studies may leverage ML models, such as XGBoost, MLP, RBF, and GP, to fine-tune specific variables, including culture media composition and growth regulator treatments. The adaptability and ability of ML techniques to analyze complex biological processes can provide valuable insights into optimizing lavender micropropagation on a broader scale. This collaborative approach, combining traditional in vitro techniques with machine learning, validates the success of current micropropagation and rooting protocols and paves the way for continuous improvement. By embracing ML in lavender propagation studies, researchers can contribute to advancing sustainable and efficient plant propagation techniques, thereby fostering the preservation and exploitation of genetic resources for conservation and agriculture.

In this study, we refine in vitro propagation techniques for Camellia sinensis using a machine learning approach to ascertain the influence of different shooting and rooting conditions on key growth metrics. This was achieved by applying random forest (RF), XGBoost, and multilayer perceptron (MLP) models to dissect the complexities of micropropagation and rooting processes. The research unveiled significant disparities in growth metrics under varying media conditions, underscoring the profound impact of media composition on plant development. The meticulous statistical analysis, employing ANOVA, highlighted statistically significant differences in growth metrics, indicating the critical role of media composition in optimizing growth conditions. Methodologically, the study utilized explants from 2–3-year-old tea plants, which underwent sterilization before being introduced to two distinct culture media for their micropropagation and rooting phases. Statistical analyses were conducted to evaluate the differences in growth outcomes between media, while machine learning models were employed to predict the efficacy of micropropagation and rooting based on various growth regulators. This approach allowed for a comprehensive evaluation of the model’s performance in simulating plant growth under different conditions, leveraging metrics like R2, RMSE, and MAE. The findings from this study significantly advance the understanding of tea plant micropropagation, highlighting the utility of machine learning models in agricultural optimization. This research contributes to enhancing micropropagation strategies for the tea plant and exemplifies the transformative potential of integrating machine learning into plant science, paving the way for improved agricultural and horticultural practices. This interdisciplinary approach offers a novel perspective on optimizing in vitro propagation processes, contributing substantially to plant tissue culture and biotechnology.

This study investigates the influence of cadmium (Cd) stress on the micropropagation of Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum L.) across three distinct genotypes (ERU, NQ1, NQ7), employing an array of machine learning (ML) algorithms, including Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Gaussian Process (GP), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). The primary motivation is to elucidate genotype-specific responses to Cd stress, which poses significant challenges to agricultural productivity and food safety due to its toxicity. By analyzing the impacts of varying Cd concentrations on plant growth parameters such as proliferation, shoot and root lengths, and root numbers, we aim to develop predictive models that can optimize plant growth under adverse conditions. The ML models revealed complex relationships between Cd exposure and plant physiological changes, with MLP and RF models showing remarkable prediction accuracy (R2 values up to 0.98). Our findings contribute to understanding plant responses to heavy metal stress and offer practical applications in mitigating such stress in plants, demonstrating the potential of ML approaches in advancing plant tissue culture research and sustainable agricultural practices.

Aronia melanocarpa (black chokeberry) is a medicinally valuable small fruit species, yet its commercial propagation remains limited by low rooting and genotype-specific responses. This study developed an efficient, callus-free micropropagation and rooting protocol using a Shrub Plant Medium (SPM) supplemented with 5 mg/L BAP in large 660 mL jars, which yielded up to 27 shoots per explant. Optimal rooting (100%) was achieved with 0.5 mg/L NAA + 0.25 mg/L IBA in half-strength SPM. In the second phase, supervised machine learning models, including Random Forest (RF), XGBoost, Gaussian Process (GP), and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), were employed to predict morphogenic traits based on culture conditions. XGBoost and RF outperformed other models, achieving R2 values exceeding 0.95 for key variables such as shoot number and root length. These results demonstrate that data-driven modeling can enhance protocol precision and reduce experimental workload in plant tissue culture. The study also highlights the potential for combining physiological understanding with artificial intelligence to streamline future in vitro applications in woody species.
