Background: Anthurium andraeanum is one of the most popular tropical flowers. In temperate and cold zones, a much greater risk of cold stress occurs in the supply of Anthurium plants. Unlike the freeze-tolerant model plants, Anthurium plants are particularly sensitive to low temperatures. Improvement of chilling tolerance in Anthurium may significantly increase its production and extend its shelf-life. To date, no previous genomic information has been reported in Anthurium plants. Results: Using Illumina sequencing technology, we generated over two billion base of high-quality sequence in Anthurium, and demonstrated de novo assembly and annotation of genes without prior genome information. These reads were assembled into 44,382 unigenes (mean length = 560 bp). Based on similarity search with known protein in the non-redundant (nr) protein database, 27396 unigenes (62%) were functionally annotated with a cut-off E-value of 10-5. Further, DGE tags were mapped to the assembled transcriptome for gene expression analysis under cold stress. In total, 4363 differentially expressed genes were identified. Among these genes, 292, 805 and 708 genes were up-regulated after 1-h, 5-h and 24-h cold treatment, respectively. Then we mapped these cold-induced genes to the KEGG database. Specific enrichment was observed in photosynthesis pathway, metabolic pathways and oxidative phosphorylation pathway in 1-h cold-treated plants. After a 5-h cold treatment, the metabolic pathways and oxidative phosphorylation pathway were significantly identified as the top two pathways. After 24-h cold treatment, mRNA surveillance pathway, RNA transport pathway and plant-pathogen interaction pathway were significantly enriched. Together, a total of 39 cold-inducible transcription factors were identified, including subsets of AP2/ERF, Zinc figure, NAC, MYB and bZIP family members. Conclusion: Our study is the first to provide the transcriptome sequence resource for Anthurium plants, and demonstrate its digital gene expression profiling under cold conditions using the assembled transcriptome data for reference. These data provides a valuable resource for genetic and genomic studies under abiotic conditions for Anthurium plants.

Basil, renowned for its aromatic properties, exhibits commendable drought tolerance and holds significant value as an edible and medicinal plant. Recognizing the scarcity of studies addressing basil’s response to drought stress, we performed physiological experiments and omics analyses of sweet basil across four distinct levels of drought stress. During drought stress, basil showed increased activity of antioxidant enzymes and accumulated more osmoregulatory compounds. Our metabolic analysis meticulously identified a total of 830 metabolites, among which, 215 were differentially accumulated. The differentially accumulated metabolites under drought stress were predominantly esters and terpenes; however, none were identified as the primary volatile compounds of basil. Transcriptome analyses highlighted the pivotal roles of phenylpropanoid and flavonoid biosynthesis and lipid metabolism in fortifying the resistance of sweet basil against drought stress. α-linolenic acid, lignin, flavonoid, and flavonol contents significantly increased under stress; the essential genes involved in the production of these compounds were confirmed through quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), and their variations aligned with the outcomes from sequencing. This holistic approach not only enriches our understanding of the molecular intricacies underpinning basil’s drought resistance but also furnishes valuable insights for the molecular breeding of basil varieties endowed with enhanced drought tolerance.

Bromeliads are of great economic importance in flower production; however little information is available with respect to genetic characterization of cultivated bromeliads thus far. In the present study, a selection of cultivated bromeliads was characterized via inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers with an emphasis on genetic diversity and population structure. Twelve ISSR primers produced 342 bands, of which 287 (~84%) were polymorphic, with polymorphic bands per primer ranging from 17 to 34. The Jaccard’s similarity ranged from 0.08 to 0.89 and averaged ~0.30 for the investigated bromeliads. The Bayesian-based approach, together with the un-weighted paired group method with arithmetic average (UPGMA)-based clustering and the principal coordinate analysis (PCoA), distinctly grouped the bromeliads from Neoregelia, Guzmania, and Vriesea into three separately clusters, well corresponding with their botanical classifications; whereas the bromeliads of Aechmea other than the recently selected hybrids were not well assigned to a cluster. Additionally, ISSR marker was proven efficient for the identification of hybrids and bud sports of cultivated bromeliads. The findings achieved herein will further our knowledge about the genetic variability within cultivated bromeliads and therefore facilitate breeding for new varieties of cultivated bromeliads in future as well.

Temporal comparisons drawn from aggregated occurrence databases assume that the records compared were produced by a comparable community of collectors. We tested that assumption using 297 voucher-backed records of Lycoris radiata, L. aurea, and L. chinensis retrieved from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium, comparing 2010–2015 with 2016–2020. Recorded habitat composition changed; Forest/Woodland fell from 44.9% to 22.3% of coded records and Urban/Residential rose from 8.9% to 20.4% (χ2 = 20.308, df = 6, p = 0.002; permutation p = 0.002; Cramér’s V = 0.279). The contributing institutions and provinces, however, also fluctuated significantly (institution V = 0.550; province V = 0.380; both p < 0.001), and both were themselves strongly associated with recorded habitat. Stratification separated the two components: the Forest/Woodland decline persisted (Mantel–Haenszel χ2 = 8.574, p = 0.003 by province; χ2 = 6.250, p = 0.012 by institution), whereas the Grassland change did not (p = 0.871; p = 0.409). Record totals fell from 189 to 108, which we attribute to digitization lag rather than population change. Before interpreting temporal differences in aggregated occurrence data, researchers should examine changes in contributor composition and use stratified analyses to assess potential confounding.

Basil, renowned for its aromatic properties, exhibits commendable drought tolerance and holds significant value both as an edible and medicinal plant. Recognizing the scarcity of studies addressing basil’s response to drought stress, we undertook a comprehensive analysis of the volatile metabolome and transcriptome of sweet basil across four distinct levels of drought stress. Our metabolic analysis meticulously identified 830 metabolites, with 215 differentially accumulated metabolites discerned. Notably, the primary constituents of sweet basil volatiles exhibited minimal alterations, while the differentially accumulated metabolites were predominantly lipids and terpenes. The transcriptome analysis unveiled 27,181 differentially expressed DEGs, with a predominant focus on metabolic pathways and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Integrating insights from both transcriptome and volatile metabolomic analyses highlighted the pivotal roles of Alpha-linolenic acid, flavonoid, and lignin metabolism in fortifying the resistance of sweet basil against drought stress. This holistic approach not only enriches our understanding of the molecular intricacies underpinning basil’s drought resistance but also furnishes valuable insights for the molecular breeding of basil varieties endowed with enhanced drought tolerance.
