Near surface air temperature (NSAT) is a primary descriptor of terrestrial environmental conditions. In recent decades, many efforts have been made to develop various methods for obtaining spatially continuous NSAT from gauge or station observations. This study compared three spatial interpolation (i.e., Kriging, Spline, and Inversion Distance Weighting (IDW)) and two regression analysis (i.e., Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR)) models for predicting monthly minimum, mean, and maximum NSAT in China, a domain with a large area, complex topography, and highly variable station density. This was conducted for a period of 12 months of 2010. The accuracy of the GWR model is better than the MLR model with an improvement of about 3 °C in the Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), which indicates that the GWR model is more suitable for predicting monthly NSAT than the MLR model over a large scale. For three spatial interpolation models, the RMSEs of the predicted monthly NSAT are greater in the warmer months, and the mean RMSEs of the predicted monthly mean NSAT for 12 months in 2010 are 1.56 °C for the Kriging model, 1.74 °C for the IDW model, and 2.39 °C for the Spline model, respectively. The GWR model is better than the Kriging model in the warmer months, while the Kriging model is superior to the GWR model in the colder months. The total precision of the GWR model is slightly higher than the Kriging model. The assessment result indicated that the higher standard deviation and the lower mean of NSAT from sample data would be associated with a better performance of predicting monthly NSAT using spatial interpolation models.

The single‐channel (SC) algorithm has been widely used to retrieve land surface temperature from Landsat series data for its simplicity and requirement of only one thermal infrared channel. The main error sources of the existing SC algorithms are the linearization of the Planck's function and atmospheric correction. This paper proposed a practical SC (PSC) algorithm to retrieve land surface temperature from Landsat series data aiming at avoiding the aforementioned error sources. The sensitivity of the PSC algorithm to the input parameters was analyzed. The performance of the proposed PSC algorithm was compared with the most commonly used SC algorithm (the generalized SC, GSC) using a simulation data set and satellite measurements. Results showed that the PSC algorithm was less sensitive to uncertainties in the input parameters than the GSC algorithm. When validated with the simulation data set, the root‐mean‐square error (RMSE) of the PSC algorithm was 1.23 K, with an improvement by 0.57 K compared with the GSC algorithm. For the validation with 71 clear‐sky Landsat 8 images, the RMSE of the PSC algorithm was 1.77 K when using the measurements from U.S. surface radiation budget network as real values. Compared with the GSC algorithm, the RMSE improvement for the PSC algorithm was 0.47 K. We conclude that the PSC algorithm is more accurate than the GSC algorithm and the sensitivity to input parameters in the PSC algorithm is weaker than in the GSC algorithm.
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an important means to detect ocean oil spills which cause serious damage to the marine ecosystem. However, the look-alikes, which have a similar behavior to oil slicks in SAR images, will reduce the oil spill detection accuracy. Therefore, a novel oil spill detection method based on multiple features of polarimetric SAR data is proposed to improve the detection accuracy in this paper. In this method, the self-similarity parameter, which is sensitive to the randomness of the scattering target, is introduced to enhance the discrimination ability between oil slicks and look-alikes. The proposed method uses the Random Forest classification combing self-similarity parameter with seven well-known features to improve oil spill detection accuracy. Evaluations and comparisons were conducted with Radarsat-2 and UAVSAR polarimetric SAR datasets, which shows that: (1) the oil spill detection accuracy of the proposed method reaches 92.99% and 82.25% in two datasets, respectively, which is higher than three well-known methods. (2) Compared with other seven polarimetric features, self-similarity parameter has the better oil spill detection capability in the scene with lower wind speed close to 2–3 m/s, while, when the wind speed is close to 9–12 m/s, it is more suitable for oil spill detection in the downwind scene where the microwave incident direction is similar to the sea surface wind direction and performs well in the scene with incidence angle range from 29.7° to 43.5°.
Digital terrain models (DTMs) are considered important basic geographic data. They are widely used in the fields of cartography, land utilization, urban planning, communications, and remote sensing. Digital photogrammetry mainly based on stereo image matching is a frequently applied technique to generate DTMs. Generally, the process of ground filtering should be applied to the point cloud derived from image matching to separate terrain and off-terrain points before DTM generation. However, many of the existing filtering methods perform unsatisfactorily for steep mountainous areas, particularly when residential neighborhoods exist in the proximity of the test areas. In this study, an improved automated filtering method based on progressive TIN (triangulated irregular networks) densification (PTD) is proposed to generate DTMs for steep mountainous areas and adjacent residential areas. Our main improvement on the classic method is the acquisition of seed points with better distribution and reliability to enhance its adaptability to different types of terrain. A rule-based method for detecting ridge points is first applied. The detected points are used as additional seed points. Subsequently, a locally optimized seed point selection method based on confidence interval estimation theory is applied to remove the erroneous points. The experiments on two sets of stereo-matched point clouds indicate that the proposed method performs well for both residential and mountainous areas. The total accuracy values in the form of root-mean-square errors of the generated DTMs by the proposed method are 0.963 and 1.007 m; respectively; which are better than the 1.286 and 1.309 m achieved by the classic PTD method.
As the highest elevation permafrost region in the world, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) permafrost is quickly degrading due to global warming, climate change and human activities. The Qinghai-Tibet Engineering Corridor (QTEC), located in the QTP tundra, is of growing interest due to the increased infrastructure development in the remote QTP area. The ground, including the embankment of permafrost engineering, is prone to instability, primarily due to the seasonal freezing and thawing cycles and increase in human activities. In this study, we used ERS-1 (1997–1999), ENVISAT (2004–2010) and Sentinel-1A (2015–2018) images to assess the ground deformation along QTEC using time-series InSAR. We present a piecewise deformation model including periodic deformation related to seasonal components and interannual linear subsidence trends was presented. Analysis of the ERS-1 result show ground deformation along QTEC ranged from −5 to +5 mm/year during the 1997–1999 observation period. For the ENVISAT and Sentinel-1A results, the estimated deformation rate ranged from −20 to +10 mm/year. Throughout the whole observation period, most of the QTEC appeared to be stable. Significant ground deformation was detected in three sections of the corridor in the Sentinel-1A results. An analysis of the distribution of the thaw slumping region in the Tuotuohe area reveals that ground deformation was associated with the development of thaw slumps in one of the three sections. This research indicates that the InSAR technique could be crucial for monitoring the ground deformation along QTEC.
Drought monitoring ensures the Yangtze River Basin’s social economy and agricultural production. Developing a comprehensive index with high monitoring precision is essential to enhance the accuracy of drought management strategies. This study proposes the standardized comprehensive drought index (SCDI) using a novel approach that utilizes the joint distribution of C-vine copula to effectively combine three critical drought factors: precipitation, NDVI, and runoff. The study analyzes the reliability and effectiveness of the SCDI in detecting drought events through quantitative indicators and assesses its applicability in the Yangtze River Basin. The findings are as follows: (1) The SCDI is a highly reliable and applicable drought index. Compared to traditional indices like the SPI, VCI, and SRI, it has a consistency rate of over 67% and can detect drought events in more sensitive months by over 51%. It has a low false negative rate of only 2% and a false positive rate of 0%, making it highly accurate. The SCDI is also applicable to all the third-level sub-basins of the Yangtze River Basin, making it a valuable tool for regional drought monitoring. (2) The time lag effect of the NDVI can affect the sensitivity of the SCDI. When the NDVI time series data are shifted forward by one month, the sensitivity of the SCDI in detecting agricultural drought improves from 47.8% to 53%. (3) The SDCI can assist in monitoring drought patterns in the Yangtze River Basin. From 2001 to 2018, the basin saw fluctuations in drought intensity, with the worst in December 2008. The western region had less frequent but more intense and prolonged droughts, while the eastern part had more frequent yet less severe droughts.
