In the present study, the unique bimodal grain size distribution microstructure with the ultrafine substrate and embedded macro grains was fabricated by a traditional hot-rolling process in a novel low-cost Ti-2Fe-0.1B titanium alloy, which possesses a good combination of strength (around 663 MPa) and ductility (around 30%) without any post heat treatment. Meanwhile, the mechanical behavior and corrosion resistance of hot-rolled Ti-2Fe-0.1B alloy after equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) deformation were studied. Results indicated that the average grain size decreased to 0.24 μm after 4 passes ECAP deformation, which led to the enhancement of tensile strength to around 854 MPa and good ductility to around 15%. In addition, corrosion resistance was also improved after ECAP due to the rapid self-repairing and thicker passivation film. Our study revealed that the novel low-cost titanium alloy after hot-rolling and ECAP could be used instead of Ti-6Al-4V in some industrial applications due to similar mechanical behavior and better corrosion resistance.

Fe-based amorphous alloys (FAA) have excellent anti-corrosion and anti-abrasive comprehensive performances. However, sprayed thin FAA coatings with high porosity cannot provide efficient protection, or even accelerate the corrosion rate of the substrate due to galvanic corrosion. Laser re-melting densifying is usually used to improve the anti-corrosion performance of sprayed coatings. There are two disadvantages of the common laser re-melting method, including crystallization and residual stress. In the present paper, a low density energy laser re-melting method was used to improve the performance of cold spraying (CS) FeCoCrMoBCY FAA coating on 40Cr substrate. The results show that the CS FAA coatings were crystallized partially during the melting process. The hardness of the coating is improved at the melting zone after laser re-melting, which improves the anti-abrasive performance. Potentiodynamic test results show that laser re-melting can decrease the corrosion rate, but the salt spray test indicates that low energy density re-melting cannot eliminate penetrated diffusion passage. Further optimization should be conducted to improve the anticorrosion performance for this method.

The change of protective current density, the formation and growth of calcareous deposits, and the evolution of passive film on 304 stainless steel (SS) were investigated at different potentials of cathodic polarization in sea water. Potentiostatic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and surface analysis techniques of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the surface conditions. It was found that the protective current density was smaller for keeping polarization at −0.80 V (vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE), same as below) than that at −0.65 V. The calcareous deposits could not be formed on 304 SS with polarization at −0.50 V while it was well protected. The formation rate, the morphology, and the constituent of the calcareous deposits depended on the applied potential. The resistance of passive film on 304 SS decreased at the first stage and then increased when polarized at −0.80 V and −0.65 V, which was related to the reduction and the repair of passive film. For the stainless steel polarized at −0.50 V, the film resistance increased with polarization time, indicating that the growth of oxide film was promoted.

Since thermally sprayed zinc and aluminum coatings were invented 100 years ago, they have realized extensive industrial applications for steel structure protection in a variety of fields for nearly 100 years and have been proven to be effective and reliable. However, it has seldom been reported in the ship industry in China since many workers worry about the risk of rapid corrosion, especially in harsh environments such as the South China Sea. In this paper, three kinds of arc-sprayed zinc aluminum coatings were tested to choose the best coating system for application on the research vessel Yongle by electrochemical behavior and a long-term atmospheric exposure experiment. The variation of the corrosion rate and the bonding strength was used to clarify the long-term protection performance. The results show that Zn15Al has the lowest corrosion (Rp larger than 2200 Ω·cm2) among the three kinds of coatings and has a bonding strength larger than 6.38 MPa after a 5 year test. The performance of the coatings in the South China Sea indicates that they can provide excellent protection for the hull above the waterline of the Yongle vessel in the 3 year test. It could be predicted that thermally sprayed zinc aluminum coating has vast application potential in the South China Sea due to its excellent anticorrosion performance.

In this study, S-doped graphitic carbon nitride (S-C3N4) was prepared using the high-temperature polymerization method, and then S-C3N4/AgCdS heterojunction photocatalyst was obtained using the chemical deposition method through loading Ag-doped CdS nanoparticles (AgCdS NPs) on the surface of S-C3N4. Experimental results show that the AgCdS NPs were evenly dispersed on the surface of S-C3N4, indicating that a good heterojunction structure was formed. Compared to S-C3N4, CdS, AgCdS and S-C3N4/CdS, the photocatalytic performance of S-C3N4/AgCdS has been significantly improved, and exhibits excellent photocatalytic degradation performance of Rhodamine B and methyl orange. The doping of Ag in collaboration with the construction of a Z-scheme heterojunction system promoted the effective separation and transport of the photogenerated carriers in S-C3N4/AgCdS, significantly accelerated its photocatalytic reaction process, and thus improved its photocatalytic performance.
