Accumulating animal studies have demonstrated the harmful contribution of ambient air pollution (AP) to metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), but corresponding epidemiological evidence is limited. We examined the associations between long-term AP exposure and MAFLD prevalence in a Chinese population. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 90,086 participants recruited in China from 2018 to 2019. MAFLD was assessed based on radiologically diagnosed hepatic steatosis and the presence of overweight/obese status, diabetes mellitus, or metabolic dysregulation. Residence-specific levels of air pollutants, including particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters of ≤1 μm (PM1), ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5), and ≤10 μm (PM10), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), were estimated by validated spatiotemporal models. We used logistic regression models to examine the AP-MAFLD associations and further evaluated potential effect modifications by demographics, lifestyle, central obesity, and diabetes status. Increased exposure levels to all 4 air pollutants were significantly associated with increased odds of MAFLD, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.13 (95% CI 1.10-1.17), 1.29 (1.25-1.34), 1.11 (1.09-1.14), and 1.15 (1.12-1.17) for each 10 μg/m3 increase in PM1, PM2.5, PM10, and NO2, respectively. Further stratified analyses revealed that individuals who are male, alcohol drinkers, and current and previous smokers, those who consume a high-fat diet, and those with central obesity experience more significant adverse effects from AP exposure than other individuals. This study provides evidence that long-term exposure to ambient PM1, PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 may increase the odds of MAFLD in the real world. These effects may be exacerbated by unhealthy lifestyle habits and central obesity. We conducted an epidemiological study on the potential effect of ambient air pollution on the risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in approximately 90 thousand adults in China. We found that long-term exposure to ambient air pollution may increase the odds of MAFLD, especially in individuals who are male, smokers, and alcohol drinkers, those who consume a high-fat diet, and those with central obesity.

Objective: To determine the association of physical activity (PA) and sedentary time (ST; leisure and total ST), commuting mode with hyperuricemia in a multiethnic Chinese population, and to analyze the difference between sexes. Methods: Baseline data were analyzed from 22,094 participants from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort study in the Yunnan region, China. PA and sedentary behavior were assessed through questionnaires. Hyperuricemia was defined as serum urate > 7.0 mg/dL among men and > 6.0 mg/dL among women. A restricted cubic spline (RCS) was created to model the possible nonlinear relationship of PA and ST with hyperuricemia. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI.Results: Hyperuricemia prevalence in the observed population was 15.5% (men 25.5%, women 10.7%). Compared to those with light PA, participants with moderate-to-vigorous PA had lower odds of hyperuricemia (adjusted ORs were 0.85 [95% CI 0.77–0.94] and 0.88 [95% CI 0.79–0.97]). However, RCS showed a U-shaped nonlinear relationship between PA and hyperuricemia, and a linear relationship between hyperuricemia prevalence and increasing ST. Total ST ≥ 4 hours/day increased the risk of hyperuricemia in women but not in men. Mode of transportation revealed that sedentary behavior increased the risk of hyperuricemia, but there were inconsistent results based on sex. Conclusion: Moderate PA may be more beneficial in reducing the risk of hyperuricemia. Reducing ST may have a greater effect on preventing hyperuricemia in females than in males.

Health-related quality of life is a multi-dimensional concept that involves individual’s perceived physical and mental health, social relationships, and environment. Family members are the primary caregivers of people living with schizophrenia in China, the quality of life of caregiver of people living with schizophrenia is generally poorer, which may indirectly affect the quality of life of the people with schizophrenia. We conducted a comprehensive survey on quality of life in caregivers of people living with schizophrenia based on the Schizophrenia-specific cohort in the Less-developed Multi-ethnic Region of Southwest China to validate the accessibility and effectiveness of the schizophrenia family care model at the family level, caregivers of people living with schizophrenia were selected as participants in Baoshan City, Yunnan Province from September 2022 to March 2023, quality of life, family burden of disease, sociodemographic and behavioral information of participants were collected. Domain scores for physical, psychological, social relationships, and environment of quality of life were 13.50 ± 2.61, 12.67 ± 2.40, 13.64 ± 2.32, and 12.46 ± 1.76 respectively. In our study, we found that gender, age, education level, personal monthly income, history of smoking and alcohol consumption, subjective sleep quality, relation to the patient, degree of self-care and the number of relapses in patient all influence 1 to 4 domains of quality of life for caregivers, stratified analysis was conducted to minimize the effect of gender on the results, we still found that history of smoking could positively predict the score of psychological domain and history of alcohol consumption could positively predict the score of social relationships domain. Canonical correlation analysis showed that the ‘impact on family interaction’ in family burden of disease was most closely related to quality of life. Building harmonious family relationships can help improve the quality of life for caregivers of People living with schizophrenia.

Context Loss of sleep or disturbance of sleep-wake cycles has been related to metabolic impairments. However, few studies have investigated the association between daily sleep duration and hyperuricemia. Objective We investigated daily sleep duration (daytime napping and nocturnal sleep) with hyperuricemia risk. Methods We cross-sectionally analyzed data from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC), Yunnan region. A total of 22 038 participants aged 30 to 79 years were recruited in 2018. Hyperuricemia was defined as serum uric acid (SUA) above 7.0 mg/dL in men and above 6.0 mg/dL in women. Outcomes were associations between daily sleep duration and hyperuricemia. Results We found that the longest daytime napping duration was associated with a higher risk of hyperuricemia in the crude model (odds ratio [OR] [95% CI], 2.22 [1.88-2.61], P < .001) and in a multivariable adjustment model (OR, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.41-2.01, P < .001) after adjusting for demographic, sleep habits, and metabolic risk factors. The association was moderately attenuated with additionally adjusted for serum creatinine (OR, 1.54; 95% CI, 1.28-1.86, P < .001). Longer daytime napping duration was also related to higher risk of hyperuricemia combined with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Respondents in the group with daytime napping duration greater than or equal to 90 minutes presented with a higher risk of hyperuricemia combined with MetS (OR, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.06-1.79; P < .001) in the fully adjusted model. We did not observe any relation between nocturnal sleep duration and risk of hyperuricemia in the study. Conclusion Longer daytime napping duration (but not nocturnal sleep duration) was independently associated with risk of hyperuricemia in a Chinese population.
