Drought has become one of the major constraints to agricultural development, particularly in areas that lack water. Studying the effects of different water stresses on the photosynthesis, growth, yield, water use efficiency (WUE) and irrigation water productivity (IWP) of winter wheat will provide data for the development of scientific irrigation strategies for water-saving agricultural methods. According to the size of the field water capacity, four different water stress levels were set, i.e., 30–40% (severe stress), 40–50% (moderate stress), 50–60% (mild stress) and 60–80% (well-watered) of field water capacity, controlling the amount of irrigation through an automatic irrigation system. The results showed that the seasonal changes in photosynthetic parameters, such as net photosynthetic rate (Pn), intercellular carbon concentration (Ci), stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration (E), significantly decreased under moderate and severe stress. As a result, the height, biomass and grain size of winter wheat decreased significantly, which led to low WUE and IWP. The Pn of the mild stress group only slightly decreased compared to that of the well-watered group, and was actually higher during the flowering and grain-filling stages, resulting in increases in dry biomass and 1000 grain weight of 2.07% and 1.95%, respectively. Higher WUE and IWP were attributed to higher yields and less water use. Thus, mild stress (60–80% field water capacity) resulted in the optimal use of water resources without a significant reduction in yield in the North China Plain (NCP). Therefore, mild stress can be considered a suitable environment for winter wheat growth in arid areas.

Drought is a major natural hazard that can have devastating impacts on regional agriculture, water resources and the environment. To assess the variability and pattern of drought characteristics in the Huang‐Huai‐Hai (HHH) Plain, the daily Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) is developed based on daily meteorological data in this study. The dailySPEIdata are used, including Annual Total Drought Severity (ATDS), Annual Total Drought Duration (ATDD) and Annual Drought Frequency (ADF), which were calculated from 1981 to 2010 at 28 meteorological stations. We used the indices (ATDS,ATDDandADF), Hovmöller diagrams and the reliable no parameter statistical methods of the Mann–Kendall test to assess the variability and pattern of drought characteristics for the period from 1981 to 2010 in theHHHplain. The results suggested that severe drought occurred in the 1980s, the late 1990s and the early 2000s, severe drought events occurred in 1981, 1986, 1997 and 2002. Decreasing trends for bothATDSandATDDwere found, and the drought situation did not worsen under global warming during the past 30 years, and the drought situation is alleviating in the entireHHHplain. The northeast and southwest regions of theHHHplain have suffered from more severe drought, and the north region is prone to drought. The results of the study can provide a scientific understanding for the adoption of countermeasures of regional defence against drought and also may serve as a reference point for drought hazard vulnerability analysis.

At present, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have been widely used in building extraction from remote sensing imagery (RSI), but there are still some bottlenecks. On the one hand, there are so many parameters in the previous network with complex structure, which will occupy lots of memories and consume much time during training process. On the other hand, low-level features extracted by shallow layers and abstract features extracted by deep layers of artificial neural network cannot be fully fused, which leads to an inaccurate building extraction from RSI. To alleviate these disadvantages, a dense residual neural network (DR-Net) was proposed in this paper. DR-Net uses a deeplabv3+Net encoder/decoder backbone, in combination with densely connected convolution neural network (DCNN) and residual network (ResNet) structure. Compared with deeplabv3+net (containing about 41 million parameters) and BRRNet (containing about 17 million parameters), DR-Net contains about 9 million parameters; So, the number of parameters reduced a lot. The experimental results for both the WHU Building Dataset and Massachusetts Building Dataset, DR-Net show better performance in building extraction than other two state-of-the-art methods. Experiments on WHU building data set showed that Intersection over Union (IoU) increased by 2.4% and F1 score increased by 1.4%; in terms of Massachusetts Building Dataset, IoU increased by 3.8% and F1 score increased by 2.9%.

Rapid building damage assessment following an earthquake is important for humanitarian relief and disaster emergency responses. In February 2023, two magnitude-7.8 earthquakes struck Turkey in quick succession, impacting over 30 major cities across nearly 300 km. A quick and comprehensive understanding of the distribution of building damage is essential for efficiently deploying rescue forces during critical rescue periods. This article presents the training of a two-stage convolutional neural network called BDANet that integrated image features captured before and after the disaster to evaluate the extent of building damage in Islahiye. Based on high-resolution remote sensing data from WorldView2, BDANet used pre-disaster imagery to extract building outlines; the image features before and after the disaster were then combined to conduct building damage assessment. We optimized these results to improve the accuracy of building edges and analyzed the damage to each building, and used population distribution information to estimate the population count and urgency of rescue at different disaster levels. The results indicate that the building area in the Islahiye region was 156.92 ha, with an affected area of 26.60 ha. Severely damaged buildings accounted for 15.67% of the total building area in the affected areas. WorldPop population distribution data indicated approximately 253, 297, and 1,246 people in the collapsed, severely damaged, and lightly damaged areas, respectively. Accuracy verification showed that the BDANet model exhibited good performance in handling high-resolution images and can be used to directly assess building damage and provide rapid information for rescue operations in future disasters using model weights.
