The monthly standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) can be used to monitor and assess drought characteristics with 1-month or longer drought duration. Based on data from 1961 to 2018 at 427 meteorological stations across mainland China, we developed a daily SPEI dataset to overcome the shortcoming of the coarse temporal scale of monthly SPEI. Our dataset not only can be used to identify the start and end dates of drought events, but also can be used to investigate the meteorological, agricultural, hydrological, and socioeconomic droughts with a different timescales. In the present study, the SPEI data with 3-month (about 90 d) timescale were taken as a demonstration example to analyze spatial distribution and temporal changes in drought conditions for mainland China. The SPEI data with a 3-month (about 90 d) timescale showed no obvious intensifying trends in terms of severity, duration, and frequency of drought events from 1961 to 2018. Our drought dataset serves as a unique resource with daily resolution to a variety of research communities including meteorology, geography, and natural hazard studies. The daily SPEI dataset developed is free, open, and publicly available from this study. The dataset with daily SPEI is publicly available via the figshare portal (Wang et al., 2020c), with https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.12568280. Highlights. A multi-scale daily SPEI dataset was developed across mainland China from 1961 to 2018. The daily SPEI dataset can be used to identify the start and end days of the drought event. The developed daily SPEI dataset in this study is free, open, and publicly available.
Drought is a major natural hazard that can have devastating impacts on regional agriculture, water resources and the environment. To assess the variability and pattern of drought characteristics in the Huang‐Huai‐Hai (HHH) Plain, the daily Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) is developed based on daily meteorological data in this study. The dailySPEIdata are used, including Annual Total Drought Severity (ATDS), Annual Total Drought Duration (ATDD) and Annual Drought Frequency (ADF), which were calculated from 1981 to 2010 at 28 meteorological stations. We used the indices (ATDS,ATDDandADF), Hovmöller diagrams and the reliable no parameter statistical methods of the Mann–Kendall test to assess the variability and pattern of drought characteristics for the period from 1981 to 2010 in theHHHplain. The results suggested that severe drought occurred in the 1980s, the late 1990s and the early 2000s, severe drought events occurred in 1981, 1986, 1997 and 2002. Decreasing trends for bothATDSandATDDwere found, and the drought situation did not worsen under global warming during the past 30 years, and the drought situation is alleviating in the entireHHHplain. The northeast and southwest regions of theHHHplain have suffered from more severe drought, and the north region is prone to drought. The results of the study can provide a scientific understanding for the adoption of countermeasures of regional defence against drought and also may serve as a reference point for drought hazard vulnerability analysis.

The future state of drought in China under climate change remains uncertain. This study investigates drought events, focusing on the region of China, using simulations from five global climate models (GCMs) under three Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5) participating in the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP3b). The daily Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) is employed to analyze drought severity, duration, and frequency over three future periods. Evaluation of the GCMs’ simulations against observational data indicates their effectiveness in capturing historical climatic change across China. The rapid increase in CO2 concentration under high-emission scenarios in the mid- and late-future century (2040–2070 and 2071–2100) substantially influences vegetation behavior via regulation on leaf stomata and canopy structure. This regulation decelerates the increase in potential evapotranspiration, thereby mitigating the sharp rise in future drought occurrences in China. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders to develop strategies and measures for mitigating and adapting to future drought conditions in China.
