At present, microgrids (μGs) are a focal point in both academia and industry due to their capability to sustain operations that are stable, resilient, reliable, and of high power quality. Power converters (PCs), a vital component in μGs, enable the decentralization of power generation. However, this decentralization introduces challenges related to power quality. This paper introduces a μG model, based on the IEEE 14-bus distribution system, with the objective of investigating power quality when the μG is operating in conjunction with the conventional power grid. The μG model was developed using MATLAB-Simulink®, a tool specialized for electrical engineering simulations. The results obtained undergo thorough analysis and are compared with the compatibility levels set by the IEEE-519 standard. This method enables a precise evaluation of the μGs’ capacity to maintain acceptable power quality levels while interconnected with the conventional power grid. In conclusion, this study contributes significantly to the field of μGs by providing a detailed and quantitative assessment of power quality. This will assist in the design and optimization of μGs for effective implementation in real-world electric power systems.

Today, and mainly in the academic environment, one of the fields of study that is receiving the most attention, in reference to electrical microgrids (MGs), is precisely how to integrate all the elements of the MGs to maintain a stable operation, resilient, reliable and quality. This can be achieved through power converters, which allow for the decentralization of electricity generation, but on the other hand, create the challenge of power quality. In this paper, a model of an MG based on the IEEE 14Bus distribution network is proposed for power quality studies when the MG operates in grid-connected mode. MG model is developed in the software MATLAB-Simulink and the results obtained are compared with the compatibility levels of the IEEE519 standard.

To mitigate the fast-growing demand of electrical energy, the use of renewable energy resources (RES), e.g., solar and wind, can offer an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution. However, the massive penetration of power converters interfaced RESs in electric power systems introduces power quality issues, such as harmonic distortion and voltage variations. Therefore, these issues may lead to serious problems, such as cable and transformers overheating, harmonic overvoltage, and more related to harmonic resonances. This article quantifies the harmonic distortion produced by different switching techniques used in the back-to-back converter of the DFIG. The different switching techniques implemented are: SPWM, THIPWM and SVPWM. Modeling and simulation of the DFIG is carried out using the commercial software MATLABSimulink. The model is validated with an experimental 3 kW DFIG prototype. Finally, the results obtained from the experimental tests corroborate the correct functioning of the proposed model.

Hybrid Microgrids (HMGs), which consists of distributed renewable generation, energy storage systems, and power electronics devices, are becoming increasingly popular due to their potential for improving the sustainability of electric energy systems. The inclusion of these devices in a microgrid can lead to harmonic distortion issues, which can negatively impact the Power Quality (PQ) of the system. This paper presents a simulation-based analysis of harmonic propagation in a HMG, using a model created in MATLAB/Simulink that includes the most representative devices found in this type of systems. The study investigates harmonic propagation under different scenarios and identifies significant harmonic distortion issues when a wind turbine (WT) is connected to different nodes of the system. The results of this study provide valuable insights into the challenges of harmonic propagation in HMGs and highlight the need for effective strategies to mitigate the impact of harmonic distortion on system performance. The proposed simulation framework provides a valuable tool for designing and optimizing HMGs to mitigate harmonic propagation and improve PQ. The findings highlight the importance of careful modeling and analysis of harmonic propagation in HMGs to ensure their successful operation and long-term sustainability.

Currently, one of the main focuses of attention in academia is microgrids (MGs) and their ability to maintain stable, resilient, reliable and high–power quality operations. A crucial component in MGs is power converters (PC), which facilitate the decentralization of power generation. This decentralization, however, poses challenges in terms of power quality. This paper presents a microgrid model based on the IEEE 14–bus distribution system and aims to investigate the power quality when the MG operates while connected to the conventional power grid. The MG model has been developed using MATLAB–Simulink®, a specialized tool for electrical engineering simulations. The results obtained are subjected to rigorous analysis and compared with the compatibility levels established by the IEEE–519 standard. This approach allows an accurate assessment of the MGs’ ability to maintain power quality at acceptable levels while interconnected to the conventional power grid. Finally, this study provides a valuable contribution to the MGs’ field of microgrids by providing a detailed and quantitative assessment of power quality, which will aid in the design and optimization of MGs’ for effective implementation in real electric power systems.
