Climate change jeopardizes species survival, particularly for endangered species. This risk extends to the endangered Chinese endemic tree Tapiscia sinensis. The factors underpinning T. sinensis’s habitat distribution are poorly understood, and its potential response to future climate scenarios remains unclear. With six shortlisted climate factors and 117 occurrence records, we modeled T. sinensis’s potential distribution across China using the BIOCLIM model. We applied principal component analysis to examine the primary climate factors restricting its geographical range. The findings indicate that T. sinensis’ range is principally located in China’s middle subtropical climatic zone at low–mid altitudes. The principal component analysis identified two critical factors representing temperature and precipitation. Temperature was the most critical factor limiting T. sinensis distribution, especially the effect of temperature seasonality and isothermality. The habitat suitability model generated by BIOCLIM under current climate conditions demonstrated strong concordance between the predicted suitable areas and the present actual distribution range. These results verify that the model can reliably identify habitats conducive to T. sinensis growth and survival. However, under a hypothetical future climate scenario of doubled atmospheric CO2 concentrations for 2100, the model indicates a precipitous reduction and fragmentation in the areas with excellent suitability conditions. This predicted decline highlights the considerable threats posed by climate change to the long-term survival of this endangered species in China. Our habitat modeling yields critical insights that inform the development of science-based strategies and best practices to improve conservation management plans for research, protection, nursery cultivation, and sustainable planting in China. Habitat suitability knowledge could aid introduction and cultivation efforts for T. sinensis globally in places with analogous climates.

Stellaria multipartita sp. nov. (Caryophyllaceae) from Chongqing, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular data. The new species is similar to S. radians by the palmately fimbriate petals with more linear divisions. Different characters are: shape of the leaves (oblong-triangular to ovate-triangular vs. oblong-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate in S. radians), petals (10–12-cleft vs. 5–7-cleft in S. radians), and seeds (with mamillate ornamentation vs. scrobiculate ornamentation in S. radians). A molecular phylogenetic analysis supports the recognition of Chongqing population as a new species for science.

Osmanthus serrulatus Rehder (Oleaceae) is an endemic spring-flowering species in China. It is narrowly distributed in the southwestern Sichuan Basin, and is facing the unprecedented threat of extinction due to problems associated with natural regeneration, habitat fragmentation and persistent and serious human interference. Here, the genetic diversity and population structure of 262 individuals from ten natural populations were analyzed using 18 microsatellites (SSR) markers. In total, 465 alleles were detected across 262 individuals, with a high polymorphic information content (PIC = 0.893). A high level of genetic diversity was inferred from the genetic diversity parameters (He = 0.694, I = 1.492 and PPL = 98.33%). AMOVA showed that a 21.55% genetic variation existed among populations and the mean pairwise Fst (0.215) indicated moderate genetic population differentiation. The ten populations were basically divided into three groups, including two obviously independent groups. Our results indicate that multiple factors were responsible for the complicated genetic relationship and endangered status of O. serrulatus. The concentrated distribution seems to be the key factor causing endangerment, and poor regeneration, human-induced habitat loss and fragmentation seem to be the primary factors in the population decline and further genetic diversity loss. These findings will assist in future conservation management and the scientific breeding of O. serrulatus.

The Wuyi Mountains in China are one of the largest and most complete subtropical forest ecosystems at the same latitude in the world. However, our limited understanding of the function of this distinctive ecosystem means that the interrelationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning needs to be investigated if evergreen broadleaf forests (EBLFs) are to be protected. Here, we calculated species richness, the Shannon–Wiener index, and the Pielou index in large-, medium-, and small-scale (20 m × 20 m, 10 m × 10 m, and 5 m × 5 m) forest dynamics plots (FDPs). We also investigated the interrelationships between species diversity and aboveground biomass (AGB)/productivity in FDPs at the different scales using the generalized linear regression model. The results showed that species diversity and AGB positively interrelated with each other, whereas there was no species diversity-productivity interrelationship in the subtropical BLF on the Wuyi Mountains. The structural equation model (SEM) showed that elevation was a key factor directly affecting AGB. These findings lead to the conclusion that productivity is not solely correlated with species diversity and that abiotic factors probably mediate the positive interrelationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning. This study provides theoretical basis that can be used to protect EBLFs in subtropical areas and the results can be used to improve the construction of artificial forest communities and vegetation restoration at the same latitude.

Carotenoids are important natural pigments that are responsible for the fruit and flower colors of many plants. The composition and content of carotenoid can greatly influence the color phenotype of plants. However, the regulatory mechanism underling the divergent behaviors of carotenoid accumulation, especially in flower, remains unclear. In this study, a new cultivar Osmanthus fragrans ‘Yanzhi Hong’ was used to study the regulation of carotenoid pigmentation in flower. Liquid chromatograph–mass spectrometer (LC-MS) analysis showed that β-carotene, phytoene, lycopene, γ-carotene, and lutein were the top five pigments enriched in the petals of ‘Yanzhi Hong’. Through transcriptome analysis, we found that the expression of the structural genes in carotenoid pathway was imbalanced: most of the structural genes responsible for lycopene biosynthesis were highly expressed throughout the flower developmental stages, while those for lycopene metabolism kept at a relatively lower level. The downregulation of LYCE, especially at the late developmental stages, suppressed the conversion from lycopene to α-carotene but promoted the accumulation of β-carotene, which had great effect on the carotenoid composition of ‘Yanzhi Hong’. Ethylene response factor (ERF), WRKY, basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH), v-myb avian myeloblastosis viral oncogene homolog (MYB), N-Acetylcysteine (NAC), auxin response factor (ARF), and other transcription factors (TFs) have participated in the flower color regulation of ‘Yanzhi Hong’, which formed co-expression networks with the structural genes and functioned in multiple links of the carotenoid pathway. The results suggested that the cyclization of lycopene is a key link in determining flower color. The modification of the related TFs will break the expression balance between the upstream and downstream genes and greatly influence the carotenoid profile in flowers, which can be further used for creating colorful plant germplasms.
