Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are a prevalent complication during pregnancy with significant implications for maternal and perinatal health globally. Maternal obesity is a known risk factor for HDP. This review sought to identify adiposity indicators in early pregnancy that are linked to the development of HDP. We conducted a systematic search of the PubMed, Science Citation Index (Web of Science), and Embase databases. Screening and quality evaluation of studies was conducted independently by two reviewers. Both random effects meta-analysis and narrative synthesis were performed. Thirty-one studies were included with a pooled sample of 81,311 women. The meta-analysis showed that the odds of HDP were significantly increased by higher pregnancy measures of adiposity (pre-pregnancy body mass index (OR = 2.14, 95%CI: 1.67–2.75), visceral adipose tissue (OR = 1.79, 95%CI: 1.01–3.16), subcutaneous adiposity thickness (OR = 1.67, 95%CI: 1.36–2.05), waist circumference (OR = 2.20, 95%CI: 1.37–3.54), waist to-hip ratio (OR = 3.08, 95% CI: 1.38–6.87), weight gain (OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.42–2.02) and percentage body fat (OR = 1.71, 95%CI: 1.16–2.53)). Epicardial fat thickness was significantly associated with HDP, although limited data were available. The results of our study highlight the importance of investigating the predictive value of adiposity measures in identifying the risk of HDP to tailor care towards women at the highest risk.

Background: Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is a common inherited red blood cell membrane disorder characterized by an abnormal increase of spherocytes in peripheral blood. SPTB gene mutation is one of the most common causes of HS; however, few cases of HS resulting from SPTB mutation in the Chinese population have been reported so far. Case presentation: A 3-year-old Chinese girl presented to Qingdao Women and Children’s Hospital, Qingdao University, with atrial septal defect (ASD). Meanwhile, she was clinically diagnosed with HS. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was performed for the proband and her parents for genetic molecular analysis. A novel SPTB mutation (c.1756delG) was detected by WGS and confirmed by Sanger sequencing in the proband. This mutation results in a frameshift with a premature termination codon in exon 12, leading to a nonsense mutation (p.Ala586Profs*7). Her parents had no similar symptoms, and blood routine and serum biochemical tests showed no significant abnormalities. The patient’s mother did not know of any relatives with HS-like symptoms. Percutaneous transcatheter closure was successfully performed for treating the ASD. Conclusion: In this study, we identified a novel SPTB frameshift mutation in a Chinese girl with HS. This finding would expand the spectrum of SPTB mutations, provide a valuable insight into the genotyping of HS in the Chinese population, and contribute to the clinical management and genetic counseling in HS.

Advanced medical materials and manufacturing technologies are highly in demand in artificial bones. Herein, a four-arm star-shaped polycaprolactone polyurethane acrylate (FPCLA) was designed and synthesized. The photosensitive character of FPCLA contributed to the rapid prototyping and personalized customization under digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology. The FPCLA was prepared by introducing unsaturated double bonds into polycaprolactone tetraethyl alcohol (PCLT). We characterized the physico-chemical properties of the material through FTIR, H-NMR, GPC, DSC and SEM. Cell behaviors on material were observed in vitro. In addition, we employed a DLP 3D printer to evaluate the feasibility of FPCLA to fabricate artificial bone model. The photocuring star polycaprolactone was confirmed in detail by detection method. SEM analyses demonstrated that FPCLA has good tenacity. The material can be used to fabricated artificial bone with a diameter of 3.02 mm at its narrowest by DLP 3D printing technology. The cell survival rates of CCK-8 and Live/Dead fluorescence staining experiments were both above 90%, which indicated safety and feasibility of such new-generation artificial bone made of synthetic polymers.
