The linear parameter-varying (LPV) model is widely used in aero engine control system design. The conventional local modeling method is inaccurate and inefficient in the full flying envelope. Hence, a novel online data-driven LPV modeling method based on the online sequential extreme learning machine (OS-ELM) with an additional multiplying layer (MLOS-ELM) was proposed. An extra multiplying layer was inserted between the hidden layer and the output layer, where the hidden layer outputs were multiplied by the input variables and state variables of the LPV model. Additionally, the input layer was set to the LPV model’s scheduling parameter. With the multiplying layer added, the state space equation matrices of the LPV model could be easily calculated using online gathered data. Simulation results showed that the outputs of the MLOS-ELM matched that of the component level model of a turbo-shaft engine precisely. The maximum approximation error was less than 0.18%. The predictive outputs of the proposed online data-driven LPV model after five samples also matched that of the component level model well, and the maximum predictive error within a large flight envelope was less than 1.1% with measurement noise considered. Thus, the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method were validated.

Mode transition is an important dynamic process of an adaptive cycle engine (ACE). In order to obtain a smooth mode transition process, the closed-loop controller is designed based on the strong robust augmented linear quadric regulator (ALQR) method, and with the objective of minimizing the thrust fluctuation in the process of mode transition, an open-loop geometrical mechanism control schedules optimization method based on Bézier curves is proposed, so that the closed-loop control and the open-loop control can work in coordination. The simulation results at the subsonic cruise operating point and supersonic cruise operating point show that based on the optimized open-loop geometrical mechanism control schedules and the designed closed-loop ALQR control system, the ACE achieves fast and smooth geometrical mechanisms and engine output transition during the mode transition process with a maximum thrust fluctuation of 2.58%, which is much smaller than that of the traditional linear variation geometric mechanisms with a maximum 4.64% thrust fluctuation, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Achieving measurable and unmeasurable parameter prediction is the key process in model-based control, for which an accurate onboard model is the most important part. However, neither nonlinear models like component level models or LPV models, nor linear models like state–space models can fully meet the requirements. Hence, an original ENN-LPV linearization strategy is proposed to achieve the online modelling of the state–space model. A special network structure that has the same format as the state–space model’s calculation was applied to establish the state–space model. Importantly, the network’s modelling ability was improved through applying multiple activation functions in the single hidden layer and an experience pool that records data of past sampling instants, which strengthens the ability to capture the engine’s strongly nonlinear dynamics. Furthermore, an adaptive model, consisting of a component-level model with adaptive factors, a linear Kalman filter, a predictive model, an experience pool, and two ENN-LPV networks, was developed using the proposed linearization strategy as the core process to continuously update the Kalman filter and the predictive model. Simulations showed that the state space model built using the ENN-LPV linearization strategy had a better model identification ability in comparison with the model built using the OSELM-LPV linearization strategy, and the maximum output error between the ENN-LPV model and the simulated engine was 0.1774%. In addition, based on the ENN-LPV linearization strategy, the adaptive model was able to make accurate predictions of unmeasurable performance parameters such as thrust and high-pressure turbine inlet temperature, with a maximum prediction error within 0.5%. Thus, the effectiveness and the advantages of the proposed method are demonstrated.
