Large-scale energy storage systems (ESS) are nowadays growing in popularity due to the increase in the energy production by renewable energy sources, which in general have a random intermittent nature. Currently, several redox flow batteries have been presented as an alternative of the classical ESS; the scalability, design flexibility and long life cycle of the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) have made it to stand out. In a VRFB cell, which consists of two electrodes and an ion exchange membrane, the electrolyte flows through the electrodes where the electrochemical reactions take place. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are a very powerful tool to develop feasible numerical models to enhance the performance and lifetime of VRFBs. This review aims to present and discuss the numerical models developed in this field and, particularly, to analyze different types of flow fields and patterns that can be found in the literature. The numerical studies presented in this review are a helpful tool to evaluate several key parameters important to optimize the energy systems based on redox flow technologies.
The growth in size and weight of wind turbines over the last years has led to the development of flow control devices, such as Gurney flaps (GFs). In the current work, a parametric study is presented to find the optimal GF length to improve the airfoil aerodynamic performance. Therefore, the influence of GF lengths from 0.25% to 3% of the airfoil chord c on a widely used DU91W(2)250 airfoil has been investigated by means of RANS based numerical simulations at Re = 2 × 106. The numerical results showed that, for positive angles of attack, highest values of the lift-to-drag ratio CL/CD are obtained with GF lengths between 0.25% c and 0.75% c. Particularly, an increase of 21.57 in CL/CD ratio has been obtained with a GF length of 0.5% c at 2° of angle of attack AoA. The influence of GFs decreased at AoAs larger than 5°, where only a GF length of 0.25% c provides a slight improvement in terms of CL/CD ratio enhancement. Additionally, an ANN has been developed to predict the aerodynamic efficiency of the airfoil in terms of CL/CD ratio. This tool allows to obtain an accurate prediction model of the aerodynamic behavior of the airfoil with GFs.
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has altered the lives of everyone on a global scale due to its high transmission rate. In the current work, the droplet dispersion and evaporation originated by a cough at different velocities is studied. A multiphase computational fluid dynamic model based on fully coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian techniques was used. The evaporation, breakup, mass transfer, phase change, and turbulent dispersion forces of droplets were taken into account. A computational domain imitating an elevator that with two individuals inside was modeled. The results showed that all droplets smaller than 150 μm evaporate before 10 s at different heights. Smaller droplets of <30 µm evaporate quickly, and their trajectories are governed by Brownian movements. Instead, the trajectories of medium-sized droplets (30–80 µm) are under the influence of inertial forces, while bigger droplets move according to inertial and gravitational forces. Smaller droplets are located in the top positions, while larger (i.e., heaviest) droplets are located at the bottom.
Over the past few years, it has been established that vibration energy harvesters with intentionally designed components can be used for frequency bandwidth enhancement under excitation for sufficiently high vibration amplitudes. Pipelines are often necessary means of transporting important resources such as water, gas, and oil. A self-powered wireless sensor network could be a sustainable alternative for in-pipe monitoring applications. A new control algorithm has been developed and implemented into an underwater energy harvester. Firstly, a computational study of a piezoelectric energy harvester for underwater applications has been studied for using the kinetic energy of water flow at four different Reynolds numbers Re = 3000, 6000, 9000, and 12,000. The device consists of a piezoelectric beam assembled to an oscillating cylinder inside the water of pipes from 2 to 5 inches in diameter. Therefore, unsteady simulations have been performed to study the dynamic forces under different water speeds. Secondly, a new control law strategy based on the computational results has been developed to extract as much energy as possible from the energy harvester. The results show that the harvester can efficiently extract the power from the kinetic energy of the fluid. The maximum power output is 996.25 µW and corresponds to the case with Re = 12,000.
The industry is changing in order to improve the economy sector. This is the reason why technology is improving and developing new devices. The autonomous guided vehicle with free navigation is a new machine, which uses different techniques to move such as mapping, localization, path planning, and path following. In this paper, a path following is proposed. The path following is called moving to a point, which uses the proportional distance between the target and the autonomous guided vehicles (AGV) to calculate the velocity and direction. If some obstacles appear in the trajectory, however, the vehicle stops. Instead of stopping the machine, by using moving to a point logic, an obstacle avoidance function will be implemented. In this implementation, different parameters can be configured, such as: security distance, which determinates when the obstacle avoidance must correct the pose; and proportional values, which modify the velocity and steering commands. It is also compared to a dynamic window approach (DWA) obstacle avoidance solution. Additionally, the AGV navigates to a non-static target with a path following algorithm.
