The effects of two types of flow control devices, vortex generators (VGs) and Gurney flaps (GFs), on the power output performance of a multi-megawatt horizontal axis wind turbine is presented. To that end, an improved blade element momentum (BEM)-based solver has been developed and BEM-based computations have been carried out on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) 5 MW baseline wind turbine. The results obtained from the clean wind turbine are compared with the ones obtained from the wind turbine equipped with the flow control devices. A significant increase in the average wind turbine power output has been found for all of the flow control device configurations and for the wind speed realizations studied in the present work. Furthermore, a best configuration case is proposed which has the largest increase of the average power output. In that case, increments on the average power output of 10.4% and 3.5% have been found at two different wind speed realizations. The thrust force and bending moment in the root of the blade have also been determined and compared with the values of the clean wind turbine. A residual increase in the bending moment of less than 1% has been found.

The industry is changing in order to improve the economy sector. This is the reason why technology is improving and developing new devices. The autonomous guided vehicle with free navigation is a new machine, which uses different techniques to move such as mapping, localization, path planning, and path following. In this paper, a path following is proposed. The path following is called moving to a point, which uses the proportional distance between the target and the autonomous guided vehicles (AGV) to calculate the velocity and direction. If some obstacles appear in the trajectory, however, the vehicle stops. Instead of stopping the machine, by using moving to a point logic, an obstacle avoidance function will be implemented. In this implementation, different parameters can be configured, such as: security distance, which determinates when the obstacle avoidance must correct the pose; and proportional values, which modify the velocity and steering commands. It is also compared to a dynamic window approach (DWA) obstacle avoidance solution. Additionally, the AGV navigates to a non-static target with a path following algorithm.

A material based on recycled rubber has been developed to use as a protective coating on road barriers with the aim of improving motorcyclists' security against crash impacts. This material is based on grounded rubber from used tires added by extrusion using low-density polyethylene as adhesive. Compression tests have been performed for different densities of the recycled material to fully describe the mechanical characteristics under high strain rates (in the rank 0.057–5.7 s−1), and a constitutive model composed of a hyperelastic Mooney Rivlin part and a viscoelastic part based on the generalized Maxwell model has been taken to characterize this behavior. Hyperelastic parameters have been obtained by means of the least-squares fitting technique, and particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been used to obtain viscoelastic parameters. The PSO algorithm is shown to be a good optimization method, simple, versatile, and consisting of few parameters that accelerate to the optimal solution. Therefore, this article presents a new and efficient approach to obtaining the parameters for the viscoelastic model. The behavior of the experimental material confirms the theoretically obtained results, so the procedure presented in the article is validated successfully.

This research proposes an optimal robotic arm speed shape in neurological surgery to minimise a cost functional that uses an adaptive scheme to determine the brain tissue force. Until now, there have been no studies or theories on the shape of the robotic arm speed in such a context. The authors have applied a robotic arm with optimal speed control in neurological surgery. The results of this research are as follows: In this article, the authors propose a control scheme that minimises a cost functional which depends on the position error, trajectory speed and brain tissue force. This work allowed us to achieve an optimal speed shape or trajectory to reduce brain retraction damage during surgery. The authors have reached two main conclusions. The first is that optimal control techniques are very well suited for robotic control of neurological surgery. The second conclusion is that several studies on functional cost parameters are needed to achieve the best trajectory speed of the robotic arm. These studies could attempt to optimise the functional cost parameters and provide a mechanical characterisation of brain tissue based on real data.
