The average software company spends a huge amount of its revenue on R&D for how to deliver software on time. Accurate software effort estimation is critical for successful project planning, resource allocation, and on-time delivery within budget for sustainable software development. However, both overestimation and underestimation pose significant challenges in software development, necessitating continuous improvement in estimation techniques. This study reviews recent machine learning approaches exploited to enhance software effort estimation (SEE) accuracy, focusing on research published between 2020 and 2023. The literature review employed an approach to identify pertinent research on machine learning techniques for software estimation efforts. Additionally, comparative experiments were conducted employing five commonly used ML methods: K-Nearest Neighbor, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, Logistic Regression, and LASSO Regression. These techniques were assessed using five widely employed accuracy metrics such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Mean Magnitude of Relative Error (MMRE), R-squared, Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) on seven benchmark datasets (Albrecht, Desharnais, China, Kemerer, Mayazaki94, Maxwell, COCOMO). By carefully reviewing study quality, analyzing results across the literature, and rigorously evaluating experimental outcomes, clear conclusions were drawn about the most promising techniques for achieving state-of-the-art accuracy in estimating software effort. This study makes three key contributions to the field: firstly, it furnishes a thorough overview of recent machine learning research in software effort estimation (SEE); secondly, it provides data-driven guidance for researchers and practitioners to select optimal methods for accurate effort estimation; and thirdly, it demonstrates the performance of publicly available datasets through experimental analysis. Enhanced estimation supports the development of better predictive models for software project time, cost, and staffing needs. The findings aim to focus future research directions and tool development toward the most accurate machine learning approaches for modeling software development effort, costs, and delivery schedules.

In today’s modern society, social media has seamlessly integrated into our daily routines, providing a platform for individuals to express their opinions and emotions openly on the internet. Within this digital domain, sentiment analysis (SA) is a vital tool to understand the emotions conveyed in written text, whether positive, negative, or neutral. However, SA faces challenges such as dealing with diverse language, uneven data, and understanding complex sentences. This study proposes an effective approach for SA. For this, we introduce a hybrid architecture named DistilRoBiLSTMFuse, designed to extract deep contextual information from complex sentences and accurately identify sentiments. In this research, we evaluate our model’s performance using two popular benchmark datasets: IMDb and Twitter USAirline sentiment. The raw text data are preprocessed, and this involves several steps, including: (1) implementing a comprehensive data cleaning protocol to remove noise and unnecessary information from the raw text, (2) preparing a custom list of stopwords to retain essential words while omitting common, non-informative words, and (3) applying Lemmatization to achieve consistency in text by reducing words to their base forms, enhancing the accuracy of text analysis. To address class imbalance, this study utilized oversampling, augmenting minority class samples to match the majority, thereby ensuring uniform representation across all categories. Considering the variability in preprocessing techniques across previous studies, our research initially explores the efficacy of seven distinct machine learning (ML) models paired with two commonly employed feature transformation methods: term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) and bag of words (BoW). This approach allows for determining which combination yields optimal performance within these ML frameworks. In our study, the DistilRoBiLSTMFuse model is evaluated on two distinct datasets and consistently delivers outstanding performance, surpassing existing state-of-the-art approaches in each case. On the IMDb dataset, our model achieves 98.91% accuracy in training, 94.16% in validation, and 93.97% in testing. The Twitter USAirline Sentiment dataset reaches 99.42% accuracy in training, 98.52% in validation, and 98.33% in testing. The experimental results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of our hybrid DistilRoBiLSTMFuse model in SA tasks. The code for this experimental analysis is publicly available and can be accessed via the following DOI: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13255008.

Medical Named Entity Recognition (MedNER) is an indispensable task in biomedical text mining. NER aims to recognize and categorize named entities in scientific literature, such as genes, proteins, diseases, and medications. This work is difficult due to the complexity of scientific language and the abundance of available material in the biomedical sector. Using domain-specific embedding and Bi-LSTM, we propose a novel NER model that employs deep learning approaches to improve the performance of NER on scientific publications. Our model gets 98% F1-score on a curated data-set of Covid-related scientific publications published in multiple web of science and pubmed indexed journals, significantly outperforming previous approaches deployed on the same data-set. Our findings illustrate the efficacy of our approach in reliably recognizing and classifying named entities (drug and disease) in scientific literature, opening the way for future developments in biomedical text mining.

The process of software testing is of utmost importance and requires a major allocation of resources. It has a substantial influence on the quality and dependability of software products. Nevertheless, as the quantity of test cases escalates, the feasibility of executing all of them diminishes, and the accompanying expenses related to preparation, execution time, and upkeep grow excessively exorbitant. The objective of Test Redundancy Reduction (TRR) is to mitigate this issue by determining a minimal subset of the test suite that satisfies all the requirements of the primary test suite while lowering the number of test cases. In order to attain this objective, multiple methodologies have been suggested, encompassing heuristics, meta-heuristics, exact algorithms, hybrid approaches, and machine-learning techniques. This work provides a thorough examination of prior research on TRR, addressing deficiencies and making a valuable contribution to the current scholarly understanding. The literature study encompasses a comprehensive examination of the complete chronology of TRR, incorporating all pertinent scholarly articles and practitioner-authored research papers published in English. This study aims to provide managers with valuable insights into the strengths and shortcomings of different TRR methodologies, enabling them to make well-informed decisions regarding the most appropriate approach for their specific needs. The primary objective of this study is to offer a comprehensive analysis of Test Result Reduction (TRR) and its consequential impact on mitigating expenses related to software testing. This study makes a valuable contribution to extant literature by elucidating the present state-of-the-art and delineating potential avenues for future research.

Finding the optimal solution out of all reasonable solutions is the goal of an optimization problem. Numerous metaheuristic algorithms have been created in the literature during the past 30 years. It is essential to assess each algorithm's performance using broad case studies in order to assist engineers in selecting the optimal metaheuristic algorithm for the given problem. In this research, we give a comparative analysis of four metaheuristic algorithms used to solve the test redundancy reduction problem: the teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO), the jaya algorithm (JA), the sine-cosine algorithm (SCA), and the sparrow-search algorithm (SSA). To achieve statistical significance, the evaluation of these algorithms' performance is carried out by running every algorithm thirty times. Finding a minimal subset of the test suite that satisfies the specified test criteria is the aim of test redundancy reduction. It was discovered that, in terms of average reduction rate and runtime effectiveness, the SSA is the more efficient metaheuristic algorithm for the test redundancy reduction problem among all the competing metaheuristic algorithms.
