The growing global demand for minerals and metals, coupled with fluctuations in pricing and market disruptions, has emphasised the critical role of these resources in sustaining the global economy. Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) has emerged as a promising source of raw materials, particularly for metal recycling and the valorisation of plastic fractions. In 2022, approximately 62 million metric tons of e-waste were generated worldwide, with projections indicating a rise to 74 million metric tons by 2030. Despite the significant volume of WEEE, only 17.4% was collected and recycled, which reveals a considerable opportunity for resource recovery. This review highlights the composition of metals in WEEE, which includes valuable precious metals, such as gold, silver, and palladium, alongside base metals, such as copper and aluminium. The review also discusses current methodologies for metal recovery and focuses on mechanical size-reduction techniques and various physical separation methods, including a shaking table, magnetic, electrostatic, and eddy current separation, flotation, and the use of a hydrocyclone. These technologies play a vital role in enhancing recovery efficiencies, thereby contributing to sustainable practices in the recycling industry. Thus, the works evaluated in this paper reveal the possibility of recovering more than 90 wt.% of precious (Ag, Au, Pd, Pt) and main metals (Cu, Sn, Al, Fe, Ni) by a combination of these mechanical size-reduction and physical separation methods.

The evolution of lipid damage in anchovy (Engraulis encrasicholus) muscle was studied under different storage conditions. Fresh anchovy was exposed to salt (S condition), ice (I condition) and salt-ice (IS condition), kept in a refrigerated room (4 ºC), and analyzed at days 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 of storage. A strong hydrolysis development could be assessed for all storage conditions, although a partial hydrolysis inhibition (p < 0.05) could be attained as a result of the presence of salt (S and IS conditions). In contrast, a lower (p < 0.05) primary lipid oxidation compound formation could be observed for individuals kept under I conditions. This conclusion was confirmed by the interaction compound formation study (fluorescence and browning developments) between oxidized lipids and protein-type molecules. Accordingly, a higher lipid oxidation was inferred as a result of NaCl addition to fish (S and IS conditions).

The use of slurry ice was evaluated as a technological treatment prior to cooking processing of fish. Thus, sardine (Sardina pilchardus) was stored in slurry ice for 2, 5 and 8 days. At such times, sardine specimens were taken and subjected to steam cooking, and the results were compared with those from a parallel control batch previously stored in flake ice. Quality assessment of lipid damage in cooked fish was performed by measuring the formation of free fatty acids, peroxides, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and interaction compounds. The volatile amines–total and trimethylamine–assessment was also carried out. A significant (p<0.05) inhibition of lipid damage–peroxides and fluorescent compounds assessment–and trimethylamine formation was observed in cooked sardine as a consequence of the preliminary treatment in slurry ice. This work opens the way to the use of slurry ice as a preliminary treatment of fish material prior to its thermal processing.

This study examined how pH hydrolysis affects the recovery process for antimony extracted from spent electrolytes. Various OH− reagents were used to adjust the pH levels. The findings reveal that pH plays a crucial role in determining the optimal conditions for extracting antimony. The results show that NH4OH and NaOH are more effective compared to water, with optimal conditions at pH 0.5 for water and pH 1 for NH4OH and NaOH, resulting in average antimony extraction yields of 90.4%, 96.1%, and 96.7%, respectively. Furthermore, this approach helps to improve both crystallography and purity related to recovered antimony samples obtained through recycling processes. The solid precipitates obtained lack a crystalline structure, making it difficult to identify the compounds formed, but element concentrations suggest the presence of oxychloride or oxide compounds. Arsenic is incorporated into all solids, affecting the purity of the product, and water showing higher antimony content (68.38%) and lower arsenic values (8%) compared to NaOH and NH4OH. Bismuth integration into solids is less than arsenic (less than 2%) and remains unaffected by pH levels except in tests with water, where a bismuth hydrolysis product is identified at pH 1, accounting for the observed reduction in antimony extraction yields.

In this work, powders of cemented ultrafine WC-6 wt.% Co were consolidated. The feasibility of the medium frequency electrical resistance sintering (MF-ERS) technique were studied to prevent WC grain growth during consolidation. Porosity and hardness were measured at different zones of the MF-ERS compacts. The compacts showed a slight inhomogeneity in their properties across their section, but it was controlled by choosing suitable values of the processing parameters. The optimal values for the material studied were current intensities between 7 and 8 kA and sintering times between 600 and 800 ms. The main achievement using this consolidation method was that sintered compacts essentially maintained the initial WC grain size. This was attained to processing times of less than 2 s, and without the need for using protective atmospheres.

This review article examines the corrosion phenomena and mitigation strategies associated with molten salts used in thermal energy storage (TES) and heat transfer applications. Corrosion presents a critical challenge in concentrated solar power (CSP) plants and other high-temperature systems, affecting the durability and cost-efficiency of materials in storage tanks, heat exchangers, and piping. This study offers a comprehensive comparison of corrosion test methods and results, analyzing factors such as operating conditions, salt compositions, and material properties. Emphasis is also placed on strategies such as molten salt purification, the addition of corrosion inhibitors, and the application of protective coatings. This review aims to advance research and development in the TES sector by highlighting knowledge gaps and proposing directions for future experimentation.
