This article examines and calculates the annual flows of rivers in the Buktyrma River basin in connection with changing climatic conditions affecting runoff formation. An analysis of climatic characteristics, based on data from meteorological stations of the hydrometeorological service of Kazakhstan, indicates intense warming and a moderate increase in annual precipitation since the early 1980s. The more intense melting of high-mountain snow and glaciers has led to a reduction in glaciated areas. Alongside the noted trend of increasing precipitation, this melting contributes to an increase in surface runoff. According to Global Land Ice Measurements from Space data, there has been a reduction in the area of glaciers in the river basin and a complete disappearance of glaciers in the Sarymsakty River basin. Studying long-term water-flow data in the basin has helped identify periods with consistent patterns. These periods are characterized by different values of probability-distribution-curve parameters. An assessment of the homogeneity of the identified periods of runoff series over the past decades, using known parametric criteria, confirmed the reliability of the calculated values of annual runoff. The observed increase in the norm, depending on elevation, glacier presence, and the spatial orientation of watershed ridges, ranges from 5% to 52%. The observed trends in changes in climatic characteristics and runoff indicators of the rivers in the basin support water-management planning in this region. This includes using the approximation of empirical river-supply curves, which can aid in assessing the calculated hydrological characteristics.

The Caspian Sea, a crucial economic resource for its littoral states, is increasingly affected by sea level decline and surge phenomena. Oil and gas extraction, fisheries and maritime transport are among the primary economic activities in the region. However, decreasing water levels and recurrent surges, particularly in the northeastern part of the sea, pose growing risks to these operations. This study investigates the spatial and temporal characteristics of 1836 surge events recorded in the Kazakh sector from 1940 to 2022, comprising 1086 up surges and 750 down surges. Up surges predominantly occurred in spring and autumn, while down surges peaked in September. To evaluate the potential impact of these surges, a hydrodynamic model (MIKE 21) was applied, utilizing ERA5 reanalysis data for surface wind and atmospheric pressure. Model validation against in situ measurements showed excellent performance (R2 = 0.98, RMSE = 0.11 m). Simulations of 14 extreme events revealed that up surges can cause inland flooding up to 33.5 km, while down surges can induce coastal retreats up to 32.2 km. These results demonstrate the need for robust early warning systems and integrated coastal risk management to mitigate the socio-economic impacts of surge events in the Caspian region.

The article presents the results of applying the HBV-light model for 6 mountain rivers flowing into the Buktyrma reservoir: Buktyrma, Ulken Boken, Naryn, Kurshim, Turgysyn, Kalzhyr. Research work carried out the simulation of the flow of mountain river basins with a catchment area varying within 758-12423 km2. The parameters of the models were calibrated using the GAP optimization algorithm for the periods 1978-2017. The calibration period according to the recommendations for river basins were 5 years, with the exception of the Turgysyn and Kalzhyr river basins, where hydrological stations were opened in 2012 and 2007, respectively. For modeling the runoff as input hydrological and meteorological data were used data from the observation network of the RSE “Kazhydromet”. It should be noted that, due to the sparse network of meteorological stations, for Turgysyn, Kurshim, Ulken Boken, Naryn river basins as input data were used meteorological data from stations not located in the catchment areas of rivers. As a result of model calibration, the optimal parameters for each river are obtained. Several widely used criteria were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the model: NSW, PBIAS, RSR and R2. The results of calculations of these criteria correspond to a "very good" and "good" assessment of the performance rating: the Nash-Sutcliffe criterion varying between 0.84 – 0.92, the RSR ranges 0.32-0.45, the PBIAS -14.3 % to +18.2 %. According to the simulation results, it was revealed that the model for all the rivers under consideration reproduces the dates well the beginning, duration of the spring flood period and the maximum water consumption for this period. Given the sparse network of meteorological stations and the overregulation of some river basins, the using of the HBV-light model showed good results of modeling runoff for mountain rivers of Kazakhstan for calibration period. Also, the model was validated for 2018-2020 period. Validation results on performance criteria indicators for the Buktyrma and Ulken Boken river basins showed a “very good” replication result, while for the remaining 4 river basins the results were unsatisfactory, which was a consequence of management activities on the flow of river basins.

The article deals with methods of improving the forecasting of the volume of spring flood runoff. The main objects of the study are the Oba, Ulbi and Dresvyanka rivers, which are lateral tributaries of the Shulba reservoir. These rivers belong to the type of rivers with spring-summer flooding and extended flow for more than 2...3 months. The aim of the study is to develop a methodology for flow forecasting based on the relationship between snow accumulation and river flow in spring and summer periods. The results of the study of hydrological and meteorological factors affecting runoff formation are presented, and equations for forecasting runoff during spring and summer floods and its duration are derived. The obtained multiple regression equations demonstrated high accuracy in modelling flood volumes, with correlation coefficients between observed and predicted data ranging from 0,79 to 0,91. According to S/σ calculations, the results obtained indicate good reproducibility of the observed flood volumes, with values ranging from 0,46 to 0,53.
