The article is devoted to priority solutions for launching systemic transformations of managerial education for the technological breakthrough. The basis for the development of such decisions was the scientific direction “Proactive Management in Actively Developing Industries and Economic Sectors”, in which the authors work, and the experience in creating educational products that meet the latest trends, including those that have appeared recently. The research methodology included analysis of scientific literature on the problems of complex systems development, proactive management and anticipatory training, systematization of educational practices for managers in foreign and domestic universities, conducting surveys of experts – heads of Russian large industrial enterprises, professors and students. The key reasons for the unsatisfactory state of management education are identified and a set of recommendations for its reform has been developed. Changes in organizational models of managerial education are proposed, the principles of implementing fundamental training and enhancing the humanization of education with a simultaneous increase in the level of knowledge of the scientific and technical foundations of production process are formulated. The conditions of increasing the effectiveness of students' practical training are considered, the forms of its implementation are determined to ensure the readiness of graduates to work in managerial positions. The results of long-term studies of anticipatory training, from managers at the lower levels to directors of large companies, are carried out. These results were obtained in the scientific and educational center “INZHEK” of the Ural Federal University and tested at various levels of management education (bachelor's, master's degrees). The results of the study are of practical interest to managers and professors of universities, business schools and corporate universities, as well as to top managers of business structures involved in improving personnel training.

The objectives of this study are to substantiate the principles of advance education and the requirements for the new generation of educational programs aimed at developing competences for the design, manufacture, operation and maintenance of complex industrial systems integrated into intellectual production, environments, and robotic systems. The study included formulating a hypothesis, refining the conceptual framework, creating the necessary empirical base, reviewing the cases of world leading universities, and presenting and substantiating the main features of advance management education that meet the current challenges. A flexible modular architecture of the educational process was developed which allows making timely adjustments to the content and teaching methods to include new knowledge. The experience of testing the results obtained in consulting practice, in teaching master’s degree students at Ural Federal University (Russia) and in educational projects for leaders and breakthrough teams of large energy corporations is described. The academic novelty of the results lies in the comprehensive examination of the issue of advance education, the conditions and the tools for its implementation within the framework of the proactive management methodology developed by the authors for sustainable business development in a revolutionary and changing industrial landscape.

In order to ensure their market sustainability, it is essential for energy-intensive industrial companies to address the issues of efficient energy use. Companies that are prepared to embrace tariff hikes, structural changes in fuel and energy markets, and a shortage of energy resources have a wider range of options to respond to the new challenges posed by the external environment and to reduce their risks. This task becomes particularly relevant in the context of the development of the circular economy that is aimed at resource optimization, energy conservation, zero-waste manufacturing, and business models that are based on maximum operational efficiency. This study aims to develop a methodology for rational behavior of the energy consumer in the context of the circular economy. The concept of “rational behavior” is defined by the authors as the intention to make the maximum use of the advantages and potential of energy markets in order to reduce the cost of energy supply, increase the level of electrification in industrial production, and use the capabilities of their own energy business. The article describes the main principles of rational behavior that serve as the foundation for effective implementation of various strategies (that of the seller, buyer, or both) in a company. A link is shown between rational behavior and energy market potential management in a company as a mix of technological, economic, and organizational activities performed by the energy consumer in a competitive market and effective market risk management. Forms of off-grid power supply and conditions for their application in manufacturing, for example, mini-combined heat and power (CHP) plants and quadgeneration plants at large metallurgical facilities were analyzed.

The paper considers the aftermath of a crisis for the electric power industry and resulting economic development issues. A comprehensive approach to mitigating the consequences is suggested that includes emergency as well as strategic measures. The authors prove that the suggested minimum set of emergency measures makes it possible to avoid the most dangerous scenario. Strategic measures are outlined that improve the sustainability of the energy sector and make future crises less severe. The authors show the expediency of embracing demand-side management (DSM) and the benefits of DSM for all parties involved. The advantages of developing distributed generation at the level of the region and the level of the grid are considered, and barriers hampering small-scale power generation and ways of overcoming them are proposed.

The development of energy markets encourages energy companies to optimise their productive asset management process. In times of crisis, effective asset management becomes a top-priority issue for energy companies due to limited investment resources for renewal and modernisation. This study reveals the principles of productive asset management systems in energy companies. The formation of asset management systems in international energy companies is analysed. It is illustrated that the asset management process must be integrated into the energy company’s overall strategy. A schematic diagram of productive asset management in energy companies in times of crisis is suggested.

Interdisciplinary teamwork is particularly important for large-scale power-engineering projects involving technological modernization. These teams are efficient when working on organizational tasks with a high degree of uncertainty, tasks requiring an unconventional approach. This chapter discusses an application of the original visualization method in the process of developing concept projects for the power industry. This chapter demonstrates that visualization methods can substantially broaden the horizon since they encourage a more integrated perspective: they highlight the relevant information for solving the problem and help prompt an effective solution. This method was tested at the strategic project session ‘visual brainstorming’; it involved a team of young managers from large energy companies and students pursuing master’s degree energy-related programs.

The paper looks at a comprehensive approach to cost management in the electric power sector aiming at ensuring the achievement of the sector’s strategic goals. The paper highlights a link between the implementation of strategic projects of development of the energy system aimed at building up-to-date infrastructure compliant with world standards and the appearance of a wider range of available cost management methods. The paper studies possibilities for improving cost management systems amid crisis when the lack of financial resources hampers the implementation of big projects. The paper singles out the most prospective applications of predictive analytics in cost management of energy companies.

As a result of reforms in the electric power industries of developing countries, many major financially strong consumers have moved away from last resort suppliers who had a monopoly on electricity supply. Many electricity retailers are yet to adopt a focus on the market due to various external and internal factors (a narrow range of tariffs, some customers fail to pay their bills on time, operational efficiency issues). It is obvious that the sustainable development of last resort suppliers might depend on how customer-focused they are, i.e. the quality of customer service, ancillary services programmes, differential tariffs and non-price benefits. The paper describes a system that was developed for assessing the customer-focused approach of an electricity retailer that determines the latter’s competitive edge. Ideas are proposed for improving the customer orientation of last resort suppliers.

The development of the regional electric power industry has come to the forefront due to the changing scale, quality, and configuration of electric power infrastructure, and the spread of distributed generation. This gives rise to more stringent requirements regarding the reliability, safety, and environmental impact of electric power supply. This article aims to justify a package of methods that make it possible to identify and minimize investment, production, financial, and environmental risks in order to ensure sustainable development of the regional electric power industry that performs anti-crisis functions, and of individual energy companies. The key method to be employed is integrated resource planning (IRP). As a part of the method, energy conservation, renewable energy sources, and combined heat and power production are considered as equally valid ways of meeting future demand. The authors have designed a methodology for taking into account uncertainty and risk when implementing IRP. The methodology includes analysis of scenarios and decision making processes by calculating past and projected values of profit indicators. When conducting the environmental and economic assessment of an investment project in the electric power industry, the authors suggest using an aggregate indicator of environmental and economic effectiveness that is calculated on the basis of a combination of locally significant positive and negative environmental and economic impacts of the project. The authors formulate conceptual provisions that serve as the foundation for a promising model of the regional electric power industry and which contain recommendations for managing the development of the industry while minimizing organizational, market, and technological risks.
