Phishing is the easiest way to use cybercrime with the aim of enticing people to give accurate information such as account IDs, bank details, and passwords. This type of cyberattack is usually triggered by emails, instant messages, or phone calls. The existing anti-phishing techniques are mainly based on source code features, which require to scrape the content of web pages, and on third-party services which retard the classification process of phishing URLs. Although the machine learning techniques have lately been used to detect phishing, they require essential manual feature engineering and are not an expert at detecting emerging phishing offenses. Due to the recent rapid development of deep learning techniques, many deep learning-based methods have also been introduced to enhance the classification performance. In this paper, a fast deep learning-based solution model, which uses character-level convolutional neural network (CNN) for phishing detection based on the URL of the website, is proposed. The proposed model does not require the retrieval of target website content or the use of any third-party services. It captures information and sequential patterns of URL strings without requiring a prior knowledge about phishing, and then uses the sequential pattern features for fast classification of the actual URL. For evaluations, comparisons are provided between different traditional machine learning models and deep learning models using various feature sets such as hand-crafted, character embedding, character level TF-IDF, and character level count vectors features. According to the experiments, the proposed model achieved an accuracy of 95.02% on our dataset and an accuracy of 98.58%, 95.46%, and 95.22% on benchmark datasets which outperform the existing phishing URL models.
Today's growing phishing websites pose significant threats due to their extremely undetectable risk. They anticipate internet users to mistake them as genuine ones in order to reveal user information and privacy, such as login ids, pass-words, credit card numbers, etc. without notice. This paper proposes a new approach to solve the anti-phishing problem. The new features of this approach can be represented by URL character sequence without phishing prior knowledge, various hyperlink information, and textual content of the webpage, which are combined and fed to train the XGBoost classifier. One of the major contributions of this paper is the selection of different new features, which are capable enough to detect 0-h attacks, and these features do not depend on any third-party services. In particular, we extract character level Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) features from noisy parts of HTML and plaintext of the given webpage. Moreover, our proposed hyperlink features determine the relationship between the content and the URL of a webpage. Due to the absence of publicly available large phishing data sets, we needed to create our own data set with 60,252 webpages to validate the proposed solution. This data contains 32,972 benign webpages and 27,280 phishing webpages. For evaluations, the performance of each category of the proposed feature set is evaluated, and various classification algorithms are employed. From the empirical results, it was observed that the proposed individual features are valuable for phishing detection. However, the integration of all the features improves the detection of phishing sites with significant accuracy. The proposed approach achieved an accuracy of 96.76% with only 1.39% false-positive rate on our dataset, and an accuracy of 98.48% with 2.09% false-positive rate on benchmark dataset, which outperforms the existing baseline approaches.
Breast cancer death rates are higher than any other cancer in American women. Machine learning-based predictive models promise earlier detection techniques for breast cancer diagnosis. However, making an evaluation for models that efficiently diagnose cancer is still challenging. In this work, we proposed data exploratory techniques (DET) and developed four different predictive models to improve breast cancer diagnostic accuracy. Prior to models, four-layered essential DET, e.g., feature distribution, correlation, elimination, and hyperparameter optimization, were deep-dived to identify the robust feature classification into malignant and benign classes. These proposed techniques and classifiers were implemented on the Wisconsin Diagnostic Breast Cancer (WDBC) and Breast Cancer Coimbra Dataset (BCCD) datasets. Standard performance metrics, including confusion matrices and K-fold cross-validation techniques, were applied to assess each classifier’s efficiency and training time. The models’ diagnostic capability improved with our DET, i.e., polynomial SVM gained 99.3%, LR with 98.06%, KNN acquired 97.35%, and EC achieved 97.61% accuracy with the WDBC dataset. We also compared our significant results with previous studies in terms of accuracy. The implementation procedure and findings can guide physicians to adopt an effective model for a practical understanding and prognosis of breast cancer tumors.
Cryptocurrencies can be considered as mathematical money. As the most famous cryptocurrency, the Bitcoin price forecasting model is one of the popular mathematical models in financial technology because of its large price fluctuations and complexity. This paper proposes a novel ensemble deep learning model to predict Bitcoin’s next 30 min prices by using price data, technical indicators and sentiment indexes, which integrates two kinds of neural networks, long short-term memory (LSTM) and gate recurrent unit (GRU), with stacking ensemble technique to improve the accuracy of decision. Because of the real-time updates of comments on social media, this paper uses social media texts instead of news websites as the source data of public opinion. It is processed by linguistic statistical method to form the sentiment indexes. Meanwhile, as a financial market forecasting model, the model selects the technical indicators as input as well. Real data from September 2017 to January 2021 is used to train and evaluate the model. The experimental results show that the near-real time prediction has a better performance, with a mean absolute error (MAE) 88.74% better than the daily prediction. The purpose of this work is to explain our solution and show that the ensemble method has better performance and can better help investors in making the right investment decision than other traditional models.
Clustering DNA sequences into functional groups is an important problem in bioinformatics. We propose a new alignment-free algorithm, mBKM, based on a new distance measure, DMk, for clustering gene sequences. This method transforms DNA sequences into the feature vectors which contain the occurrence, location and order relation of k-tuples in DNA sequence. Afterwards, a hierarchical procedure is applied to clustering DNA sequences based on the feature vectors.
Background: Inferring the topology of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) from microarray gene expression data has many potential applications, such as identifying candidate drug targets and providing valuable insights into the biological processes. It remains a challenge due to the fact that the data is noisy and high dimensional, and there exists a large number of potential interactions. Results: We introduce an ensemble gene regulatory network inference method PLSNET, which decomposes the GRN inference problem with p genes into p subproblems and solves each of the subproblems by using Partial least squares (PLS) based feature selection algorithm. Then, a statistical technique is used to refine the predictions in our method. The proposed method was evaluated on the DREAM4 and DREAM5 benchmark datasets and achieved higher accuracy than the winners of those competitions and other state-of-the-art GRN inference methods. Conclusions: Superior accuracy achieved on different benchmark datasets, including both in silico and in vivo networks, shows that PLSNET reaches state-of-the-art performance.
