Reviewing literature revealed that the studies on the bearing characteristics of pile foundations mainly focuses on clay, ordinary sand, loess, saline soil, and other areas. However, few studies on the bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in calcareous sand were conducted. Besides, existing traditional studies ignored the variation of soil compression modulus with depth, and the effect of void ratio on the transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in a calcareous sand area were not well understood. In response of these problems, this study conducted a theoretical investigation on the transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in a calcareous sand area. The transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation were derived based on the Pasternak foundation model and the Winkler foundation model, incorporating the heterogeneous distribution of compressive modulus with buried depth. The calculation results of the Pasternak foundation model are closer to the observed results than the Winkler foundation model. Therefore, the following research on the transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in the calcareous sand area adopts the Pasternak foundation model. Then, the effects of the pile length, pile diameter, pile elastic modulus, horizontal load, bending moment, and void ratio on the transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in a calcareous sand area were thoroughly analyzed. Furthermore, the difference between the transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in a calcareous sand area and a quartz sand area was discussed. Results show that the horizontal displacement of the pile top in a calcareous sand area is greater than the quartz sand area under the same conditions.

The base post-grouting technology is widely used in pile foundation engineering to improve its behavior. For super-long piles, due to the large compression of pile shaft, conventional static load tests cannot effectively test the effect of post-grouting at the pile base. This study introduced a novel method to test the effect of base post-grouting of three 88 m long piles. A total of three test piles were grouted at the bottom of the piles. The grouting amount of the No. 1 pile was 500 kg, the No. 2 pile was 250 kg, and the No. 3 pile was 0 kg. The transmitted wave method in the pile and dynamic penetration method were used in combination to quantitatively evaluate the effect of base post-grouting on the soil below the pile base. The influencing range of base post-grouting was firstly evaluated by the transmitted wave method in the pile, and the strength of the soil before and after grouting under the same pile base was measured by the dynamic penetration method. The test results showed that: the depth of the pile base reinforcement was 2 m for No. 1 pile, and 1 m for No. 2 pile, which was consistent with the grouting amount; the elastic modulus of the soil below the pile base after base post-grouting was about twice that of the soil before base post-grouting; the strength of the soil below pile base was largely improved after grouting; and the bearing capacity of the base soil layer increased from 35.5% to 41.7% when the grouting amount increased from 250 kg to 500 kg.

Deep excavation and shield tunneling processes often induce significant deformation in adjacent existing pile foundations, posing risks to the safety of superstructures. To address this issue, capsule grouting expansion technology has emerged as an efficient and economical technology to actively control pile deformation during such construction activities. This technology has been applied in some engineering projects aimed at safeguarding nearby buildings or facilities. However, theoretical research on capsule grouting expansion technology is limited and lags behind its practical engineering application. This paper proposed a simplified theoretical approach for estimating the effect of capsule grouting expansion technology on the deformation of neighboring pile foundations. Initially, virtual image technology was employed to obtain an analytical solution for the lateral displacement of soil resulting from the expansion of a cylindrical cavity with infinite height. The pile was considered as an Euler–Bernoulli beam on a Winkler foundation, allowing for the calculation of the loading response of the existing pile foundation. Utilizing the two-stage method, the theoretical analytical method of the lateral deformation of the pile shaft caused by capsule expansion was obtained. The reliability of the proposed theoretical method was verified by comparing the measured and calculated results. Further investigation into the controlling effect of the capsule grouting expansion technology on the deformation of the pile foundation was conducted through parametric analyses. These analyses encompass capsule radius, the distance between the capsule and pile foundation, the depth of the capsule, the length of the capsule, and the pile base constraints.
