Consuming traditional petroleum-derived diesel fuel has long been associated with issues such as the depletion of natural energy resources. To solve these challenges, an alternate source like as biodiesel is an appealing option. Seed oils have long been recognized as an abundant and diverse source of biodiesel. In this study, poppy seed oil from the poppy (Papaver somniferum) was investigated for biodiesel production. Poppy seed biodiesel was generated and refined using acid-pretreated esterification with sulphuric acid prior to transesterification, as well as single-step alkaline catalyzed transesterification with methanol and potassium hydroxide. Finally, the percentage yield was compared. Using Statistica, the Box-Behnken design was applied to optimize process variables like time, temperature, catalyst concentration, and methanol-oil ratio to produce maximum yield. The relationship of process variables was also shown with the help of the Response Surface Methodology. A maximum yield of 94.87 % was obtained at optimized conditions, i.e., 90min reaction time, 60 °C of temperature, 0.25 mg of catalyst concentration, and 3v/v% alcohol-oil ratio. The fuel properties of biodiesel produced, such as acid value, moisture content, saponification value, iodine value, specific gravity, percentage of free fatty acids, refractive index, viscosity, boiling point, and peroxide value, were measured and compared with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D6751 and European Standards (EN) 14214. Further results were studied and discussed using Fourier Transfer Infrared (FTIR) analysis, which showed maximum similarity of raw material to formed biodiesel. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was performed to identify and quantify various fatty acid methyl esters. The results obtained were in accordance with various international standards for biodiesel fuel. Thus, poppy seeds can be used to obtain biodiesel.

The widespread presence of antibiotic residues, particularly norfloxacin (NFX), in food products and the environment has raised concern, underscoring the need for sensitive and selective detection methods. In this study, a novel broccoli-derived nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) was synthesized via a green hydrothermal approach, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) as both a nitrogen dopant and a functionalizing agent. The synthesized N-CQDs exhibit an average diameter of approximately ~4.2 nm and emit bright blue fluorescence, with a maximum emission at 445 nm upon excitation at 360 nm. A “Turn-ON” response toward NFX was achieved with a detection limit of 0.30 nM, attributed to hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions that suppressed non-radiative decay. Moreover, the sensor demonstrates high selectivity for NFX, effectively distinguishing it from common interfering substances, including other antibiotics, organic acids, and biomolecules. The N-CQDs also exhibit excellent stability under diverse conditions, such as varying pH levels, high ionic strength, and prolonged irradiation. Finally, the practical applicability of the developed sensor was validated by detecting NFX in spiked broccoli extract and milk samples, with recovery rates ranging from 98.2% to 100.1% and relative standard deviations of less than 2.0%. This work presents a sustainable and efficient N-CQD-based fluorescent sensing platform, offering significant potential for rapid and reliable detection of NFX in food safety and environmental monitoring.

A combined thermal analysis, variable temperature diffraction analysis, and X-ray charge density analysis of 2 : 2 nicotinic acid : gallic acid (NAGA). 3H2O co-crystal is reported, which revealed the dynamics of co-crystal growth. The precursor gallic acid monohydrate transforms to gallic acid anhydrate upon heating the co-crystal and as a result, the co-crystal assembly crumbles. To further explore the mechanism of the co-crystal growth, electrostatic and topological analysis of various intermolecular interactions in the co-crystal assembly, an experimental charge density analysis was performed using high-resolution diffraction data collected at 100 K and refined on the basis of Hansen and Coppens multipolar formalism using Mopro software. The results from the experimental refinements were compared with the multipolar refinement using theoretical structure factors obtained from B3LYP-D3 DFT calculations with excellent agreement. The co-crystallization starts with the formation of an NA⋯NA zwitterion backbone to which the hydrated gallic acid coformer binds via the electrostatic interactions. The significance of thermal analysis and in situ diffraction analysis combined with multipolar refinement has been proven to be helpful in understanding co-crystal growth. During in situ thermal diffraction analysis, the hydrated polymorph was transformed into another anhydrate polymorph of GA.
