Planetary gear trains (PGTs) are widely used in machinery to transmit angular velocity ratios or torque ratios. The graph theory has been proved to be an effective tool to synthesize and analyze PGTs. This paper aims to propose a new graph model, which has some merits relative to the existing ones, to represent the structure of PGTs. First, the rotation graph and canonical rotation graph of PGTs are defined. Then, by considering the edge levels in the rotation graph, the displacement graph and canonical displacement graph are defined. Each displacement graph corresponds to a PGT having the specified functional characteristics. The synthesis of five-link one degree-of-freedom (1DOF) PGTs is used as an example to interpret and demonstrate the applicability of the present graph representation in the synthesis process. The present graph representation can completely avoid the generation of pseudo-isomorphic graphs and can be used in the computer-aided synthesis and analysis of PGTs.
In this article, the consensus of networked underactuated robotic systems subject to fixed and switched communication networks is discussed by developing some novel event-triggered control algorithms, which can synchronously guarantee the convergence of the active states, the boundedness of the velocities of passive actuators, and the exclusion of Zeno behaviors. In the cases of fixed networks, the sufficient criteria are established for the presented distributed event-triggered mechanisms with and without using neighbors' velocities, in order to achieve a better tradeoff between the communication load and system performance. Besides, in the situation of switched networks, the sufficient criterion is established by assuming that the union of the network has a spanning tree. A distributed sampled-data rule is constructed to decide when to update its own and neighbors' estimated positions, and thus further reduces the unnecessary control cost. Finally, by further extending the main results to three other sampled-data control algorithms, several examples with performance comparisons are provided to validate the efficiency and advantages of the theoretical results.
It is of great importance in the conceptual creative design of mechanical systems to synthesize as many feasible kinematic structures of mechanisms as possible. However, the methods for the structural synthesis of multiple joint kinematic chains are seldom addressed in literature even though they are widely used in various mechanical products. This paper proposes an automatic method to synthesize planar multiple joint kinematic chains. First, the bicolor topological graph and the bicolor contracted graph are introduced to represent the topological structures of multiple joint kinematic chains. Then, the characteristic number string of bicolor topological graphs is proposed and used to efficiently detect isomorphism in the synthesis progress. Finally, a systematic method for the synthesis of kinematic chains with one multiple joint is proposed, and the whole families of multiple joint kinematic chains with up to 16 links and all possible degrees of freedom are synthesized for the first time.
Some new concepts, such as the perimeter loop, the maximum perimeter degree-sequence, and the perimeter topological graph, are first presented in this paper, and the method for obtaining the perimeter loop is also involved. Then, based on the perimeter topological graph and some rules for relabeling its vertices canonically, a one-to-one descriptive method, the canonical adjacency matrix set of kinematic chains, is proposed. Another very important characteristic of the descriptive method is that in the canonical adjacency matrix set the element number is reduced dramatically, usually to only one. After that, an effective method to identify isomorphism of kinematic chains is given. Finally, some typical examples of isomorphism identification including two 28-vertex topological graphs are presented in this paper.
The structural synthesis of planetary gear trains (PGTs) is helpful for innovating transmission systems in machinery. A great deal of research has been devoted to the synthesis of one-degree-of-freedom (1-DOF) PGTs over the past half century. However, most synthesis methods are limited to PGTs with no more than eight links. Moreover, the synthesis results are not consistent with each other. Until now, the inconsistency of synthesis results is still unresolved and exact synthesis results remain elusive. This paper presents a systematic and fully automatic method based on parent graphs to synthesize 1-DOF PGTs. The complete database of rotation graphs (r-graphs) and displacement graphs (d-graphs) of 1-DOF PGTs with up to nine links is established for the first time. All possible reasons for the contradictory synthesis results in the literature are analyzed and the controversy in the existing synthesis results which has lasted for nearly half a century is completely resolved. The exact results of the 6-, 7-, and 8-link r-graphs are confirmed to be 27, 152, and 1070, respectively. The exact results of the 6-, 7-, and 8-link d-graphs are confirmed to be 81, 647, and 6360, respectively. Additionally, the new results of 8654 r-graphs and 71,837 d-graphs of 9-link PGTs are provided for the first time.
