Nitrate-nitrogen (NO3−–N) removal and garden waste disposal are critical concerns in urban environmental protection. In this study, biochars were produced by pyrolyzing various garden waste materials, including grass clippings (GC), Rosa chinensis Jacq. branches (RC), Prunus persica branches (PP), Armeniaca vulgaris Lam. branches (AV), Morus alba Linn. sp. branches (MA), Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco branches (PO), Pinus tabuliformis Carrière branches (PT), and Sophorajaponica Linn. branches (SL) at three different temperatures (300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C). These biochars, labeled as GC300, GC500, GC700, and so on., were then used to adsorb NO3−–N under various conditions, such as initial pH value, contact time, initial NO3−–N concentration, and biochar dosage. Kinetic data were analyzed by pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The equilibrium adsorption data were evaluated by Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin–Radushkevich models. The results revealed that the biochar yields varied between 14.43% (PT700) and 47.09% (AV300) and were significantly influenced by the type of garden waste and decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature, while the pH and ash content showed an opposite trend (p < 0.05). The efficiency of NO3−–N removal was significantly influenced by the type of feedstock, preparation process, and adsorption conditions. Higher pH values had a negative influence on NO3−–N adsorption, while longer contact time, higher initial concentration of NO3−–N, and increased biochar dosage positively affected NO3−–N adsorption. Most of the kinetic data were better fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (0.998 > R2 > 0.927). Positive b values obtained from the Temkin model indicated an exothermic process of NO3−–N adsorption. The Langmuir model provided better fits for more equilibrium adsorption data than the Freundlich model, with the maximum NO3−–N removal efficiency (62.11%) and adsorption capacity (1.339 mg·g−1) in PO700 under the conditions of pH = 2, biochar dosage = 50 mg·L−1, and a reaction time of 24 h. The outcomes of this study contribute valuable insights into garden waste disposal and NO3−–N removal from wastewater, providing a theoretical basis for sustainable environmental management practices.

The climate and ecological problems caused by excessive carbon dioxide emissions are attracting more and more attention, and the need for carbon reduction has reached a consensus. Carbon peak and carbon neutrality is a solemn commitment made by China to the world and a strategic arrangement to achieve economic and social transformation. This study focused on Shanxi Province, a base of power source and heavy chemical industry in China. Based on energy consumption data, carbon emission data set at the county level, land use data and socioeconomic data, we built a carbon ecological pressure index in order to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of the carbon footprint, carbon carrying capacity and carbon ecological security status of each county in Shanxi Province from 2000 to 2020. The results showed that: (1) the total carbon footprint of Shanxi Province increased, and the number of high carbon emission counties showed an increasing trend. The largest part of carbon footprint was coal. (2) The vegetation carbon-carrying capacity showed an increasing trend in general, and forest land was the main contributor to the carbon-carrying capacity. (3) The carbon deficit of Shanxi Province was greater than 0 and behaved as a carbon source. The carbon ecological security decreased from a relatively safe level to a general safe level. (4) The carbon ecological pressure index gradually increased. It was predicted that the carbon ecological security level of each county will remain basically unchanged by 2025 and some will still be at a carbon ecological insecurity level. In general, the carbon ecological pressure index of some counties was still large. It is necessary to strengthen the use of clean energy, optimize the industrial structure and increase the carbon sink of forest land in order to reduce carbon emissions and increase the carbon sink, so as to ensure carbon ecological security and realize the goal of a low-carbon economy.

To solve the problem of large-scale growth of wetland reeds, wood vinegar, a by-product of pyrolysed reed wood vinegar, can be used as a natural antimicrobial agent. In this study, we compare the changes in growth and bacterial morphology of Escherichia coli (E. coli) treated with reed wood vinegar at different pyrolysis temperatures (300 °C, 500 °C and 700 °C) and reveal the bacterial inhibition mechanism of reed wood vinegar by RNA-Seq. The results of bacteria inhibitory activity showed that 1/2MIC 500 °C wood vinegar had the most prominent bacteria inhibitory activity. qPCR results showed that reed wood vinegar was able to significantly inhibit the expression of E. coli biofilm and genes related to the cell membrane transporter proteins. Electron microscopy observed that the wood vinegar disrupted the cellular morphology of E. coli, resulting in the crumpling of E. coli cell membranes. RNA-Seq showed the multifaceted antimicrobial effects of wood vinegar and demonstrated that the inhibitory effect of wood vinegar on E. coli was mainly realized through the inhibition of the expression of malE, which is an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter complex of E. coli. In conclusion, our study provides an effective method and a theoretical basis for the mechanism of reed wood vinegar as a natural antimicrobial agent and its pathway of bacterial inhibition.

The United Nations proposed the Sustainable Development Goals with the aim to make human settlements in cities resilient and sustainable. The excessive discharge of urban waste including sludge and garden waste can pollute groundwater and lead to the emission of greenhouse gases (e.g., CH4). The proper recycling of urban waste is essential for responsible consumption and production, reducing environmental pollution and addressing climate change issues. This study aimed to prepare biochar with high adsorption amounts of iodine using urban sludge and peach wood from garden waste. The study was conducted to examine the variations in the mass ratio between urban sludge and peach wood (2/1, 1/1, and 1/2) as well as pyrolysis temperatures (300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C) on the carbon yield and adsorption capacities of biochar. Scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, powder X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis were used to characterize the biochar produced at different pyrolysis temperatures and mass ratios. The results indicate that the carbon yield of biochar was found to be the highest (>60%) at a pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C across different pyrolysis temperatures. The absorbed amounts of iodine in the aqueous solution ranged from 86 to 223 mg g−1 at a mass ratio of 1:1 between urban sludge and peach wood, which were comparably higher than those observed in other mass ratios. This study advances water treatment by offering a cost-effective method by using biochar derived from the processing of urban sludge and garden waste.

Biochar water treatment stands at a decisive crossroads, where the promise of large-scale application meets the reality of laboratory trial-and-error. This study contends that the fundamental bottleneck to progress lies in the field’s persistent reliance on empirical experimentation and black-box data models. We therefore propose a conceptual research paradigm that aims to deeply integrate physics-informed machine learning (PIML) with life cycle assessment (LCA). The novelty of this framework lies in three dimensions: (i) the bidirectional information flow between PIML and LCA, enabling simultaneous material design and sustainability assessment; (ii) the embedding of fundamental physical laws (adsorption isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamics) directly into learning architectures to ensure physical consistency; and (iii) the extension to a water–energy–soil–food closed-loop system for holistic resource management. While the individual components of this framework have been demonstrated in other domains, their integrated application to biochar water treatment remains in early development stages. This perspective outlines potential pathways and identifies critical research gaps that must be addressed to realize this vision. The focus is on charting future directions rather than reporting established achievements. Through critical evaluation, we assess current integrated models under small-sample constraints and explicitly pinpoint explainability and cross-scale generalization as two indispensable gaps that industrial deployment demands be bridged. Building on this foundation, we outline a blueprint for a closed-loop system coupling water, energy, soil, and food, and present a three-phase roadmap for future research. This study seeks to offer a constructive perspective with the hope of supporting biochar technology toward more sustainable implementation.
