Purpose: This paper aims to introduce the weighted squared Euclidean distance between points in signal space, to improve the performance of the Wi-Fi indoor positioning. Nowadays, the received signal strength-based Wi-Fi indoor positioning, a low-cost indoor positioning approach, has attracted a significant attention from both academia and industry. Design/methodology/approach: The local principal gradient direction is introduced and used to define the weighting function and an average algorithm based on k-means algorithm is used to estimate the local principal gradient direction of each access point. Then, correlation distance is used in the new method to find the k nearest calibration points. The weighted squared Euclidean distance between the nearest calibration point and target point is calculated and used to estimate the position of target point. Findings: Experiments are conducted and the results indicate that the proposed Wi-Fi indoor positioning approach considerably outperforms the weighted k nearest neighbor method. The new method also outperforms support vector regression and extreme learning machine algorithms in the absence of sufficient fingerprints. Research limitations/implications: Weighted k nearest neighbor approach, support vector regression algorithm and extreme learning machine algorithm are the three classic strategies for location determination using Wi-Fi fingerprinting. However, weighted k nearest neighbor suffers from dramatic performance degradation in the presence of multipath signal attenuation and environmental changes. More fingerprints are required for support vector regression algorithm to ensure the desirable performance; and labeling Wi-Fi fingerprints is labor-intensive. The performance of extreme learning machine algorithm may not be stable. Practical implications: The new weighted squared Euclidean distance-based Wi-Fi indoor positioning strategy can improve the performance of Wi-Fi indoor positioning system. Social implications: The received signal strength-based effective Wi-Fi indoor positioning system can substitute for global positioning system that does not work indoors. This effective and low-cost positioning approach would be promising for many indoor-based location services. Originality/value: A novel Wi-Fi indoor positioning strategy based on the weighted squared Euclidean distance is proposed in this paper to improve the performance of the Wi-Fi indoor positioning, and the local principal gradient direction is introduced and used to define the weighting function.

Accurate, continuous, and reliable positioning is critical to achieving autonomous driving. However, in complex urban canyon environments, the vulnerability of stand-alone sensors and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) caused by high buildings, trees, and elevated structures seriously affect positioning results. To address these challenges, a sky-view image segmentation algorithm based on a fully convolutional network (FCN) is proposed for NLOS detection in global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs). Building upon this, a novel NLOS detection and mitigation algorithm (named S−NDM) uses a tightly coupled GNSS, inertial measurement units (IMUs), and a visual feature system called Sky−GVIO with the aim of achieving continuous and accurate positioning in urban canyon environments. Furthermore, the system combines single-point positioning (SPP) with real-time kinematic (RTK) methodologies to bolster its operational versatility and resilience. In urban canyon environments, the positioning performance of the S−NDM algorithm proposed in this paper is evaluated under different tightly coupled SPP−related and RTK−related models. The results exhibit that the Sky−GVIO system achieves meter-level accuracy under the SPP mode and sub-decimeter precision with RTK positioning, surpassing the performance of GNSS/INS/Vision frameworks devoid of S−NDM. Additionally, the sky-view image dataset, inclusive of training and evaluation subsets, has been made publicly accessible for scholarly exploration.

Mobile platform visual image sequence inevitably has large areas with various types of weak textures, which affect the acquisition of accurate pose in the subsequent platform moving process. The visual–inertial odometry (VIO) with point features and line features as visual information shows a good performance in weak texture environments, which can solve these problems to a certain extent. However, the extraction and matching of line features are time consuming, and reasonable weights between the point and line features are hard to estimate, which makes it difficult to accurately track the pose of the platform in real time. In order to overcome the deficiency, an improved effective point–line visual–inertial odometry system is proposed in this paper, which makes use of geometric information of line features and combines with pixel correlation coefficient to match the line features. Furthermore, this system uses the Helmert variance component estimation method to adjust weights between point features and line features. Comprehensive experimental results on the two datasets of EuRoc MAV and PennCOSYVIO demonstrate that the point–line visual–inertial odometry system developed in this paper achieved significant improvements in both localization accuracy and efficiency compared with several state-of-the-art VIO systems.

When satellites enter into the noon maneuver or the shadow crossing regimes, the actual attitudes will depart from their nominal values. If improper attitude models are used, the induced-errors due to the wind-up effect and satellite antenna PCO (Phase Center Offset) will deteriorate the positioning accuracy. Because different generations of satellites adopt different attitude control models, the influences on the positioning performances deserve further study. Consequently, the impact of three eclipsing strategies on the single-system and multi-GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Precise Point Positioning (PPP) are analyzed. According to the results of the eclipsing monitor, 65 globally distributed MGEX (Multi-GNSS EXperiment) stations for 31-day period in July 2017 are selected to perform G/R/E/C/GR/GREC PPP in both static and kinematic modes. The results show that the influences of non-nominal attitudes are related to the magnitude of the PCO values, maximum yaw angle differences, the duration of maneuver, the value of the sun angle and the satellite geometric strength. For single-system, using modeled attitudes rather than the nominal ones will greatly improve the positioning accuracy of GLONASS-only and BDS-only PPP while slightly contributions to the GPS-only and GALILEO-only PPP. Deleting the eclipsing satellites may sometimes induce a longer convergence time and a worse solution due to the poor satellite geometry, especially for GLONASS kinematic PPP when stations are located in the low latitude and BDS kinematic PPP. When multi-GNSS data are available, especially four navigation systems, the accuracy improvements of using the modeled attitudes or deleting eclipsing satellites are non-significant.

Cycle slip detection and repair are crucial for precise GPS-derived orbit determination of the low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. We present a new approach to detect and repair cycle slips for dual-frequency LEO satellite GPS observations. According to Newton’s equation of motion, the second-order time difference of the LEO satellite’s position (STP) is only related to the sampling interval and the satellite’s acceleration, which can be precisely obtained from the known orbit dynamic models. Then, several kinds of second-order time-difference geometry-free (STG) phase combinations, taking full advantage of the correlation between the satellite orbit variations and the dynamic model, with different level of ionospheric residuals, are proposed and adopted together to detect and fix cycle slips. The STG approach is tested with some LEO satellite GPS datasets. Results show that it is an effective cycle slip detection and repair method for LEO satellite GPS observations. This method also has some important features. Firstly, the STG combination is almost independent of the pseudorange. Secondly, this method is effective for LEO satellites, even in real-time application. Thirdly, this method is suitable for ground-based GPS receivers if we know the acceleration of the receivers.
