The present study determined the effects of mobile phone (900 and 1800 MHz)-induced electromagnetic radiation (EMR) exposure on oxidative stress in the brain and liver as well as the element levels in growing rats from pregnancy to 6 weeks of age. Thirty-two rats and their offspring were equally divided into three different groups: the control, 900 MHz, and 1800 MHz groups. The 900 MHz and 1800 MHz groups were exposed to EMR for 60 min/d during pregnancy and neonatal development. At the 4th, 5th, and 6th weeks of the experiment, brain samples were obtained. Brain and liver glutathione peroxidase activities, as well as liver vitamin A and β-carotene concentrations decreased in the EMR groups, although brain iron, vitamin A, and β-carotene concentrations increased in the EMR groups. In the 6th week, selenium concentrations in the brain decreased in the EMR groups. There were no statistically significant differences in glutathione, vitamin E, chromium, copper, magnesium, manganese, and zinc concentrations between the three groups. EMR-induced oxidative stress in the brain and liver was reduced during the development of offspring. Mobile phone-induced EMR could be considered as a cause of oxidative brain and liver injury in growing rats.

Honey is a natural animal product. The elemental composition of honey varies greatly depending on the source of nectar, honeydew, pollen and environmental conditions. The aim of the present study was to determine the levels of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and aluminium (Al) in a total of 65 honey samples procured from different regions of Turkey. Element levels were measured by using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). Minimum and maximum levels of the elements, indicated as µg/g wet weight were as follows: Cr: 0.126-7.964, Cu: 0.223-198.361, Fe: 3.506-1278.778, Mg: 5.830-309.783, Mn: 0.096-29.496, Se: 0.418-19.879, Zn: 1.734-245.205, Cd: 0.000-0.297, Pb: 0.000-3.035, Al: 0.775-155.585.

This work presents large-scale measurements of in vivo rat breast tissue dielectric properties (DPs) from 0.5 GHz to 6 GHz and classifies the collected data using supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms. The main goals of this work are, first, to report in vivo animal tissue DPs for microwave medical device development and, second, to demonstrate that microwave devices can be utilized for diagnostics. To this end, we separated 18 Sprague-Dawley female rats into control and experimental groups. The experimental group was subjected to chemically induced breast cancer, and the DPs of normal tissues and tumor tissues from the control and experimental groups were measured using the open-ended coaxial probe (OECP) technique. DPs of rat breast tissues are presented with Cole-Cole parameters. The OECP method is preferred since it can collect broadband measurements without sample preparation. Due to these advantages, the method was previously envisioned as a diagnostic tool to aid in biopsy procedures. However, high measurement error prevented the specialized device’s development and, consequently, the clinical deployment of OECP. We demonstrate that high error rates can be mitigated with the application of ML algorithms. Among seven different ML algorithms, the Support Vector Machines (SVM) algorithm classifies rat malignant, benign, and normal tissues with a median accuracy of 94.4 %, Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) of 91.9 %, recall of 94.4 %, precision of 94.9 % and F1 score of 94.4 %.

Quercetin (QR) is part of a subclass of flavonoids called flavonols. We aimed to investigate the effect of QR on malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in the liver of diabetic rats. We compared four groups of male adult Wistar albino rats: a control group, an untreated diabetic group, diabetic groups treated with QR, and QR group. Diabetes was induced by a single injection of streptozotocin (STZ) (50 mg/kg). Animals were kept in standard condition. On the 31st day of the study, the liver tissue was removed for biochemical parameters and histopathological evaluations. In an untreated diabetic group, liver MDA and AOPP levels were significantly higher than all groups. QR treatment significantly decreased the increased MDA, AOPP levels, and increased the decreased GSH-Px enzyme activity in liver tissues. The QR-treated rats in the diabetic group showed an improved histological appearance. Lesser vesicular vacuolization and fibrotic areas were observed in the QR-treated diabetic group than in the diabetic group. The STZ-induced liver injury is associated with oxidative stress, and coadministration of QR may reduce this damage effectively in a rat model. Our results are also supported by morphological improvement in liver tissue. Therefore, we think QR may be effective in treating hyperglycemia and oxidative damage in diabetes.

This study evaluated heavy metal levels (Pb, Cd, Hg, As, Cu) and the presence of Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes in mussels and commonly consumed fishery products from the Marmara region of Türkiye. Health risks were evaluated using total hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) values, while microbial risks in fresh and ready-to-eat (RTE) products were estimated via the Risk Ranger tool. Among 625 samples, Hg (36.96%; CI95 = 33.27–48.81), Pb (9.76%; CI95 = 7.67–12.34), and Cd (19.36%; CI95 = 16.45–22.64) exceeded permissible limits, except in crabs, which remained compliant. Anchovy, sardines, bluefish, shrimps, and octopus met EU Cd limits. Shrimps exhibited higher Asin levels than crabs (p < 0.05), while squids had significantly higher Asin than octopus but lower Pb (p < 0.05). Microbiological analysis detected Salmonella spp. in 4.00% of samples (CI95 = 2.50–6.30) and L. monocytogenes in 4.24% (CI95 = 2.70–6.59). Surmullet, bluefish, red mullet, crabs, mussels, and octopus tested negative for both, while anchovy was negative for Salmonella spp. only. THQ and HI assessments emphasized the need for environmental monitoring to mitigate heavy metal contamination. The detection of pathogens highlights the importance of stringent surveillance measures to ensure the safety of fishery products and bivalves.
