The traditional production paradigm of large batch production does not offer flexibility toward satisfying the requirements of individual customers. A new generation of smart factories is expected to support new multivariety and small-batch customized production modes. For this, artificial intelligence (AI) is enabling higher value-added manufacturing by accelerating the integration of manufacturing and information communication technologies, including computing, communication, and control. The AI technologies will allow manufacturing systems to perceive the environment, adapt to the external needs, and extract the process knowledge, including business models, such as intelligent production, networked collaboration, and extended service models. This article focuses on the implementation of AI in customized manufacturing (CM). The architecture of an AI-driven customized smart factory is presented. Details of intelligent manufacturing devices, intelligent information interaction, and construction of a flexible manufacturing line are showcased. The state-of-the-art AI technologies of potential use in CM, that is, machine learning, multiagent systems, Internet of Things, big data, and cloud-edge computing, are surveyed. The AI-enabled technologies in a customized smart factory are validated with a case study of customized packaging. The experimental results have demonstrated that the AI-assisted CM offers the possibility of higher production flexibility and efficiency. Challenges and solutions related to AI in CM are also discussed.
In the traditional agricultural wireless sensor networks (WSNs), there is a large amount of redundant data and high latency on critical events (CEs) for data collection systems, which increases the time and energy consumption. In order to overcome these problems, an effective edge computing (EC) enabled data collection approach for CE in smart agriculture is proposed. First, the key features data types (KFDTs) are extracted from the historical dataset to keep the main information on CEs. Next, the KFDTs are selected as the collection data type of the software-defined wireless sensor network (SDWSN). Then, the event types are decided by searching the minimum average variance between the sensing data of active nodes and the average value of the key feature data obtained by EC. Furthermore, the sensing nodes are driven to sense the event-related data with a consideration of latency constraints by the SDWSN servers. A real-world testbed was set up in a smart greenhouse for experimental verification of the proposed approach. The results showed that the proposed approach could reduce the number of needed sensors, sensing time, collection data volume, communication time, and provide the low latency agricultural data collection system. Thus, the proposed approach can improve the efficiency of CE sensing in smart agriculture.
At present, precision agriculture and smart agriculture are the hot topics, which are based on the efficient data collection by using wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, agricultural WSNs are still facing many challenges such as multitasks, data quality, and latency. In this paper, we propose an efficient solution for multiple data collection tasks exploiting edge computing-enabled wireless sensor networks in smart agriculture. First, a novel data collection framework is presented by merging WSN and edge computing. Second, the data collection process is modeled, including a plurality of sensors and tasks. Next, according to each specific task and correlation between task and sensors, on the edge computing server, a double selecting strategy is established to determine the best node and sensor network that fulfills quality of data and data collection time constraints of tasks. Furthermore, a data collection algorithm is designed, based on set values for quality of data. Finally, a simulation environment is constructed where the proposed strategy is applied, and results are analyzed and compared to the traditional methods. According to the comparison results, the proposal outperforms the traditional methods in metrics.

Currently, the detection and localization of tea buds within the unstructured tea plantation environment are greatly challenged due to their small size, significant morphological and growth height variations, and dense spatial distribution. To solve this problem, this study applies an enhanced version of the YOLOv5 algorithm for tea bud detection in a wide field of view. Also, small-size tea bud localization based on 3D point cloud technology is used to facilitate the detection of tea buds and the identification of picking points for a renowned tea-picking robot. To enhance the YOLOv5 network, the Efficient Channel Attention Network (ECANet) module and Bi-directional Feature Pyramid Network (BiFPN) are incorporated. After acquiring the 3D point cloud for the region of interest in the detection results, the 3D point cloud of the tea bud is extracted using the DBSCAN clustering algorithm to determine the 3D coordinates of the tea bud picking points. Principal component analysis is then utilized to fit the minimum outer cuboid to the 3D point cloud of tea buds, thereby solving for the 3D coordinates of the picking points. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, an experiment is conducted using a collected tea image test set, resulting in a detection precision of 94.4% and a recall rate of 90.38%. Additionally, a field experiment is conducted in a tea experimental field to assess localization accuracy, with mean absolute errors of 3.159 mm, 6.918 mm, and 7.185 mm observed in the x, y, and z directions, respectively. The average time consumed for detection and localization is 0.129 s, which fulfills the requirements of well-known tea plucking robots in outdoor tea gardens for quick identification and exact placement of small-sized tea shoots with a wide field of view.
In the context of smart agriculture, high-value data sensing in the entire crop lifecycle is fundamental for realizing crop cultivation control. However, the existing data sensing methods are deficient regarding the sensing data value, poor data correlation, and high data collection cost. The main problem for data sensing over the entire crop lifecycle is how to sense high-value data according to crop growth stage at a low cost. To solve this problem, a data sensing framework was developed by combining edge computing with the Internet of Things, and a novel data sensing strategy for the entire crop lifecycle is proposed in this paper. The proposed strategy includes four phases. In the first phase, the crop growth stage is divided by Gath-Geva (GG) fuzzy clustering, and the key growth parameters corresponding to the growth stage are extracted. In the second phase, based on the current crop growth information, a prediction method of the current crop growth stage is constructed by using a Tkagi-Sugneo (T-S) fuzzy neural network. In the third phase, based on Deng’s grey relational analysis method, the environmental sensing parameters of the corresponding crop growth stage are optimized. In the fourth phase, an adaptive sensing method of sensing nodes with effective sensing area constraints is established. Finally, based on the actual crop growth history data, the whole crop life cycle dataset is established to test the performance and prediction accuracy of the proposed method for crop growth stage division. Based on the historical data, the simulation data sensing environment is established. Then, the proposed algorithm is tested and compared with the traditional algorithms. The comparison results show that the proposed strategy can divide and predict a crop growth cycle with high accuracy. The proposed strategy can significantly reduce the sensing and data collection times and energy consumption and significantly improve the value of sensing data.
