To address the inefficiency and instability of automatic transplanting machines, a dual-row seedling pick-up device and its corresponding control system were developed. Existing seedling end-effectors are primarily mechanically controlled, and the seedling needles can easily cause damage to the interior of the bowl. In order to reduce the damage inflicted by the end-effectors to the bowl, this paper conducted a mechanical analysis of the end-effector. At the same time, a buffer optimization analysis was conducted on the operation of the end-effector, and a flexible pneumatic end-effector for seedling picking was designed. The control system combined the detection of multiple sensors to monitor the process of seedling picking and throwing. By coordinating the lifting cylinder and clamping cylinder, the system effectively reduced seedling pot damage while improving seedling picking efficiency. By setting the operating parameters of the servo motor, the goal of low-speed and high-efficiency seedling picking was achieved. To evaluate the performance of the control system, the linear displacement sensors and acceleration testing systems were used to analyze the performance of the seedling throwing. The results showed that the seedling picking efficiency could reach 180 plants min−1, with no significant difference between the actual measured moving distance and the theoretical setting distance. The positioning error remained stable between 0.5 and 0.9 mm, which met the requirements for seedling picking accuracy. The buffer optimization design reduced the peak acceleration of the end-effector from −22.1 m/s2 to −13.4 m/s2, and the peak value was reduced by 39.4%, which proved the significant effectiveness of the buffer design. A performance test was conducted using 128-hole seed trays and 33-day-old cabbage seedlings for seedling picking and throwing. When the planting frequency reached 90 plants/row·min−1, the average success rate of picking and throwing seedlings was 97.3%. This indicates that the various components of the designed seedling pick-up device work in good coordination during operation, and the control system operates stably. Technical requirements for the automatic mechanical transplanting of tray seedlings were achieved, which can provide reference for research on automatic transplanting machines.

To address the issues of poor positioning accuracy, low supply efficiency and inadequate adaptability for different tray specifications of the existing seedling tray conveying device, a dual-axis positioning tray conveying device was developed, which can accommodate seedling trays ranging from 21 to 288 holes. A dual-sensor positioning algorithm and variable displacement positioning method were proposed to increase the efficiency, ensuring precise initial positioning and intermittent movements both along the seedling conveyance (X-axis) and platform movement (Y-axis). The system utilizes a precise positioning servo-control system with three-closed-loop controls and a PID algorithm enhanced through simulation to refine seedling positioning accuracy. Experiments with nine different tray specifications were conducted on a step-controlled platform to test suitability, validating the performance of the initial positioning and intermittent transport in both the X and Y directions. On the X-axis, the initial positioning deviation of the seedling tray was up to 1.34 mm and the maximum deviation in the intermission conveying was 0.85 mm. Comparatively, the deviation on the Y-axis was smaller, with the initial positioning deviation up to 0.99 mm and the intermission moving deviation up to 0.98 mm. These results demonstrate that the designed device meets the requirements for precise transport, providing essential technological foundations for seedling tray transport and retrieval steps in fully automated transplanting machines.

The planting mechanism of existing transplanters cannot meet the agronomic requirements of planting densely planted vegetables with multiple rows, small plant spacing, and small row spacing. In order to solve this current problem, an eight-row duckbill planting mechanism driven by a motor and a cylinder was designed. According to the agronomic guidance and mechanism design requirements for transplanting densely planted vegetable seedlings, this paper analyzes the working principle of the planting mechanism, establishes its kinematic theoretical model, and determines the structural parameters of the driving device and opening and closing device in the planting mechanism. Aimed at the problem of large planting resistance when eight-row planting end effectors of the planting mechanism are planting at the same time, based on the existing research, three duckbill planting end effectors with double incisions, four incisions, and conical structures were selected, and the planting process was simulated using an EDEM 2022-RecurDyn 2024 coupling simulation. The single-factor analysis method and the interactive factor Box–Behnken response surface analysis method were used. It is concluded that the duckbill end effector with double incisions has the smallest planting resistance, and the rationality of the mechanism design is preliminarily verified. A planting resistance measurement platform was built based on the STM32 platform and HX711 module, and a planting resistance test of the duckbill planting end effector was carried out to verify the correctness of the planting mechanism simulation results. The planting mechanism performance test was carried out, and the test results showed that the planting qualification rate of the prototype reached 96.62%, the planting spacing variation coefficient was only 3.55%, and the planting efficiency reached about 7135 plants/h, which met the agronomic requirements of small plant spacing and small row spacing for densely planted vegetables and verified the feasibility and practicality of the planting mechanism.

Aiming at the problem that the whole row of reciprocating seedling picking mechanism is prone to inertial impacts during operation due to its excessive mass, causing seedling damage and positioning errors, this study builds a motion control system with a PLC controller as the core and proposes a composite motion control strategy based on planned S-curve acceleration and deceleration and fuzzy PID to achieve rapid response, precise positioning, and smooth operation of the seedling picking mechanism. By establishing the objective function and constraint conditions and taking into account the dynamic change of the seedling picking displacement, the S-curve acceleration and deceleration control algorithm is planned in six and seven stages to meet the requirements of a smooth transition of the speed and continuous change of the acceleration curve of the seedling picking mechanism during movement. A fuzzy PID positioning control system is designed, the control system transfer function is constructed, and fuzzy rules are formulated to dynamically compensate for the error and its rate of change to meet the requirements of fast response and no overshoot oscillation of the positioning control system. The speed and acceleration of the seedling picking mechanism under the six-segment and seven-segment S-curve acceleration and deceleration motion control conditions were simulated using MATLAB2024a simulation software and compared with the trapezoidal acceleration and deceleration motion control. The planned S-curve acceleration and deceleration control algorithm has a more stable control effect on the seedling picking mechanism when it operates under the conditions of the dynamic change of the displacement, and it meets the design requirements of seedling picking efficiency. The positioning control system was modeled and simulated using the Simulink simulation platform. When KP = 15, KI = 3, and KD = 1, the whole-row seedling picking control system ran stably, responded quickly, and had no overshoot. Compared with the PID control system with fixed parameters, the fuzzy PID control system reduced the time consumption in the rising stage by 24.5% and shortened the overall stabilization process by 17.6%. The zero overshoot characteristic was ensured, and the response speed was faster. When a disturbance signal is added, the overshoot of the fuzzy PID control system is reduced by 2.4%, and the response speed is increased by 6.8% compared with the fixed-parameter PID control system. The dynamic response rate and anti-disturbance performance are better than those of the fixed-parameter PID control system. A bench comparison test was carried out. The results showed that the S-curve acceleration and deceleration motion control algorithm reduced the average mass loss rate of seedlings by 46.19% compared with the trapezoidal acceleration and deceleration motion control algorithm, and the seedling picking efficiency met the design requirements. Fuzzy PID positioning control was used, and the maximum displacement error of the end effector during seedling picking was −1.4 mm, and the average relative error rate was 0.22%, which met the positioning accuracy requirements of the end effector in the X-axis direction and verified the stability and accuracy of the designed control system. The designed control system was tested in the field, and the average comprehensive success rate of seedling picking and throwing reached 96.2%, which verified the feasibility and practicality of the control system.

This paper aims to address the problem of the low success rate of seedling picking and throwing, and the high damage rate of pot seedling, caused by the unclear interaction and parameter mismatch between the seedling picking end effector and the pot seedling during the seedling picking and throwing process of automatic transplanters. An EDEM–RecurDyn coupled simulation was conducted, through which the disturbance of substrate particles in the bowl body during the inserting, extracting, and transporting processes by the seedling picking end effector was visualized and analyzed. The force and motion responses of the particles during their interaction with the seedling picking end effector were explored, and the working parameters of the seedling picking end effector were optimized. A seedling picking end effector using two fingers and four needles is taken as the research object, a kinematic mathematical model of the seedling picking end effector is established, and the dimensional parameters of each component of the end effector are determined. Physical characteristic tests are conducted on Shanghai bok choy pot seedlings to obtain relevant parameters. A discrete element model of the pot seedling is established in EDEM 2022 software, and a virtual prototype model of the seedling picking end effector is established in Recurdyn 2024 software. Through EDEM-Recurdyn coupled simulation, the force and movement of the substrate particles in the bowl body during the inserting, extracting, and transporting processes of the seedling picking end effector under different operating parameters were explored, providing a theoretical basis for optimizing the working parameters of the end effector. The inserting and extracting velocity, transporting velocity, and inserting depth of the seedling picking end effector were used as experimental factors, and the success rate of seedling picking and throwing, and the loss rate of substrate, were used as evaluation indicators; single-factor tests and three-factor, three-level Box–Behnken bench tests were conducted. Variance analysis, response surface methodology, and multi-objective optimization were performed using Design-Expert 13 software to obtain the optimal parameter combination: when the inserting and extracting velocity was 228 mm/s, the transporting velocity was 264 mm/s, the inserting depth was 37 mm, the success rate of seedling picking and throwing was 97.48%, and the loss rate of substrate was 2.12%. A verification experiment was conducted on the bench, and the success rate of seedling picking and throwing was 97.35%, and the loss rate of substrate was 2.34%, which was largely consistent with the optimized results, thereby confirming the rationality of the established model and optimized parameters. Field trial showed the success rate of seedling picking and throwing was 97.04%, and the loss rate of substrate was 2.41%. The error between the success rate of seedling picking and throwing and the optimized result was 0.45%, indicating that the seedling picking end effector has strong anti-interference ability, and verifying the feasibility and practicality of the established model and optimized parameters.

To address the existing problems of frequent manual tray handling, poor continuity, and insufficient coordination in fully automatic transplanters, this study designed an integrated multi-layer tray-handling and dual-claw coordinated seedling pick-and-throw mechanism. Through continuous tray conveying and multi-layer tray-handling mechanisms, automatic replacement of multiple seedling trays was achieved. A dual-claw coordinated seedling picking and planting mechanism was designed, and the seedling picking trajectory was optimized based on path planning and RecurDyn kinematic simulation. Six-segment and seven-segment S-shaped acceleration and deceleration motion control curves and planning strategies that can be switched according to the target displacement and dynamic parameters were proposed, and a PLC-based software and hardware control system was constructed. The simulation and experimental results show that the dual-module parallel motion mode is more efficient and has a smoother trajectory than the serial mode. The average positioning absolute error of tray conveying is 1.09 mm, the average horizontal and vertical positioning absolute errors of seedling picking are 1.07 mm and 1.09 mm, respectively, and the horizontal and vertical positioning absolute errors of seedling planting are 1.50 mm and 1.51 mm, respectively. The success rate of seedling picking is 97.01%, the success rate of seedling planting is 96.39%, and the qualified rate of planting is 96%. The experimental results meet the actual operation requirements. This study provides a theoretical basis and technical support for the high-efficiency coordinated operation of fully automatic transplanters.
