Aim: To design an automated glaucoma detection system for early detection of glaucoma using fundus images. Background: Glaucoma is a serious eye problem that can cause vision loss and even permanent blindness. Early detection and prevention are crucial for effective treatment. Traditional diagnostic approaches are time consuming, manual, and often inaccurate, thus making automated glaucoma diagnosis necessary. Objective: To propose an automated glaucoma stage classification model using pre-trained deep convolutional neural network (CNN) models and classifier fusion. Methods: The proposed model utilized five pre-trained CNN models: ResNet50, AlexNet, VGG19, DenseNet-201, and Inception-ResNet-v2. The model was tested using four public datasets: ACRIMA, RIM-ONE, Harvard Dataverse (HVD), and Drishti. Classifier fusion was created to merge the decisions of all CNN models using the maximum voting-based approach. Results: The proposed model achieved an area under the curve of 1 and an accuracy of 99.57% for the ACRIMA dataset. The HVD dataset had an area under the curve of 0.97 and an accuracy of 85.43%. The accuracy rates for Drishti and RIM-ONE were 90.55 and 94.95%, respectively. The experimental results showed that the proposed model performed better than the state-of-the-art methods in classifying glaucoma in its early stages. Understanding the model output includes both attribution-based methods such as activations and gradient class activation map and perturbation-based methods such as locally interpretable model-agnostic explanations and occlusion sensitivity, which generate heatmaps of various sections of an image for model prediction. Conclusion: The proposed automated glaucoma stage classification model using pre-trained CNN models and classifier fusion is an effective method for the early detection of glaucoma. The results indicate high accuracy rates and superior performance compared to the existing methods.

Brain tumors significantly impact global health and pose serious challenges for accurate diagnosis due to their diverse nature and complex characteristics. Effective diagnosis and classification are essential for selecting the best treatment strategies and forecasting patient outcomes. Currently, histopathological examination of biopsy samples is the standard method for brain tumor identification and classification. However, this method is invasive, time-consuming, and prone to human error. To address these limitations, a fully automated approach is proposed for brain tumor classification. Recent advancements in deep learning, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have shown promise in improving the accuracy and efficiency of tumor detection from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. In response, a model was developed that integrates machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques. The process began by splitting the data into training, testing, and validation sets. Images were then resized and cropped to enhance model quality and efficiency. Relevant texture features were extracted using a modified Visual Geometry Group (VGG) architecture. These features were fed into various supervised ML models, including support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), logistic regression (LR), stochastic gradient descent (SGD), random forest (RF), and AdaBoost, with GridSearchCV used for hyperparameter tuning. The model’s performance was evaluated using key metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and specificity. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach offers a robust and automated solution for brain tumor classification, achieving the highest accuracy of 94.02% with VGG19 and 96.30% with VGG16. This model can significantly assist healthcare professionals in early tumor detection and in improving diagnostic accuracy.

Glaucoma, a primary cause of irreversible blindness, necessitates early detection to prevent significant vision loss. In the literature, fundus imaging is identified as a key tool in diagnosing glaucoma, which captures detailed retina images. However, the manual analysis of these images can be time-consuming and subjective. Thus, this paper presents an automated system for glaucoma detection using fundus images, combining diverse feature extraction methods with advanced classifiers, specifically Support Vector Machine (SVM) and AdaBoost. The pre-processing step incorporated image enhancement via Contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) to enhance image quality and feature extraction. This work investigated individual features such as the histogram of oriented gradients (HOG), local binary patterns (LBP), chip histogram features, and the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), as well as their various combinations, including HOG + LBP + chip histogram + GLCM, HOG + LBP + chip histogram, and others. These features were utilized with SVM and Adaboost classifiers to improve classification performance. For validation, the ACRIMA dataset, a public fundus image collection comprising 369 glaucoma-affected and 309 normal images, was used in this work, with 80% of the data allocated for training and 20% for testing. The results of the proposed study show that different feature sets yielded varying accuracies with the SVM and Adaboost classifiers. For instance, the combination of LBP + chip histogram achieved the highest accuracy of 99.29% with Adaboost, while the same combination yielded a 65.25% accuracy with SVM. The individual feature LBP alone achieved 97.87% with Adaboost and 98.58% with SVM. Furthermore, the combination of GLCM + LBP provided a 98.58% accuracy with Adaboost and 97.87% with SVM. The results demonstrate that CLAHE and combined feature sets significantly enhance detection accuracy, providing a reliable tool for early and precise glaucoma diagnosis, thus facilitating timely intervention and improved patient outcomes.

This article presents a meta-surface-based antenna configuration aimed at enhancing the gain performance for millimeter-wave wireless communication systems. The proposed structure consists of a rectangular meta-surface with circular cut-outs placed beneath a rectangular ring to improve the electromagnetic characteristics of the antenna. A rectangular monopole antenna is designed to operate at dual frequency bands around 38 GHz and 43 GHz. To further enhance radiation performance, Artificial Magnetic Conductor (AMC) structures are incorporated beneath the antenna element. The AMC surface improves the radiation efficiency and stabilizes the antenna characteristics by providing in-phase reflection near the operating frequencies. Simulation results demonstrate that the integration of the AMC structure significantly enhances the antenna gain and impedance matching performance. In particular, the incorporation of a 4×4 AMC array increases the antenna gain from approximately 3.4 dB to 6.4 dB while maintaining stable reflection coefficient characteristics. The proposed design demonstrates improved gain performance and compact structure, making it a promising candidate for millimeter-wave wireless communication applications.

Glaucoma is an increasing ocular disease and one of the major causes of irreversible blindness globally. Thus, it is of utmost importance to diagnose glaucoma accurately and in a timely manner for appropriate clinical intervention. Retinal fundus image analysis is a non-invasive approach for glaucoma screening. However, it is a tedious and subjective process for accurate glaucoma detection. In this work, a customized convolutional neural network (CNN) model is proposed for glaucoma classification using fundus images, and an attention mechanism is employed for improved discriminative feature learning. Experiments were carried out on two publicly available datasets, namely Drishti-GS1 and ACRIMA, for unbalanced and balanced datasets, respectively. Data augmentation and hyperparameter tuning were employed for improved model generalization. To increase model explainability and trust for accurate glaucoma screening, gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) is employed for accurate glaucoma screening. For accurate glaucoma screening, the proposed model attained 90.32% and 96.45% accuracy on the Drishti-GS1 and ACRIMA datasets, respectively, with higher sensitivity and AUC scores. Thus, it is evident that the proposed model employing attention mechanisms and explainable AI attained higher accuracy for accurate glaucoma screening.
